Violación del pacto
1Esta es la palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor: 2«Escucha los términos de este pacto y comunícaselos a la gente de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén. 3Diles que así ha dicho el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Maldito aquel que no obedezca los términos de este pacto, 4que yo mismo ordené a los antepasados de ustedes el día que los hice salir de Egipto, de ese horno donde se funde el hierro”. Les dije: “Obedézcanme y cumplan con todos mis mandamientos; entonces ustedes serán mi pueblo y yo seré su Dios. 5Así cumpliré el juramento que hice a sus antepasados de darles una tierra donde abundan la leche y la miel, la cual ustedes tienen hoy”».
Yo respondí: «Amén, Señor».
6El Señor me dijo: «Proclama todo esto en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén, diciendo: “Escuchen los términos de este pacto y cúmplanlos. 7Desde el día en que hice salir a sus antepasados de la tierra de Egipto hasta el día de hoy, una y otra vez he advertido: ‘Obedézcanme’. 8Pero no obedecieron ni prestaron atención, sino que siguieron la terquedad de su malvado corazón. Por eso hice caer sobre ellos todas las maldiciones de este pacto, que yo había ordenado cumplir, pero que no cumplieron”».
9El Señor también me dijo: «Se está fraguando una conspiración entre los hombres de Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén. 10Han vuelto a los mismos pecados de sus antepasados, quienes se negaron a obedecerme. Se han ido tras otros dioses para servirles. Tanto Israel como Judá han quebrantado el pacto que hice con sus antepasados. 11Por eso, así dice el Señor: “Les enviaré una calamidad de la cual no podrán escapar. Aunque clamen a mí, no los escucharé. 12Entonces las ciudades de Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén irán a clamar a los dioses a los que quemaron incienso, pero ellos no podrán salvarlos cuando llegue el tiempo de su calamidad. 13Tú, Judá, tienes tantos dioses como ciudades. Erigiste tantos altares como calles hay en Jerusalén, altares para quemar incienso a Baal, para vergüenza tuya”.
14»En cuanto a ti, Jeremías, no ores por este pueblo. No me ruegues ni me supliques por ellos, porque yo no escucharé cuando clamen a mí por causa de su calamidad.
15»¿Qué hace mi amada en mi casa,
después de haber cometido tantas vilezas?
¿Acaso la carne consagrada alejará de ti la calamidad?
¿Podrás así regocijarte?».
16El Señor te puso por nombre:
«Olivo frondoso, lleno de hermosos frutos».
Pero, en medio de grandes estruendos,
te ha prendido fuego
y tus ramas serán quebradas.
17El Señor de los Ejércitos, el que te plantó, ha decretado una calamidad contra ti, por causa de la maldad que cometieron el pueblo de Israel y la tribu de Judá. Dice el Señor: «Me han ofendido al quemar incienso a Baal».
18El Señor me lo hizo saber y lo comprendí. Me mostró las maldades que habían cometido. 19Pero yo era como un manso cordero que es llevado al matadero; no sabía lo que estaban maquinando contra mí y que decían:
«Destruyamos el árbol con su fruto,
arranquémoslo de la tierra de los vivientes,
para que nadie recuerde más su nombre».
20Pero tú, Señor de los Ejércitos, que juzgas con justicia,
que pruebas la mente y el corazón,
¡déjame ver cómo te vengas de ellos,
porque en tus manos he puesto mi causa!
21«Por eso, así dice el Señor en contra de los hombres de Anatot, que buscan quitarte la vida y afirman: “¡No profetices en nombre del Señor, si no quieres morir a manos nuestras!”. 22Por eso, así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “Voy a castigarlos. Los jóvenes morirán a filo de espada; sus hijos y sus hijas se morirán de hambre. 23No quedará ni uno solo de ellos. En el año de su castigo haré venir una calamidad sobre los hombres de Anatot”».
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2Hear ye the words of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem; 3And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, 4Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God: 5That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Amen 6Then the LORD said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them. 7For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice. 8Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.11.8 imagination: or, stubbornness 9And the LORD said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
11¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.11.11 to escape: Heb. to go forth of 12Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.11.12 trouble: Heb. evil 13For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.11.13 shameful…: Heb. shame 14Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.11.14 trouble: Heb. evil 15What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.11.15 What…: Heb. 18¶ And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings. 19But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.11.19 the tree…: Heb. the stalk with his bread 20But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause. 21Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand: 22Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:11.22 punish: Heb. visit upon 23And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.
