1Uma mulher sabedora compreende como deve construir a sua casa,
mas uma louca é capaz até de a destruir, à custa do seu desvario.
2O homem que anda na retidão teme o Senhor,
mas o que se desvia do seu caminho está a desprezá-lo.
3Nas palavras do louco germina o orgulho;
a fala do sábio é a sua proteção.
4Um estábulo sem animais permanece limpo,
mas o certo é que com um estábulo limpo não há ganhos.
5Uma testemunha digna de confiança não mentirá;
uma falsa testemunha respira mentira.
6O escarnecedor nunca chega a encontrar a sabedoria que diz procurar,
ainda que esta chegue facilmente às pessoas de bom senso.
7Se procuras conselhos,
afasta-te de gente insensata.
8A sabedoria duma pessoa sensata manifesta-se preparando o futuro;
o louco revela a sua insensatez enganando-se a si mesmo.
9Os loucos fazem pouco do pecado;
os que respeitam a Deus conhecem-se pela sua vontade em fazer o bem.
10Só a própria pessoa sabe medir a amargura ou a alegria que lhe vai na alma;
os outros nunca poderão realmente compartilhar da sua alegria.
11A casa dos ímpios virá a ser destruída,
mas a habitação das pessoas retas florescerá.
12Há caminhos que ao homem parecem ser uma via segura,
mas que acabam por levar à morte.
13O riso pode esconder um coração amargurado;
acabada a alegria, a tristeza torna a vir ao de cima.
14O traidor acabará por ter nojo da sua falsidade,
mas a vida dos retos é cheia de interesse.
15Só os ingénuos acreditam em tudo quanto se lhes diz;
um indivíduo sensato procura certificar-se das situações.
16Uma pessoa com entendimento é cautelosa e desvia-se do mal;
os insensatos atiram-se de cabeça, com toda a confiança, seja para onde for.
17Quem se irrita com facilidade vem sempre a fazer disparates;
o homem de más intenções será odiado.
18Os simples recebem como herança a insensatez,
mas os que têm discernimento têm em paga o conhecimento.
19Os maus submeter-se-ão diante dos homens de bem;
os perversos suplicarão à porta dos justos.
20O pobre até pelos seus companheiros é odiado,
mas os ricos têm muitos amigos.
21Desprezar o seu semelhante é um pecado;
abençoados serão os que se interessam pelos mais desfavorecidos.
22Os que praticam o mal perdem-se na vida,
mas para os que sabem fazer planos de bem haverá amor e fidelidade.
23O trabalho traz ganhos;
a muita conversa traz pobreza.
24Os sábios são louvados pelo seu entendimento;
os loucos são postos de parte por causa da sua insensatez.
25Uma testemunha de confiança, que diz a verdade, pode até salvar vidas;
uma falsa testemunha é traição.
26Temer ao Senhor dá ao homem amparo e segurança;
até os seus filhos nisso encontrarão proteção.
27O temor ao Senhor é uma fonte de vida;
as suas águas livram da cilada da morte.
28Uma população que se desenvolve é a glória dos governantes;
a sua redução é a ruína deles.
29Uma pessoa com entendimento sabe controlar o seu temperamento;
o de ânimo precipitado exalta a loucura.
30Um coração em paz prolonga a vida,
mas a inveja faz apodrecer os ossos.
31Quem oprime os pobres e os fracos insulta o Criador dos homens;
ajudar os pobres é honrar a Deus.
32Os pecadores serão expulsos, por causa dos seus pecados;
o justo, mesmo quando morre, encontrará um refúgio.
33A sabedoria está bem assente no coração das pessoas de bom senso;
para os loucos, ela tem de ser gritada bem forte, a fim de que possam ouvi-la.
34A justiça exalta as nações,
mas o pecado traz vergonha aos povos.
35O rei alegra-se com o servo sábio;
mas a sua cólera cairá sobre o que age vergonhosamente.
1The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
2Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly,
but those who despise him are devious in their ways.
3A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
but the lips of the wise protect them.
4Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty,
but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.
5An honest witness does not deceive,
but a false witness pours out lies.
6The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,
but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.
7Stay away from a fool,
for you will not find knowledge on their lips.
8The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.
9Fools mock at making amends for sin,
but goodwill is found among the upright.
10Each heart knows its own bitterness,
and no one else can share its joy.
11The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.
12There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.
13Even in laughter the heart may ache,
and rejoicing may end in grief.
14The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways,
and the good rewarded for theirs.

but the prudent give thought to their steps.
16The wise fear the Lord and shun evil,
but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.
17A quick-tempered person does foolish things,
and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.
18The simple inherit folly,
but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,
and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
20The poor are shunned even by their neighbors,
but the rich have many friends.
21It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor,
but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.
22Do not those who plot evil go astray?

23All hard work brings a profit,
but mere talk leads only to poverty.
24The wealth of the wise is their crown,
but the folly of fools yields folly.
25A truthful witness saves lives,
but a false witness is deceitful.
26Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress,
and for their children it will be a refuge.
27The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
turning a person from the snares of death.
28A large population is a king’s glory,
but without subjects a prince is ruined.
29Whoever is patient has great understanding,
but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.
30A heart at peace gives life to the body,
but envy rots the bones.
31Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
32When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,
but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.
33Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning

34Righteousness exalts a nation,
but sin condemns any people.
