Jesus botar en förlamad man vid Betesda
1Lite senare gick Jesus till Jerusalem under en av de judiska högtiderna. 2I Jerusalem, nära Fårporten, finns en damm som på hebreiska kallas Betesda5:2 Andra läsarter: Betsaida och Betsata., och den har fem pelargångar. 3Många sjuka, blinda, förlamade och andra handikappade låg i dessa pelargångar [och väntade på att vattnet skulle komma i rörelse. 4En Herrens ängel steg nämligen ner då och då i dammen och rörde om vattnet, och den förste som steg ner i vattnet sedan det blivit omrört blev frisk, vilken sjukdom han än hade.]5:4 De tidigaste och bästa handskrifterna saknar orden inom klammer. De ger dock en bakgrund till v. 7, varför de tagits med i texten här, trots att de bara finns i senare läsarter.
5En av dem som låg där var en man som hade varit förlamad i trettioåtta år. 6När Jesus såg honom ligga där och fick veta att han hade varit sjuk så länge, frågade han honom: ”Vill du bli frisk?”
7”Herre”, svarade mannen, ”jag har ingen som hjälper mig ner i dammen när vattnet kommer i rörelse. Medan jag fortfarande är på väg, hinner någon annan dit före mig.”
8Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Res dig upp, ta din bädd och gå!” 9Genast blev mannen frisk, och han tog sin bädd och gick iväg.
Men detta hände på sabbaten5:9 På vilodagen, som var instiftad redan i skapelsen, se 1 Mos 2:3, fick inget onödigt arbete utföras, vilket man nu menade att både den botade och Jesus (v. 16) gjorde., 10och judarna sa till mannen som hade blivit botad: ”Det är sabbat. Du får inte bära din bädd!”
11Men mannen svarade: ”Han som gjorde mig frisk sa till mig att ta min bädd och gå.”
12Då frågade de honom: ”Vem sa till dig att du skulle ta den och gå?”
13Men mannen visste inte det, för Jesus hade försvunnit därifrån eftersom det var så mycket folk. 14Senare fann Jesus mannen i templet och sa till honom: ”Nu är du frisk. Synda inte mer, så att det inte händer dig något värre.”
15Då gick mannen och talade om för judarna att det var Jesus som hade gjort honom frisk.
Jesus förklarar att han är Guds Son
16Från och med nu började judarna förfölja Jesus, eftersom han hade gjort detta på sabbaten. 17Men Jesus sa till dem: ”Min Fader är ständigt i arbete, och även jag arbetar.”
18Då blev judarna ännu mer ivriga att döda honom, eftersom han inte bara bröt mot sabbatsbudet, utan dessutom talade om Gud som sin Fader och därmed jämställde sig själv med Gud.
19Men Jesus svarade dem: ”Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: Sonen kan inte göra något av sig själv. Han gör bara det som han ser sin Fader göra. Det Fadern gör, det gör också Sonen. 20Fadern älskar Sonen och visar honom allt vad han gör. Och han ska visa honom ännu större ting, så att ni häpnar. 21Så som Fadern uppväcker de döda och ger dem liv, så ger också Sonen liv åt dem han vill. 22Fadern dömer ingen utan har överlåtit all dom åt Sonen, 23för att alla ska ära Sonen på samma sätt som de ärar Fadern. Men den som inte ärar Sonen, ärar inte heller Fadern, som har sänt honom.
24Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: den som hör mitt ord och tror på honom som har sänt mig, han har evigt liv. Han kommer inte att dömas, utan har gått över från döden till livet. 25Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: det kommer en stund, ja, den är faktiskt redan här, då de döda ska höra Guds Sons röst. Och de som hör den ska få liv. 26Fadern har liv i sig själv, och han har också gett Sonen liv i sig själv. 27Han har gett honom makten att döma, eftersom han är Människosonen. 28Bli inte förvånade. Det kommer en stund då alla som ligger i sina gravar ska höra hans röst 29och komma ut ur dem. De som har gjort det goda ska uppstå till livet, och de som har gjort det onda ska uppstå till dom.
30Men jag kan inte göra något av mig själv. Jag dömer utifrån vad jag hör, och min dom är rättvis, eftersom jag inte söker min egen vilja utan hans vilja som har sänt mig.
Vittnesbörd om Jesus
31Om jag vittnar om mig själv, är inte mitt vittnesbörd trovärdigt. 32Men det finns en annan som vittnar om mig, och jag vet att det han vittnar om mig är trovärdigt. 33Ni har ju själva skickat några till Johannes, och han har vittnat för sanningen. 34Jag har inget behov av någon människas vittnesbörd om mig, men jag berättar detta för att ni ska bli räddade. 35Johannes var en brinnande lampa som lyste, och ni kunde glädjas åt hans ljus. 36Jag har ett starkare vittnesbörd än Johannes. För de verk min Fader har gett mig att slutföra och som jag gör, de vittnar om att han har sänt mig. 37Fadern själv, han som har sänt mig, har också vittnat om mig, men ni har inte hört hans röst eller sett hans gestalt, 38och hans ord blir inte heller kvar i er, för ni tror inte på honom som han har sänt.
39Ni forskar i Skrifterna, eftersom ni tror att de ger er evigt liv. Det är just de som vittnar om mig, 40men ni vill inte komma till mig för att få liv.
41Jag strävar inte efter att bli ärad av människor, 42men jag vet att ni inte har Guds kärlek inom er. 43Jag har kommit i min Faders namn, och ni vägrar att ta emot mig. Men om någon kommer i sitt eget namn, då tar ni emot honom. 44Hur skulle ni kunna tro, ni som vill bli ärade av varandra, ni som inte söker ära av honom som ensam är Gud? 45Tänk inte att jag ska anklaga er inför min Fader. Nej, er anklagare är Mose, som ni sätter ert hopp till. 46Om ni trodde på Mose, skulle ni tro på mig, för det är mig han har skrivit om. 47Men eftersom ni inte tror på det han har skrivit, så tror ni väl inte heller på det jag säger?”
The Healing at the Pool
1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda5:2 Some manuscripts Bethzatha; other manuscripts Bethsaida and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 45:3,4 Some manuscripts include here, wholly or in part, paralyzed—and they waited for the moving of the waters. 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
11But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
19Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
24“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Testimonies About Jesus
31“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33“You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36“I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39You study5:39 Or 39 Study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
41“I do not accept glory from human beings, 42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God5:44 Some early manuscripts the Only One?
45“But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
