Um Centurião Demonstra Fé
(Mt 8.5-13)
1Tendo terminado de dizer tudo isso ao povo, Jesus entrou em Cafarnaum. 2Ali estava o servo de um centurião, doente e quase à morte, a quem seu senhor estimava muito. 3Ele ouviu falar de Jesus e enviou-lhe alguns líderes religiosos dos judeus, pedindo-lhe que fosse curar o seu servo. 4Chegando-se a Jesus, suplicaram-lhe com insistência: “Este homem merece que lhe faças isso, 5porque ama a nossa nação e construiu a nossa sinagoga”. 6Jesus foi com eles.
Já estava perto da casa quando o centurião mandou amigos dizerem a Jesus: “Senhor, não te incomodes, pois não mereço receber-te debaixo do meu teto. 7Por isso, nem me considerei digno de ir ao teu encontro. Mas dize uma palavra, e o meu servo será curado. 8Pois eu também sou homem sujeito a autoridade e com soldados sob o meu comando. Digo a um: Vá, e ele vai; e a outro: Venha, e ele vem. Digo a meu servo: Faça isto, e ele faz”.
9Ao ouvir isso, Jesus admirou-se dele e, voltando-se para a multidão que o seguia, disse: “Eu digo que nem em Israel encontrei tamanha fé”. 10Então os homens que haviam sido enviados voltaram para casa e encontraram o servo restabelecido.
Jesus Ressuscita o Filho de uma Viúva
11Logo depois, Jesus foi a uma cidade chamada Naim, e com ele iam os seus discípulos e uma grande multidão. 12Ao se aproximar da porta da cidade, estava saindo o enterro do filho único de uma viúva; e uma grande multidão da cidade estava com ela. 13Ao vê-la, o Senhor se compadeceu dela e disse: “Não chore”.
14Depois, aproximou-se e tocou no caixão, e os que o carregavam pararam. Jesus disse: “Jovem, eu digo, levante-se!” 15O jovem7.15 Grego: O morto. sentou-se e começou a conversar, e Jesus o entregou à sua mãe.
16Todos ficaram cheios de temor e louvavam a Deus. “Um grande profeta se levantou dentre nós”, diziam eles. “Deus interveio em favor do seu povo.” 17Essas notícias sobre Jesus espalharam-se por toda a Judeia e regiões circunvizinhas.
Jesus e João Batista
(Mt 11.1-19)
18Os discípulos de João contaram-lhe todas essas coisas. Chamando dois deles, 19enviou-os ao Senhor para perguntarem: “És tu aquele que haveria de vir ou devemos esperar algum outro?”
20Dirigindo-se a Jesus, aqueles homens disseram: “João Batista nos enviou para te perguntarmos: ‘És tu aquele que haveria de vir ou devemos esperar algum outro?’ ” 21Naquele momento Jesus curou muitos que tinham males, doenças graves e espíritos malignos, e concedeu visão a muitos que eram cegos. 22Então ele respondeu aos mensageiros: “Voltem e anunciem a João o que vocês viram e ouviram: os cegos veem, os aleijados andam, os leprosos7.22 O termo grego não se refere somente à lepra, mas também a diversas doenças da pele. são purificados, os surdos ouvem, os mortos são ressuscitados e as boas-novas são pregadas aos pobres; 23e feliz é aquele que não se escandaliza por minha causa”.
24Depois que os mensageiros de João foram embora, Jesus começou a falar à multidão a respeito de João: “O que vocês foram ver no deserto? Um caniço agitado pelo vento? 25Ou, o que foram ver? Um homem vestido de roupas finas? Ora, os que vestem roupas esplêndidas e se entregam ao luxo estão nos palácios. 26Afinal, o que foram ver? Um profeta? Sim, eu digo a vocês, e mais que profeta. 27Este é aquele a respeito de quem está escrito:
“ ‘Enviarei o meu mensageiro à tua frente;
ele preparará o teu caminho diante de ti’7.27 Ml 3.1.
28Eu digo que entre os que nasceram de mulher não há ninguém maior do que João; todavia, o menor no Reino de Deus é maior do que ele”.
