Österländska stjärntydare hyllar Jesus
1Jesus föddes i Betlehem i Judeen under kung Herodes regeringstid. Då kom några österländska stjärntydare till Jerusalem 2och frågade: ”Var finns judarnas nyfödda kung? Vi har sett hans stjärna gå upp i vårt eget land och har kommit för att hylla2:2 Eller: för att tillbe. honom.”
3Kung Herodes blev skräckslagen, och hela Jerusalem med honom. 4Han kallade därför samman folkets överstepräster och skriftlärda2:4 Skriftlärda var både experter på lagen, Bibelns (Gamla testamentets) första del och kände väl till de heliga skrifterna över huvud taget. (Judarna delar upp Gamla testamentet i lagen, profeterna och skrifterna.) och frågade dem om de visste var Messias skulle födas.
5”I Betlehem i Judeen”, svarade de, ”för så här skrev profeten:
6’Du Betlehem i Judas land,
du är inte den mest oansenlige bland Judas furstar,
för en härskare ska komma från dig,
en som blir en herde för mitt folk Israel.2:6 Se Mika 5:2.’ ”
7Då kallade Herodes i hemlighet till sig stjärntydarna igen för att få reda på den exakta tidpunkten då de först hade sett stjärnan. 8”Res till Betlehem och leta efter barnet”, sa han till dem. ”Och när ni har hittat det, kom då tillbaka och tala om det för mig, så att jag också kan resa dit och hylla2:8 Eller: och tillbe. det.”
9Efter samtalet med kungen gav stjärntydarna sig iväg, och då visade sig den stjärna igen som de hade sett gå upp i deras eget land. Den gick före dem tills den stannade över det ställe där barnet fanns.
10Stjärntydarna blev mycket glada då de fick se stjärnan, 11och de gick in i huset och fann barnet och hans mor, Maria. Där föll de ner för honom och hyllade2:11 Eller: och tillbad. honom. Sedan tog de fram sina kistor och gav barnet gåvor. Det var guld, rökelse och myrra2:11 Rökelse och myrra var välluktande växtämnen som användes i templet och vid kungliga bröllop. Gåvorna var en symbol för att Jesus är Messias.. 12Men när de skulle återvända till sitt eget land, reste de aldrig tillbaka till kung Herodes, för de hade varnats för det genom en dröm, och därför tog de en annan väg.
Flykten till Egypten
13När stjärntydarna hade rest sin väg visade sig en Herrens ängel i en dröm för Josef. Ängeln sa: ”Stig upp och fly till Egypten med barnet och hans mor och stanna där tills jag säger till, för kung Herodes kommer att leta efter barnet och försöka döda det.”
14Då gav sig Josef iväg till Egypten tillsammans med barnet och hans mor 15och stannade där tills Herodes hade dött. Genom detta gick det i uppfyllelse som Herren hade förutsagt genom profeten: ”Ut ur Egypten kallade jag min Son.”2:15 Se Hos 11:1.
16Herodes blev rasande när han förstod att stjärntydarna hade lurat honom. Han gav order om att döda alla pojkar som var två år eller yngre, både i Betlehem och dess omgivning, med den tidsangivelse som utgångspunkt som han fått reda på av stjärntydarna. 17Då gick det i uppfyllelse som profeten Jeremia förutsagt:
18”Ett rop hörs i Rama,
klagan och bitter gråt.
Rakel gråter över sina barn
och låter sig inte tröstas,
för de finns inte mer.”2:18 Se Jer 31:15.
Hemkomsten till Israel
19När Herodes hade dött visade sig en Herrens ängel i en dröm för Josef i Egypten 20och sa till honom: ”Gör dig klar, ta med dig barnet och hans mor och res tillbaka till Israels land, för de som försökte döda barnet är döda.”
21Josef återvände då genast till Israels land med barnet och hans mor. 22Men på vägen tillbaka blev han rädd, eftersom han fick veta att Herodes son, Archelaos, nu hade blivit kung i Judeen. I en annan dröm blev han därför uppmanad att resa till Galileen 23och bosatte sig i staden Nasaret. Genom detta gick det i uppfyllelse som profeterna förutsagt: Han ska kallas nasaré.2:23 Detta hänvisar till vad profeterna har skrivit om Jesus i Gamla testamentet. Nasaré kan också syfta på neser (skottet från Jishajs stam, jfr Jes 11:1) eller på nasir (en person som lever avskild för Gud).
The Wise Men Visit Jesus
1Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea. This happened while Herod was king of Judea. After Jesus’ birth, Wise Men from the east came to Jerusalem. 2They asked, “Where is the child who has been born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose. Now we have come to worship him.”
3When King Herod heard about it, he was very upset. Everyone in Jerusalem was troubled too. 4So Herod called together all the chief priests of the people. He also called the teachers of the law. He asked them where the Messiah was going to be born. 5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied. “This is what the prophet has written. He said,
6“ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are certainly not the least important among the towns of Judah.
A ruler will come out of you.
He will rule my people Israel like a shepherd.’ ” (Micah 5:2)
7Then Herod secretly called for the Wise Men. He found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem. He said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report it to me. Then I can go and worship him too.”
9After the Wise Men had listened to the king, they went on their way. The star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them. It finally stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. 11The Wise Men went to the house. There they saw the child with his mother Mary. They bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures. They gave him gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12But God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they returned to their country on a different road.
Jesus’ Family Escapes to Egypt
13When the Wise Men had left, Joseph had a dream. In the dream an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph. “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you to come back. Herod is going to search for the child. He wants to kill him.”
14So Joseph got up. During the night, he left for Egypt with the child and his mother Mary. 15They stayed there until King Herod died. So the words the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true. He had said, “I brought my son out of Egypt.” (Hosea 11:1)
16Herod realized that the Wise Men had tricked him. So he became very angry. He gave orders about Bethlehem and the area around it. He ordered all the boys two years old and under to be killed. This agreed with the time when the Wise Men had seen the star. 17In this way, the words Jeremiah the prophet spoke came true. He had said,
18“A voice is heard in Ramah.
It’s the sound of crying and deep sadness.
Rachel is crying over her children.
She refuses to be comforted,
because they are gone.” (Jeremiah 31:15)
Jesus’ Family Returns to Nazareth
19After Herod died, Joseph had a dream while he was still in Egypt. In the dream an angel of the Lord appeared to him. 20The angel said, “Get up! Take the child and his mother. Go to the land of Israel. The people who were trying to kill the child are dead.”
21So Joseph got up. He took the child and his mother Mary back to the land of Israel. 22But then he heard that Archelaus was king of Judea. Archelaus was ruling in place of his father Herod. This made Joseph afraid to go there. Joseph had been warned in a dream. So he went back to the land of Galilee instead. 23There he lived in a town called Nazareth. So what the prophets had said about Jesus came true. They had said that he would be called a Nazarene.
