1Diz o Senhor: “Suscitarei um destruidor contra a Babilónia, contra toda a terra dos caldeus, que será arruinada. 2Virão padejadores que a padejarão e a mandarão para bem longe; levantar-se-ão de toda a parte, nesse tempo de calamidade para ela. 3Os atiradores alvejarão certeiramente os frecheiros da Babilónia e perfurarão até as suas couraças. Nem os seus jovens serão poupados; todo o seu exército será liquidado. 4Cairão degolados na terra dos caldeus, fulminados no meio das suas ruas. 5Porque o Senhor dos exércitos não abandonou Israel e Judá. Continua a ser o seu Deus e a terra da Caldeia está cheia de pecado contra o Santo de Israel.”
6Fujam da Babilónia! Salvem-se! Não se deixem apanhar! Se se deixarem ficar, serão destruídos quando o Senhor tomar vingança dos pecados da Babilónia. 7Babilónia foi como uma taça de ouro nas mãos do Senhor, uma taça pela qual fez beber toda a Terra, tornando-a louca. 8Mas agora, repentinamente, a Babilónia também caiu. Chorem por ela! Deem-lhe consolação, deem-lhe remédios, talvez se cure! 9Ajudá-la-íamos se pudéssemos, mas agora já ninguém a pode salvar. Deixem-na! Abandonem-na e voltem para a vossa terra, porque os seus pecados se têm acumulado até ao céu!
10O Senhor vingou-nos! Venham, declaremos em Sião tudo o que o Senhor, nosso Deus, tem feito!
11Limpem as armas! Preparem a vossa defesa! Porque o Senhor despertou o espírito dos reis dos medos para marcharem sobre a Babilónia para a destruir. Este é o castigo daqueles que ultrajaram o seu povo e profanaram o seu templo. 12Prepara-te para a defesa, Babilónia! Põe muitas sentinelas a vigiar sobre as muralhas! Preparem emboscadas! O Senhor fará tudo o que prometeu contra a Babilónia. 13Para ti, que és um grande porto de comércio intenso entre as nações, chegou o teu fim; foi cortado o fio da tua vida. 14O Senhor dos exércitos deu a sua palavra, jurou pelo seu próprio nome: “As tuas cidades se encherão de inimigos, como campos cobertos por uma praga de gafanhotos, e subirão até aos céus os seus gritos de vitória.”
15Deus fez a Terra pelo seu poder e sabedoria;
estendeu os céus segundo o seu conhecimento.
16É a sua voz que ecoa no meio do trovão,
por entre as nuvens duma tempestade.
Faz o vapor de água erguer-se sobre a Terra;
manda os relâmpagos e traz a chuva;
faz soprar o vento dos seus recantos.
17O homem tornou-se estúpido, não tem sabedoria.
O ourives é ludibriado pelas imagens que fabrica;
fica envergonhado porque tem consciência disso;
não há nelas o mais pequeno sopro de vida.
18São coisas sem valor algum, inutilidades!
Serão desfeitas quando Deus vier para destruí-las.
19Mas o Deus de Jacob não é como estes ídolos!
Porque foi ele quem fez tudo o que existe.
Israel é a sua nação, a sua herança,
Senhor dos exércitos é o seu nome.
20“Babilónia, tu és o meu martelo, a minha arma de guerra. Vou usar-te para desfazer as nações em pedaços e para destruir muitos reinos. 21Contigo esmagarei muitos batalhões de soldados, destruindo tanto o cavalo como o seu cavaleiro, tanto o carro de combate como o seu condutor. 22Sim, velhos e novos, rapazes e raparigas, 23pastores e rebanhos, fazendeiros e bois, oficiais do exército e magistrados. 24Recompensarei a Babilónia, sob os vossos olhos, por todo o mal que fizeram ao meu povo, diz o Senhor.
25Eu sou contra ti, ó montanha poderosa, a Babilónia, a destruidora da Terra! Levantarei a minha mão e atirar-te-ei das alturas a que subiste, abandonar-te-ei como um monte incendiado. 26Tornar-te-ás desolada para sempre; nem as tuas pedras serão usadas por mais ninguém para a construção de edifícios. Serás completamente riscada do mapa!
27Mandem avisos de mobilização a muitas nações para virem fazer guerra à Babilónia. Toquem o sinal de convocação para a batalha; formem os exércitos de Ararat, Mini e Asquenaz. Nomeiem um general e tragam manadas de cavalos como pragas de gafanhotos! 28Tragam contra ela os exércitos dos reis dos medos e todos os seus generais, e ainda os exércitos de todos os países que governam.
29A Babilónia treme e torce-se com dores, porque tudo o que o Senhor planeou contra ela se está a cumprir rigorosamente. A Babilónia será deixada desolada, sem vivalma. 30Os seus poderosos guerreiros já não combatem; deixam-se ficar nas suas tendas no acampamento; foi-se toda a coragem; tornaram-se como mulheres. Os invasores queimaram as casas e até os portões das entradas da cidade deitaram abaixo. 31Mensageiros de toda a parte têm vindo a correr para dizer ao rei que tudo se perdeu! 32Todas as estradas de fuga estão bloqueadas; as fortificações foram incendiadas e o exército em peso entrou em pânico.”
33Porque o Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: “A Babilónia é como o trigo numa eira; dentro de muito pouco tempo começará a ser malhada!”