29Todo o povo, até os publicanos, ouvindo as palavras de Jesus, reconheceram que o caminho de Deus era justo, sendo batizados por João. 30Mas os fariseus e os peritos na lei rejeitaram o propósito de Deus para eles, não sendo batizados por João.
31“A que posso, pois, comparar os homens desta geração?”, prosseguiu Jesus. “Com que se parecem? 32São como crianças que ficam sentadas na praça e gritam umas às outras:
“ ‘Nós tocamos flauta,
mas vocês não dançaram;
cantamos um lamento,
mas vocês não choraram’.
33Pois veio João Batista, que jejua e não bebe7.33 Grego: não comendo, nem bebendo. vinho, e vocês dizem: ‘Ele tem demônio’. 34Veio o Filho do homem, comendo e bebendo, e vocês dizem: ‘Aí está um comilão e beberrão, amigo de publicanos e pecadores’. 35Mas a sabedoria é comprovada por todos os seus discípulos7.35 Grego: filhos..”
Jesus é Ungido por uma Pecadora
36Convidado por um dos fariseus para jantar, Jesus foi à casa dele e reclinou-se à mesa. 37Ao saber que Jesus estava comendo na casa do fariseu, certa mulher daquela cidade, uma pecadora, trouxe um frasco de alabastro com perfume 38e se colocou atrás de Jesus, a seus pés. Chorando, começou a molhar-lhe os pés com suas lágrimas. Depois os enxugou com seus cabelos, beijou-os e os ungiu com o perfume.
39Ao ver isso, o fariseu que o havia convidado disse a si mesmo: “Se este homem fosse profeta, saberia quem nele está tocando e que tipo de mulher ela é: uma pecadora”.
40Então lhe disse Jesus: “Simão, tenho algo a dizer a você”.
“Dize, Mestre”, disse ele.
41“Dois homens deviam a certo credor. Um lhe devia quinhentos denários7.41 O denário era uma moeda de prata equivalente à diária de um trabalhador braçal. e o outro, cinquenta. 42Nenhum dos dois tinha com que lhe pagar, por isso perdoou a dívida a ambos. Qual deles o amará mais?”
43Simão respondeu: “Suponho que aquele a quem foi perdoada a dívida maior”.
“Você julgou bem”, disse Jesus.
44Em seguida, virou-se para a mulher e disse a Simão: “Vê esta mulher? Entrei em sua casa, mas você não me deu água para lavar os pés; ela, porém, molhou os meus pés com suas lágrimas e os enxugou com seus cabelos. 45Você não me saudou com um beijo, mas esta mulher, desde que entrei aqui, não parou de beijar os meus pés. 46Você não ungiu a minha cabeça com óleo, mas ela derramou perfume nos meus pés. 47Portanto, eu digo, os muitos pecados dela lhe foram perdoados; pois ela amou muito. Mas aquele a quem pouco foi perdoado, pouco ama”.
48Então Jesus disse a ela: “Seus pecados estão perdoados”.
49Os outros convidados começaram a perguntar: “Quem é este que até perdoa pecados?”
50Jesus disse à mulher: “Sua fé a salvou; vá em paz”.
The faith of the centurion
1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was ill and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, ‘This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.’ 6So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: ‘Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go”, and he goes; and that one, “Come”, and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this”, and he does it.’
9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’ 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus raises a widow’s son
11Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out – the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.’
14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up!’ 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’ 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Jesus and John the Baptist
18John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19he sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’
20When the men came to Jesus, they said, ‘John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ’
21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, illnesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22So he replied to the messengers, ‘Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy7:22 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’
24After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is the one about whom it is written:
‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.”7:27 Mal. 3:1
28I tell you, among those born of women there is no-one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’
29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptised by John. 30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptised by John.)
31Jesus went on to say, ‘To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling out to each other:
‘ “We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.”
33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, “He has a demon.” 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” 35But wisdom is proved right by all her children.’
Jesus anointed by a sinful woman
36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’
40Jesus answered him, ‘Simon, I have something to tell you.’
‘Tell me, teacher,’ he said.
41‘Two people owed money to a certain money-lender. One owed him five hundred denarii,7:41 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day labourer (see Matt. 20:2). and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?’
43Simon replied, ‘I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.’
‘You have judged correctly,’ Jesus said.
44Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.’
48Then Jesus said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’
49The other guests began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’
50Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
