As mulheres de Salomão
1O rei Salomão casou com muitas mulheres estrangeiras, além da princesa egípcia. Muitas delas vieram de nações onde se adoravam ídolos: Moabe, Amon, Edom, Sídon e dos hititas. 2O Senhor tinha dado instruções expressas ao seu povo para que não casasse com pessoas dessas nações, porque as mulheres com quem casassem haveriam de levá-los adorar os seus deuses. Apesar disso, Salomão deixou-se levar pelo amor a essas mulheres. 3Teve setecentas mulheres de sangue real e trezentas concubinas. Elas foram, sem dúvida, responsáveis por ter desviado o seu coração do Senhor. 4Especialmente já no tempo da sua velhice, levando-o a adorar os seus deuses em vez de confiar inteiramente no Senhor, seu Deus, como fizera o seu pai David. 5Salomão prestou culto a Astarote, deusa dos sidónios, e a Milcom, o abominável deus dos amonitas.
6Dessa forma, Salomão fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, recusando-se a seguir o Senhor, ao contrário do seu pai David. 7Chegou mesmo a construir um santuário pagão no monte das Oliveiras, do outro lado do vale em frente a Jerusalém, dedicado a Quemós, o abominável deus de Moabe, e um outro a Moloque, o igualmente abominável deus dos amonitas. 8Salomão construiu templos para que as suas mulheres estrangeiras oferecessem incenso e sacrifícios aos seus deuses.
9O Senhor irou-se muito contra Salomão, pois o rei deixou de se interessar pelo Senhor, Deus de Israel. Tinha-lhe aparecido duas vezes 10para o avisar especificamente contra o perigo de prestar culto a outros deuses e ele fechou os seus ouvidos. 11Por isso, o Senhor lhe disse: “Visto que não guardaste a minha aliança e não obedeceste às minhas leis, tirarei de ti o reino e da tua família e dá-lo-ei ao teu servo. 12Contudo, por amor do teu pai David não o farei enquanto viveres. O reino será tirado ao teu filho. 13Mesmo assim permitirei que seja rei de uma tribo, por amor de David e de Jerusalém, a minha cidade escolhida.”
Os adversários de Salomão
14Foi assim que o Senhor permitiu a ascensão de Hadade, o edomita. Salomão tornou-se apreensivo, porque Hadade era membro da família real de Edom. 15Anos antes, quando David tinha estado em Edom com Joabe, para tratarem do enterro de alguns soldados israelitas mortos em combate, o exército israelita matou quase todos os homens do país. 16Levou seis meses, mas finalmente conseguiu matá-los a todos. 17A única exceção foi Hadade e alguns membros da corte que o levaram para o Egito, pois era uma criança nessa altura. 18Conseguiram escapar-se de Midiã e foram a Parã, onde outros se juntaram e os acompanharam até ao Egito, onde o Faraó lhes deu casa e alimentação.
19Hadade tornou-se um dos amigos mais íntimos do Faraó e este deu-lhe por mulher a irmã da rainha Tafnes. 20Teve dela um filho, Genubate, que cresceu no palácio do Faraó com os seus próprios filhos.
21Quando Hadade, estando no Egito, ouviu que David e Joabe tinham ambos morrido, pediu ao Faraó licença para voltar para Edom. 22“Porquê?”, perguntou-lhe o Faraó. “O que é que te falta aqui? Em que é que te desapontámos?” Ao que lhe respondeu: “Tudo me tem corrido maravilhosamente, mas mesmo assim preferia voltar para a minha terra.”
23Outro dos inimigos de Salomão, que Deus permitiu que crescesse em poderio, foi Rezom, filho de Eliada, um dos membros da corte do rei Hadadezer de Zobá. 24Depois de David ter derrotado o exército de Zobá, Rezom reuniu alguns homens e tornou-se chefe um bando de revoltosos. Rezom e os seus homens foram viver para Damasco e ali o proclamaram rei. 25Rezom tornou-se rei de Aram e foi adversário de Israel, durante toda a vida de Salomão. Tal como Hadade, causou-lhes muitos danos, pois odiavam a Israel intensamente.