34Nabucodonozor, o rei da Babilónia, explorou-nos; reduziu-nos a nada; tirou-nos toda a força e energia; engoliu-nos como se fosse um monstro; encheu o ventre com os nossos bens; expulsou-nos da nossa própria terra! 35O povo de Sião exclama ainda: “Que a Babilónia seja castigada pela sua violência contra nós e nossos filhos!” Clama Jerusalém: “Que o nosso sangue caia sobre os moradores da Caldeia!”
36O Senhor respondeu-lhes: “Serei o vosso advogado; defenderei a vossa causa, vingar-vos-ei. Farei secar o seu rio e esgotarem-se as suas fontes. 37A Babilónia tornar-se-á num montão de ruínas, habitada somente por chacais, uma horrível terra de se ver, incrível mesmo, sem que lá viva uma só pessoa. 38Os homens da Babilónia rugem como leões, os seus urros são como os dos filhotes de leão. 39Pois agora, enquanto eles ainda jazem, cozendo as suas bebedeiras, prepararei uma espécie diferente de festa para eles; farei com que se embriaguem e fiquem eufóricos, acabando por adormecer, para nunca mais acordarem, diz o Senhor. 40Vou trazê-los como cordeiros para o matadouro, como carneiros e bodes.
41Como pôde a cidade da Babilónia51.41 No texto hebraico, Chechac. ser tomada, a grande Babilónia admirada por toda a Terra! O mundo nem quer acreditar no que vê; custa-lhe crer que a Babilónia tenha caído! 42O mar levantou-se até à Babilónia e esta foi coberta pelas vagas. 43As suas cidades jazem em ruínas, são um deserto seco e árido onde ninguém vive ou passa. 44Darei a paga a Bel, o deus da Babilónia, e tirarei da sua boca o que tragou. Não mais virão povos para adorá-lo, pois as paredes da cidade terão sido derrubadas.
45Ó meu povo, foge da Babilónia, salvem a vida da cólera tremenda do Senhor! 46Não entres em pânico, quando ouvires os primeiros rumores das forças que se aproximam. Esses ruídos tornar-se-ão mais distintos de ano para ano, porque se vão chegando cada vez mais. Depois haverá uma guerra civil em que os governadores do reino se levantarão uns contra os outros. 47O tempo terá chegado, quando castigar em pleno esta grande cidade e todos os seus ídolos; os seus mortos jazerão estendidos pelas ruas. 48Os céus e a Terra se alegrarão, porque virão do norte exércitos destruidores contra a Babilónia, diz o Senhor.
49Eis que a Babilónia cairá por causa dos assassinatos que cometeu contra Israel e devido aos massacres que empreendeu contra muitos povos em toda Terra. 50Vão-se embora, vocês que escaparam à espada! Não fiquem aí a olhar! Fujam enquanto podem fazê-lo! Pensem no Senhor e lembrem-se de Jerusalém, lá longe!”
51Estamos envergonhados por causa do templo do Senhor ter sido profanado pelos estrangeiros vindos da Babilónia.
52“Sim, diz o Senhor, chegou o tempo da destruição dos ídolos da Babilónia! Por toda a Terra se ouvirão os gemidos dos feridos! 53Ainda que a Babilónia pretenda atingir o céu, ainda que a sua força aumente desmesuradamente, ela morrerá”, diz o Senhor.
54Escutem! Prestem atenção ao grande clamor resultante da destruição da Babilónia, a terra governada pelos caldeus! 55Porque o Senhor está a destruir a Babilónia, cuja voz altiva se vai calando, à medida que as ondas de violência se quebram. 56Exércitos exterminadores virão para assassinar os seus homens mais fortes; as próprias armas se quebrarão nas suas mãos, pois o Senhor Deus dá-lhes o castigo; a Babilónia está a receber aquilo que muito bem merece.
57“Os seus nobres ficarão como que embriagados, assim como os sábios, os legisladores, os generais e os seus militares mais valentes. Adormecerão, para não mais acordar! Assim diz o Rei, cujo nome é Senhor dos exércitos. 58Porque as largas e fortes muralhas da Babilónia serão abatidas até ao chão e as suas enormes portas queimadas; foi em vão que ali trabalharam construtores vindos de muitas terras; o seu trabalho será destruído pelo fogo!”
59Foi durante o quarto ano do reinado de Zedequias que esta mensagem veio a Jeremias, para que a desse a Seraías, filho de Nerias, neto de Maaseias, respeitante à captura de Seraías e ao seu exílio para a Babilónia com Zedequias, rei de Judá. (Seraías era comandante de batalhão no exército de Zedequias.) 60Jeremias escreveu todas estas terríveis coisas que Deus planeou contra a Babilónia, todas estas palavras que aqui estão acima, 61e deu o rolo a Seraías dizendo-lhe: “Quando fores para a Babilónia, lê tudo isto que escrevi. 62E dirás: ‘Senhor, tu disseste que irás destruir a Babilónia, de tal forma que não ficará uma criatura humana viva aqui e será abandonada para sempre!’ 63Depois, quando tiveres acabado de ler todo o rolo, ata-o a uma pedra e lança-o no rio Eufrates. 64E dirás: ‘Assim será afundada a Babilónia, de tal forma que nunca mais emergerá com vida, por causa de todo o mal que Deus trará sobre ela!’ ”
Aqui terminam as mensagens de Jeremias.

destroy ye utterly all her host. 4Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets. 5For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. 6Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. 7Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. 8Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed. 9We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. 10The LORD hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God. 11Make bright the arrows; 59¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign.
