Simson avslöjar sin hemlighet
1En dag gick Simson till filistéernas stad Gaza och såg där en prostituerad som han gick till. 2Snart fick invånarna i Gaza veta att han var där och de omringade platsen och låg på lur vid stadsporten. De låg stilla hela natten och tänkte: ”I morgon ska vi ta honom och döda honom i gryningen.”
3Simson stannade kvar där till midnatt. Då gick han upp, lyfte av stadsportarnas dörrar med bom och allt, lade dem på sina axlar och gick iväg med dem upp till toppen av det berg som ligger mitt emot Hebron.
4En tid senare blev han kär i en kvinna som hette Delila och bodde vid bäcken Sorek. 5Filistéernas ledare gick då till henne och bad henne lura honom att avslöja vad det var som gjorde honom så stark. De ville övermanna honom och slå honom i kedjor. ”Vi ska då ge dig 1 100 siklar silver”, lovade de.
6Delila sa till Simson: ”Tala om för mig varför du är så stark! Hur gör man för att besegra och binda dig?” 7”Om man binder mig med sju sensträngar som inte hunnit torka, blir jag lika svag som en vanlig människa”, svarade Simson.
8De filisteiska ledarna kom då till henne med sju färska sensträngar som inte hunnit torka och hon band honom. 9Några filistéer hade gömt sig i ett angränsande rum och hon ropade: ”Simson! Filistéerna är här!” Men han slet av senorna som om de varit trådar svedda av eld och hemligheten till hans styrka hade inte blivit avslöjad.
10Senare sa Delila till honom: ”Du driver med mig och ljuger för mig! Nu måste du tala om för mig hur man kan binda dig.” 11”Jo”, sa han. ”Om man binder mig med rep som aldrig varit använda, blir jag lika svag som andra människor.”
12Delila tog nya rep och band honom med dem. Också denna gång hade några män gömt sig i ett angränsande rum och Delila ropade: ”Simson! Filistéerna är här!” Men han slet sönder repen som om de varit trådar.
13”Du har lurat mig igen och på nytt ljugit för mig!” klagade Delila. ”Tala nu om för mig hur man kan binda dig.” ”Väv in mina sju flätor i varpen till din väv16:13 Grundtexten med detaljerna i vävstolen är svåröversättlig och den exakta innebörden osäker.,” svarade Simson. ”Plugga fast dem, så blir jag lika svag som andra människor.”
14När han somnat, slog hon fast dem med pluggen och ropade: ”Filistéerna är här, Simson!” Han vaknade och drog genast loss både pluggen och varpen. 15”Hur kan du säga att du älskar mig på samma gång som du bedrar mig?” invände hon. ”Nu har du ljugit för mig tre gånger och inte talat om vad det är som gör att du är så stark!” 16Hon tjatade på honom varje dag tills han var dödstrött på henne 17och till slut avslöjade han hela hemligheten för henne:
”Mitt hår har aldrig blivit klippt”, sa han. ”Jag har varit en Guds nasir ända sedan min födelse. Om man rakar av mig håret, lämnar styrkan mig och jag blir lika svag som vilken annan människa som helst.”
18Delila insåg att han äntligen hade sagt henne sanningen och därför skickade hon efter filistéernas ledare.
”Kom en sista gång, för nu har han talat om hur det ligger till”, sa hon. De kom och hade med sig pengarna till henne.
19Delila såg till att Simson somnade i hennes knä och tillkallade genast en man som skar av honom hans sju flätor. Då började hon förnedra honom. Hans styrka hade lämnat honom.
20Då ropade hon: ”Filistéerna är här, Simson!” Simson vaknade och tänkte: ”Jag gör väl som förut. Jag skakar mig fri.”
Men han visste inte att Herren hade lämnat honom. 21Filistéerna tog honom till fånga. De stack ut ögonen på honom och förde honom till Gaza där han blev bunden med kopparkedjor. Han tvingades att mala säd i fängelset, 22men håret på hans rakade huvud började växa ut igen.
Simsons sista seger
23Filistéerna ställde till med en stor glädjefest och kom med offer till sin gud Dagon och sa:
”Vår gud har utlämnat
vår fiende Simson till oss!”
24När folket såg honom, lovade de sin gud:
”Vår gud har överlämnat
vår fiende åt oss,
han som har ödelagt vårt land
och dödat så många av oss.”
25I sin segeryra bad de att Simson skulle föras ut till dem, så att de kunde roa sig med honom. Simson fördes då ut ur fängelset och tvingades roa dem. De ställde honom mellan pelarna. 26Simson sa till pojken som ledde honom: ”Låt mig få hålla i pelarna som bär upp huset, så att jag kan stödja mig mot dem!”
27Huset var då alldeles fullt av folk. Filistéernas ledare var också där och på taket fanns 3 000 personer som såg på när man roade sig med Simson.
28Då bad Simson till Herren och sa: ”Herre, tänk på mig och ge mig styrka än en gång, så jag kan hämnas på filistéerna för mina båda ögon!”
29Sedan tog han tag i de två mittpelarna som bar upp huset och tryckte sig mot dem med högra handen mot den ena och med vänstra mot den andra pelaren. 30”Låt mig dö med filistéerna”, sa han. Sedan tryckte han till med all sin kraft och huset rasade samman över filistéernas ledare och allt folket och de som dog vid Simsons död var fler till antalet än de han tidigare hade dödat under hela sin livstid.
31Senare kom hans bröder och familj dit för att hämta hans kropp. Simson som varit domare i Israel i tjugo år, begravdes mellan Sora och Eshtaol i samma grav där hans far Manoach var begravd.

And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web. 14And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15¶ And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;16.16 vexed: Heb. shortened 17That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
21¶ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.16.21 put out: Heb. bored out
