Ai dos despreocupados
1Ai dos que vivem tranquilos em Sião e seguros na região montanhosa da Samaria, que gozam de tanta popularidade entre o povo de Israel. 2Vão até Calné e vejam o que lá aconteceu; depois vão até à grande cidade de Hamate e desçam, por fim, a Gate dos filisteus. Porventura são melhores que estas nações? Ou a terra deles é maior do que a vossa? 3Vocês afastam todo o pensamento de castigo que possa esperar-vos, mas é pelas vossas ações que fazem aproximar-se o dia do julgamento.
4Vocês repousam em camas de marfim, estendem-se em belos sofás, comendo tenra carne de cordeiro e dos melhores bezerros. 5Cantam canções vãs ao som da harpa, imaginam que são grandes músicos, como era o rei David. 6Bebem vinho em várias taças e perfumam-se com inebriantes essências, sem se preocuparem minimamente com o facto de que Israel será arruinado. 7Essa é a razão por que hão de ser os primeiros levados para o cativeiro; dum momento para o outro cessarão os banquetes dos que vivem folgadamente.
O Senhor detesta o orgulho de Israel
8O Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, jurou pela honra do seu próprio nome: “Abomino a soberba e a jactância de Jacob, desprezo as suas fortalezas! Entregarei esta cidade, e o que ela contém, aos seus inimigos!”
9Ainda que tenham restado dez homens e uma só casa, também esses perecerão. 10O parente de um homem será o único que há de ficar, para o enterrar e, quando for a levar o corpo para fora de casa, perguntará ao outro que ficou sozinho lá dentro com vida: “Há mais algum corpo aí dentro?” A resposta será: “Não!” E acrescentará: “Cuidado, não chamem a atenção do Senhor, mencionando o seu nome!” 11Porque o Senhor deu a seguinte ordem: “Serão destruídas todas as casas, tanto as grandes como as pequenas!”
12Os cavalos podem correr sobre as rochas? Os bois podem lavrar o mar? São situações absurdas. Mas é semelhante ao que vocês fizeram, que transformaram a justiça em atos desprezíveis; de tudo o que era bom e reto fizeram uma bebida amarga. 13Igualmente estúpida é a vossa satisfação, ao dizerem: “Não foi pelas nossas forças que nós conquistámos Carnaim?”
14“Ó Israel, hei de trazer contra ti uma nação que te oprimirá amargamente, de norte a sul do país, desde Hamate até ao ribeiro de Arabá”, diz o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos.
Woe to the Complacent
1Woe to you who are complacent in Zion,
and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria,
you notable men of the foremost nation,
to whom the people of Israel come!
2Go to Kalneh and look at it;
go from there to great Hamath,
and then go down to Gath in Philistia.
Are they better off than your two kingdoms?
Is their land larger than yours?
3You put off the day of disaster
and bring near a reign of terror.
4You lie on beds adorned with ivory
and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.
5You strum away on your harps like David
and improvise on musical instruments.
6You drink wine by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
7Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
your feasting and lounging will end.
The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel
8The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself—the Lord God Almighty declares:
“I abhor the pride of Jacob
and detest his fortresses;
I will deliver up the city
and everything in it.”
9If ten people are left in one house, they too will die. 10And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them6:10 Or to make a funeral fire in honor of the dead asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash the great house into pieces
and the small house into bits.
12Do horses run on the rocky crags?
Does one plow the sea6:12 With a different word division of the Hebrew; Masoretic Text plow there with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison
and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—
13you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar6:13 Lo Debar means nothing.
and say, “Did we not take Karnaim6:13 Karnaim means horns; horn here symbolizes strength. by our own strength?”
14For the Lord God Almighty declares,
“I will stir up a nation against you, Israel,
that will oppress you all the way
from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”
