1“Nesse tempo, diz o Senhor, serei o Deus de todas as famílias de Israel e elas serão o meu povo. 2Cuidarei deles, diz o Senhor, dos que escaparam da morte, a quem demonstrei as minhas misericórdias no deserto, quando Israel buscava descanso.”
3De longe, o Senhor apareceu-nos, dizendo: “Amei-te, ó meu povo, com um amor eterno! Foi com terna benignidade que te atraí a mim! 4Por isso, hei de reconstruir a tua nação, ó virgem de Israel. Tornarás assim a ser feliz, a dançar alegremente com as pandeiretas. 5Plantarás novamente as tuas vinhas sobre as colinas de Samaria e ali comerás os frutos dos teus próprios pomares. 6Porque haverá um dia em que os vigias sobre os outeiros de Efraim gritarão: ‘Levantem-se, vamos a Sião, ao Senhor, nosso Deus!’ ”
7Porque o Senhor diz: “Cantem de gozo por tudo aquilo que farei a Jacob, a maior das nações! Cantem de prazer e de alegria: ‘O Senhor salva o seu povo, os que restaram de Israel!’ 8Porque hei de trazê-los do norte e dos cantos mais remotos da Terra, sem esquecer os cegos, os aleijados e as mães à espera de bebés, ou com eles nos braços. Uma grande multidão que se apresentará. 9Lágrimas de felicidade correrão pelos seus rostos e eu os conduzirei de regresso com muito cuidado. Andarão junto aos ribeiros de águas e não tropeçarão, porque eu sou um Pai para Israel e Efraim é o meu filho mais velho.
10Ouçam esta mensagem, todas as nações da Terra, e levem-na bem longe: ‘O Senhor, que foi quem dispersou o seu povo, é ele mesmo agora que o torna a reunir de volta, velando por ele como um pastor pelo seu rebanho.’ 11Salvará a Jacob daqueles que o querem esmagar! 12O povo regressará à sua terra natal e cantará cânticos de alegria sobre as colinas de Sião; andará radiante por causa da bondade do Senhor, das boas colheitas, trigo, vinho novo e azeite, dos belos rebanhos, do belo gado, por tudo o que lhe deu! A sua vida será como um jardim plantado junto a correntes de água e todas as suas tristezas desaparecerão. 13As moças dançarão de alegria e os homens, velhos e moços, participarão dessas manifestações de satisfação. Mudarei tudo o que for lamentação em expressões de contentamento, confortá-los-ei e farei com que se sintam bem, visto que todo o seu cativeiro, com tudo o que representou de acabrunhamento, ficou para trás. 14Os sacerdotes andarão contentíssimos com a abundância de ofertas trazidas ao templo. O meu povo se fartará de boas coisas”, diz o Senhor.
15O Senhor falou-me novamente: “Ouve-se em Ramá um clamor, amargas lamentações e um pranto imenso; é Raquel chorando pelos seus filhos; e está absolutamente inconsolável, porque foram-se, definitivamente.”
16Mas o Senhor diz: “Não chores mais, pois ouvi as tuas orações e poderás vê-los novamente! Eles regressarão da terra do inimigo, diz o Senhor. 17Há esperança para o teu futuro, diz o Senhor. Os teus filhos regressarão à sua terra natal, à sua própria terra.
18Ouvi os gemidos de Efraim: ‘Fui pesadamente punido, mas mereci-o bem. Fui como um bezerro que teve de se habituar ao jugo. Agora faz-me voltar de novo para ti e restaura-me, pois só tu és o Senhor, meu Deus. 19Afastei-me de Deus, mas a minha tristeza foi grande. Depois bati com a mão na cabeça, espantado com a minha própria estupidez. Fiquei profundamente envergonhado com tudo aquilo que fiz antes.’ ”
20E o Senhor responde: “Efraim é ainda meu filho, meu filho querido. É verdade que tive de o castigar, mas ainda o amo. Lembro-me muito dele e terei misericórdia dele, quero-o na minha presença.”
21“Quando forem para o exílio, vão pondo marcas no caminho; marcas bem visíveis, para poderem reconhecer a via quando regressarem; porque tu hás de regressar, ó virgem de Israel, às tuas cidades. 22Até quando andarás vagueando, ó filha rebelde? Porque o Senhor fará acontecer algo diferente, como uma mulher que corteja um homem!”
23O Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: “Quando os trouxer de volta, dirão em Judá e nas suas cidades: ‘O Senhor te abençoe, ó centro de justiça, ó santo monte!’ 24Tanto os habitantes da cidade como os que vivem no campo e os pastores viverão juntos em paz e felizes. 25Porque eu darei descanso a todos os cansados e alegria aos contristados.”
26Jeremias como que despertou e disse: “Que belo sonho que eu tive!”
27Diz o Senhor: “Virá o tempo em que aumentarei grandemente a população e multiplicarei o número de gado aqui em Israel. 28No passado, destruí meticulosamente toda a nação; mas agora com igual cuidado a reconstruirei. 29O povo não espalhará mais esse provérbio que diz: ‘Os pais comeram uvas azedas, mas foi nos dentes dos filhos que ficou o mau sabor.’ 30Porque cada um morrerá pelos pecados que comete; a pessoa que comer as uvas verdes, essa é que ficará com os dentes embotados.
31Virá o tempo, diz o Senhor, em que farei uma nova aliança com o povo de Israel e de Judá. 32Essa aliança não será como a que eu estabeleci com os seus pais, quando os tomei pela mão, a fim de os fazer sair da terra do Egito. Eles não cumpriram a sua obrigação nessa aliança, embora eu fosse como um marido para eles, diz o Senhor. 33Será assim a nova aliança que farei com o povo de Israel, depois daqueles dias: Porei a minha Lei nos seus entendimentos e vou escrevê-la nos seus corações. Nessa altura, eu serei o seu Deus e eles serão o meu povo. 34Então não será mais necessário insistir com alguém para conhecer a Deus. Porque todos, tanto os grandes como os pequenos, me conhecerão realmente, diz o Senhor; perdoarei e esquecer-me-ei dos seus pecados.”
35O Senhor, que nos dá a luz do Sol durante o dia e da Lua e das estrelas para alumiar a noite, que provoca ele próprio a agitação do mar, de maneira a formarem-se as vagas alterosas, cujo nome é Senhor dos exércitos, diz assim: 36“Se estas leis da natureza puderem alterar-se, então eu também poderei rejeitar o meu povo de Israel! 37Enquanto não se puderem medir nem a altura do firmamento, nem a profundidade da Terra, eu não o rejeitarei para sempre pelos seus pecados!
38Porque virá o tempo, diz o Senhor, em que toda a Jerusalém será reconstruída para o Senhor, desde a torre de Hananel na extremidade nordeste, até à porta do Canto a noroeste; 39desde o outeiro de Garebe no sudoeste, até Goa no sudeste. 40E toda a cidade, incluindo o campo dos mortos e o terreno das cinzas, no vale, será santa para o Senhor, como também todos os campos até ao ribeiro de Cedron e até à porta dos Cavalos a oriente da cidade. Ela nunca mais será capturada nem destruída!”

10¶ Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock. 11For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he. 12Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. 13Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. 14And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.
15¶ Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. 16Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. 17And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.
18¶ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. 19Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. 20Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.31.20 are…: Heb. sound 21Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
22¶ How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man. 23Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness. 24And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks. 25For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. 26Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.
27¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast. 28And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD. 29In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge. 30But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
31¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:31.32 although…: or, should I have continued an husband unto them? 33But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
35¶ Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: 36If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.
38¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner. 39And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. 40And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
