A Promessa de Deus a Davi
1O rei Davi já morava em seu palácio quando, certo dia, disse ao profeta Natã: “Aqui estou eu, morando num palácio de cedro, enquanto a arca da aliança do Senhor permanece numa simples tenda”.
2Natã respondeu a Davi: “Faze o que tiveres em mente, pois Deus está contigo”.
3E naquela mesma noite Deus falou a Natã:
4“Vá dizer ao meu servo Davi que assim diz o Senhor: Não é você que vai construir uma casa para eu morar. 5Não tenho morado em nenhuma casa, desde o dia em que tirei Israel do Egito, mas fui de uma tenda para outra, e de um tabernáculo para outro. 6Por onde tenho acompanhado todo o Israel, alguma vez perguntei a algum líder deles, que mandei pastorear o meu povo: Por que você não me construiu um templo de cedro?
7“Agora pois, diga ao meu servo Davi: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eu o tirei das pastagens, onde você cuidava dos rebanhos, para ser o soberano sobre Israel, o meu povo. 8Sempre estive com você por onde você andou, e eliminei todos os seus inimigos. Agora eu o farei tão famoso quanto os homens mais importantes da terra. 9E providenciarei um lugar para Israel, o meu povo, e os plantarei lá, para que tenham o seu próprio lar e não mais sejam incomodados. Povos ímpios não mais os oprimirão, como fizeram no início 10e têm feito desde a época em que nomeei juízes sobre Israel, o meu povo. Também subjugarei todos os seus inimigos. Saiba também que eu, o Senhor, estabelecerei para você uma dinastia. 11Quando a sua vida chegar ao fim e você se juntar aos seus antepassados, escolherei um dos seus filhos para sucedê-lo, e eu estabelecerei o reino dele. 12É ele que vai construir um templo para mim, e eu firmarei o trono dele para sempre. 13Eu serei seu pai, e ele será meu filho. Nunca retirarei dele o meu amor, como retirei de Saul. 14Eu o farei líder do meu povo e do meu reino para sempre; seu reinado será estabelecido para sempre”.
15E Natã transmitiu a Davi tudo o que o Senhor lhe tinha falado e revelado.
A Oração de Davi
16Então o rei Davi entrou no tabernáculo, assentou-se diante do Senhor, e orou:
“Quem sou eu, ó Senhor Deus, e o que é a minha família, para que me trouxesses a este ponto? 17E, como se isso não bastasse para ti, ó Deus, tu falaste sobre o futuro da família deste teu servo. Tens me tratado como um homem de grande importância, ó Senhor Deus.
18“O que mais Davi poderá dizer-te por honrares o teu servo? Tu conheces o teu servo, 19ó Senhor. Por amor do teu servo e de acordo com tua vontade, realizaste este feito grandioso e tornaste conhecidas todas essas grandes promessas.
20“Não há ninguém como tu, ó Senhor, nem há outro Deus além de ti, conforme tudo o que sabemos. 21E quem é como Israel, o teu povo, a única nação da terra que tu, ó Deus, resgataste para ti mesmo, e assim tornaste o teu nome famoso, realizando grandes e impressionantes maravilhas ao expulsar nações de diante do povo que libertaste do Egito? 22Tu fizeste de Israel o teu povo especial para sempre, e tu, ó Senhor, te tornaste o seu Deus.
23“Agora, Senhor, que a promessa que fizeste a respeito de teu servo e de sua descendência se confirme para sempre. Faze conforme prometeste, 24para que tudo se confirme, para que o teu nome seja engrandecido para sempre e os homens digam: ‘O Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, é Deus para Israel!’ E a descendência de teu servo Davi se manterá firme diante de ti.
25“Tu, meu Deus, revelaste a teu servo que formarás uma dinastia para ele. Por isso teu servo achou coragem para orar a ti. 26Ó Senhor, tu és Deus! Tu fizeste essa boa promessa a teu servo. 27Agora, por tua bondade, abençoa a família de teu servo, para que ela continue para sempre na tua presença; pois o que tu, Senhor, abençoas, abençoado está para sempre”.
God’s promise to David
1After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, ‘Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.’
2Nathan replied to David, ‘Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.’
3But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:
4‘Go and tell my servant David, “This is what the Lord says: you are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. 5I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling-place to another. 6Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders17:6 Traditionally judges; also in verse 10 whom I commanded to shepherd my people, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ”
7‘Now then, tell my servant David, “This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. 8I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. 9And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 10and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.
‘ “I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: 11when your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne for ever. 13I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14I will set him over my house and my kingdom for ever; his throne will be established for ever.” ’
15Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
David’s prayer
16Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
‘Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.
18‘What more can David say to you for honouring your servant? For you know your servant, 19Lord. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.
20‘There is no-one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21And who is like your people Israel – the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22You made your people Israel your very own for ever, and you, Lord, have become their God.
23‘And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established for ever. Do as you promised, 24so that it will be established and that your name will be great for ever. Then people will say, “The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!” And the house of your servant David will be established before you.
25‘You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue for ever in your sight; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed for ever.’
