Jesus ska komma tillbaka
1Detta är mitt andra brev till er, mina kära, och i båda breven har jag genom mina påminnelser velat väcka ert rena sinne. 2Jag har velat påminna er om de heliga profeternas förutsägelser och om vår Herres och Frälsares bud, som ni har hört från era apostlar.
3Först av allt måste ni veta att det under den sista tiden ska komma personer som drivs av sina begär och som kommer att håna er. 4De ska säga: ”Var är nu löftet om att han ska komma tillbaka? Alltsedan våra förfäders död har ju allting varit sig likt, ända sedan världen skapades.”
5Men när de säger så, glömmer de att himlarna och jorden för länge sedan hade blivit till genom Guds ord, och att jorden uppstod ur vatten och genom vatten.3:5 Jfr 1 Mos 1:2,6,9. 6Den dåtida världen dränktes sedan i vatten och gick under.3:6 Jfr 1 Mos 7:17-21. 7Men de himlar och den jord som nu existerar har genom samma ord förvarats åt elden, sparats till domens dag, då de ogudaktiga ska förintas.
8Men glöm inte detta, mina kära, att för Herren är en dag som tusen år, och tusen år som en dag.3:8 Jfr Ps 90:4. 9Det är inte så som många tror, att Herren är sen med att infria sitt löfte. Nej, han väntar för er skull, eftersom han inte vill att någon ska gå förlorad utan alla ska ha tid att vända om. 10Men Herrens dag kommer som en tjuv. Då ska himlarna försvinna med ett dån, himlakropparna3:10 Eller: dån, grundämnena. upplösas i eld, och jorden och allt som har skapats på den ska utplånas.3:10 Enligt andra handskrifter allt som är på den ska brännas upp; grundtextens innebörd är osäker. Jfr Ps 102:26-27 och Jes 51:5.
11När nu allt detta alltså ska upplösas, hur heligt och gudfruktigt ska ni då inte leva, 12medan ni väntar på Guds dag och påskyndar den! Då ska himlarna upplösas i eld och grundämnena smälta av hetta. 13Men enligt hans löfte ser vi fram emot nya himlar och en ny jord, där rättfärdighet bor.3:13 Jfr Jes 65:17; 66:22.
Slutliga förmaningar
14När ni nu ser fram emot detta, mina kära, ska ni göra allt för att leva fläckfritt, oklanderligt och i frid inför honom. 15Betrakta vår Herres tålamod som något som innebär räddning. Det har ju också vår käre bror Paulus skrivit till er om, med den vishet han har fått ifrån Gud. 16Det gör han i alla sina brev när han talar om dessa ting. Det finns en del i hans brev som är svårt att förstå, sådant som okunniga och labila människor förvränger, precis som de förvränger annat som står i Skrifterna3:16 Utöver Gamla testamentet hade de troende nu även börjat använda några av de texter som skulle komma att ingå i Nya testamentet., till sitt eget fördärv.
17Nu har ni fått veta detta i förväg, mina kära, så var på er vakt, så att ni inte luras bort i de gudlösas villfarelse och förlorar det ni står fast vid. 18Väx till i nåd och kunskap om vår Herre och Frälsare Jesus Kristus. Hans är äran, både nu och till evighetens dag, amen.
The day of the Lord
1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles.
3Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, ‘Where is this “coming” he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’ 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.3:10 Some manuscripts be burned up
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.3:12 Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