Jeroboão rebela-se contra Salomão
26Outro chefe rebelde foi Jeroboão, o filho de Nebate, servo de Salomão, que veio da cidade de Zereda em Efraim; a sua mãe era Zeruá, uma viúva.
27Esta é a história da sua rebelião. Salomão estava a reconstruir a fortaleza de Milo, a fazer reparações na muralha desta cidade que o seu pai tinha mandado edificar. 28Jeroboão era muito hábil; quando Salomão constatou as suas aptidões, colocou-o como supervisor de todas as equipas de trabalho das tribos de José.
29Um dia em que Jeroboão saía de Jerusalém, o profeta Aías de Silo, que tinha vestido uma roupa nova para essa ocasião, veio ao seu encontro e chamou-o à parte para conversar com ele. 30Quando os dois se afastaram, já no campo, Aías rasgou o seu fato novo em doze partes. 31E disse a Jeroboão: “Pega em dez destes bocados, pois assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: ‘Rasgarei o reino, tirando-o da mão de Salomão e dar-te-ei dez tribos! 32Contudo, deixar-lhe-ei uma tribo, por amor do meu servo David e de Jerusalém, que escolhi de entre todas as povoações de Israel. 33Porque Salomão me virou as costas e presta culto a Astarote, a deusa dos sidónios, a Quemós, o deus de Moabe, e a Milcom, o deus dos amonitas. Não seguiu os meus caminhos nem exerceu a justiça; não guardou as minhas leis e instruções como David seu pai.
34No entanto, não lhe tirarei agora o reino, por amor do meu servo David, meu escolhido, que obedeceu aos meus mandamentos; deixarei que Salomão reine durante o resto da sua vida. 35Será das mãos do seu filho que tirarei o reino e a ti darei dez tribos. 36Ele ficará com a restante, para que os descendentes de David continuem a reinar em Jerusalém, a cidade que escolhi para que o meu nome seja honrado. 37Colocar-te-ei sobre o trono de Israel e dar-te-ei poder absoluto. 38Se prestares ouvidos às minhas palavras, andares nos meus caminhos e fizeres o que eu considero justo, obedecendo aos meus mandamentos, como fez o meu servo David, então abençoar-te-ei, e os teus descendentes terão um reinado firme para sempre. Fiz esta mesma promessa a David. 39Por causa do pecado de Salomão castigarei os descendentes de David, embora não para sempre.’ ”
40Salomão ainda tentou matar Jeroboão, mas este fugiu para junto do rei Sisaque do Egito e ali ficou até à morte do soberano.
A morte de Salomão

41Quanto ao resto dos feitos de Salomão, o que fez e o que disse, está escrito no Livro das Crónicas de Salomão. 42Salomão reinou em Jerusalém, sobre todo o Israel, durante 40 anos. 43Depois morreu e foi enterrado na Cidade de David. O seu filho Roboão reinou em seu lugar.
Solomon’s Wives
1King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 5He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.
7On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 8He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.
9The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. 10Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command. 11So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. 12Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
Solomon’s Adversaries
14Then the Lord raised up against Solomon an adversary, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom. 15Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom. 16Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom. 17But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father. 18They set out from Midian and went to Paran. Then taking people from Paran with them, they went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.
19Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage. 20The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.
21While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
22“What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?” Pharaoh asked.
“Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but do let me go!”
23And God raised up against Solomon another adversary, Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus, where they settled and took control. 25Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram and was hostile toward Israel.
Jeroboam Rebels Against Solomon
26Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.
27Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces11:27 Or the Millo and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father. 28Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.
29About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country, 30and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. 31Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe. 33I will do this because they have11:33 Hebrew; Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac because he has forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.
34“ ‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees. 35I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes. 36I will give one tribe to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name. 37However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel. 38If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you. 39I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’ ”
40Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.
Solomon’s Death
41As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon? 42Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 43Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.
