El agua de la roca
1Toda la comunidad israelita partió del desierto de Sin por etapas, según lo había ordenado el Señor. Acamparon en Refidín, pero no había allí agua para que bebieran, 2así que discutieron con Moisés.
—Danos agua para beber —le exigieron.
—¿Por qué discuten conmigo? —se defendió Moisés—. ¿Por qué provocan al Señor?
3Pero los israelitas estaban sedientos, y murmuraron contra Moisés.
—¿Para qué nos sacaste de Egipto? —reclamaban—. ¿Solo para matarnos de sed a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y a nuestro ganado?
4Clamó entonces Moisés al Señor y dijo:
—¿Qué voy a hacer con este pueblo? ¡Solo falta que me maten a pedradas!
5—Adelántate al pueblo —le aconsejó el Señor— y llévate contigo a algunos jefes de Israel, pero lleva también la vara con que golpeaste el Nilo. Ponte en marcha, 6que yo estaré esperándote junto a la roca que está en Horeb. Dale un golpe a la roca, y de ella brotará agua para que beba el pueblo.
Así lo hizo Moisés, a la vista de los jefes de Israel. 7Además, a ese lugar lo llamó Masá,17:7 En hebreo, Masá significa prueba o provocación. y también Meribá,17:7 En hebreo, Meribá significa altercado. porque los israelitas habían probado al Señor y altercado con él, al decir: «¿Está o no está el Señor entre nosotros?».
Derrota de los amalecitas
8Los amalecitas vinieron a Refidín y atacaron a los israelitas. 9Entonces Moisés ordenó a Josué: «Escoge algunos de nuestros hombres y sal a combatir a los amalecitas. Mañana yo estaré en la cima de la colina con la vara de Dios en la mano».
10Josué siguió las órdenes de Moisés y presentó batalla a los amalecitas. Por su parte, Moisés, Aarón y Hur subieron a la cima de la colina. 11Mientras Moisés mantenía los brazos17:11 los brazos (las versiones antiguas); el brazo (TM). en alto, la batalla se inclinaba en favor de los israelitas; pero cuando los bajaba, se inclinaba en favor de los amalecitas. 12Cuando a Moisés se le cansaron los brazos, tomaron una piedra y se la pusieron debajo para que se sentara en ella. Luego Aarón y Hur sostuvieron sus brazos, uno el izquierdo y otro el derecho, y así Moisés pudo mantenerlos firmes hasta la puesta del sol. 13Fue así como Josué derrotó al ejército amalecita a filo de espada.
14Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Pon esto por escrito en un rollo para que se recuerde, y que lo oiga bien Josué: Yo borraré por completo, bajo el cielo, todo rastro de los amalecitas».
15Moisés edificó un altar y lo llamó «El Señor es mi estandarte». 16Y exclamó: «porque levantó su mano contra17:16 O hacia. el trono del Señor,17:16 El significado del hebreo en esta frase es incierto. la guerra del Señor contra Amalec será de generación en generación».
Water Out of the Rock
1The whole community of Israel started out from the Desert of Sin. They traveled from place to place, just as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there wasn’t any water for the people to drink. 2So they argued with Moses. They said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the Lord?”
3But the people were thirsty for water there. So they told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you want us, our children and our livestock to die of thirst?”
4Then Moses cried out to the Lord. He said, “What am I going to do with these people? They are almost ready to kill me by throwing stones at me.”
5The Lord answered Moses. “Go out in front of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel along with you. Take in your hand the walking stick you used when you struck the Nile River. Go. 6I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched. 7Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the Lord. They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Joshua Wins the Battle Over the Amalekites
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I’ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me.”
10So Joshua fought against the Amalekites, just as Moses had ordered. Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites were winning. But every time he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win. 12When Moses’ arms got tired, Aaron and Hur got a stone and put it under him. Then he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset. 13So Joshua destroyed the Amalekite army with swords.
14Then the Lord said to Moses, “This is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.”
15Then Moses built an altar. He called it The Lord Is My Banner. 16He said, “The Amalekites opposed the authority of the Lord. So the Lord will fight against the Amalekites for all time to come.”
