Elisha förser en änka med olja
1En dag kom hustrun till en av profetlärjungarna och sa till Elisha: ”Din tjänare, min man, har dött. Du vet att han fruktade Herren, men nu kommer fordringsägaren och tar mina båda söner till slavar.” 2”Vad kan jag göra för dig?” frågade Elisha. ”Vad har du i huset?” ”Jag, din tjänarinna, har ingenting alls. Bara lite olja i krukan”, svarade hon. 3”Gå och låna krukor och kannor från dina grannar och vänner, och inte bara några få”, sa han till henne. 4”Sedan ska du och dina söner gå in i huset och stänga dörren efter er. Häll olja i alla krukor och kannor och ställ dem sedan åt sidan när de är fulla.”
5Hon gick från honom, stängde dörren efter sig och sina söner, och de bar fram krukor och kannor till henne, som hon fyllde, den ena efter den andra, 6tills allesammans var fulla till brädden. ”Ge mig en kanna till”, sa hon till en av sönerna. ”Det finns inga fler”, svarade han, och genast tog oljeflödet slut.
7När hon gick till gudsmannen och talade om vad som hade hänt, sa han till henne: ”Gå och sälj oljan! Sedan kan du betala din skuld, och det som blir över kan du och dina söner leva av.”
En barnlös kvinna blir lovad en son
8En dag gick Elisha till Shunem, där det fanns en förmögen kvinna som övertalade honom att stanna och äta hos henne. Så gjorde han sedan varje gång han besökte staden, han stannade där och bjöds på mat.
9”Jag är övertygad om att mannen som kommer hit nu och då är en helig gudsman”, sa kvinnan till sin man. 10”Låt oss göra i ordning ett litet rum åt honom på taket. Vi kan ställa in en säng, ett bord, en stol och en lampa, så har han någonstans att bo när han kommer hit.”
11En gång när Elisha kom, gick han in i rummet och vilade där. 12Då sa han till sin tjänare Gechasi: ”Kalla hit shunemitiskan!”
När hon kom, 13sa han till Gechasi: ”Säg till henne: ’Nu har du gjort allt detta besvär för oss. Är det någonting jag kan göra för dig? Kanske lägga ett gott ord för dig hos kungen eller överbefälhavaren?’ ” ”Nej, jag är fullkomligt nöjd som det är här bland de mina”, svarade hon.
14”Men finns det då inget vi kan göra för henne?” frågade Elisha Gechasi efteråt. ”Hon har ingen son”, svarade han. ”Och hennes man är gammal.” 15”Be henne komma tillbaka”, sa Elisha.
När hon kom tillbaka, stannade hon vid dörren. 16Elisha sa: ”Nästa år vid den här tiden kommer du att ha en son i dina armar.” ”Nej, du gudsman, lura inte mig, din tjänarinna, på det sättet”, sa hon.
17Men hon blev snart gravid, och året därpå fick hon en son, precis som Elisha hade förutsagt.
Kvinnans son blir sjuk och dör
18En dag när pojken var större gick han ut till sin far, som arbetade tillsammans med skördemännen på fälten. 19Han klagade: ”Mitt huvud, mitt huvud!” ”Bär hem honom till hans mor”, sa då fadern till en av tjänarna.
20Tjänaren bar hem honom, och han satt i sin moders knä till middagstiden. Sedan dog han. 21Då bar hon upp honom och lade honom på gudsmannens säng och stängde dörren. 22Sedan meddelade hon sin man: ”Sänd hit en av tjänarna och en åsna, så att jag kan skynda mig till gudsmannen. Jag är snart tillbaka.”
23”Varför just i dag? Det är ju varken nymånadsfest eller sabbat”, sa han. ”Var lugn”, svarade hon.
24Hon lät sadla åsnan och sa till tjänaren: ”Driv på! Och stanna inte någonstans förrän jag säger till.”
25Hon gav sig iväg, och när hon kom till gudsmannen på berget Karmel, fick han se henne på avstånd och sa till Gechasi: ”Titta, där är kvinnan från Shunem! 26Spring och möt henne och fråga hur det är med hennes man och hör efter om barnet mår bra.” ”Allting är bra”, sa hon till Gechasi.
27Men när hon kom fram till gudsmannen på berget, tog hon tag om hans fötter. Gechasi försökte få bort henne därifrån, men gudsmannen sa: ”Låt henne vara! Det är någonting som gör henne förtvivlad, och Herren har dolt det för mig och inte talat om för mig vad det är.”
28”Det var väl inte jag som bad om att få en son? Bad jag inte dig att inte lura mig och ge mig falska förhoppningar?” sa hon.
Elisha uppväcker den döde pojken
29Då sa han till Gechasi: ”Fäst upp dina kläder, ta min stav och skynda dig iväg. Om du möter någon under vägen, hälsa inte på honom, och om någon hälsar på dig, svara inte. Lägg staven över barnets ansikte.”
30”Nej, så sant Herren och du själv lever, jag lämnar dig inte”, sa barnets mor, och Elisha följde då med henne.
31Gechasi skyndade sig före dem och lade staven på pojkens ansikte, men ingenting hände, varken ljud eller andra livstecken kom. Gechasi vände då tillbaka, och när han mötte Elisha sa han: ”Pojken har inte vaknat upp.”
32När Elisha kom in i huset, låg pojken död på hans säng. 33Han gick in i rummet, stängde dörren om sig och bad till Herren. 34Sedan lade han sig över pojkens kropp, placerade sin mun mot hans mun, sina ögon mot hans ögon och sina händer över hans händer, och när han nu lutade sig över honom, började pojkens kropp bli varm. 35Elisha gick fram och tillbaka i rummet och sträckte sig ännu en gång över pojken. Pojken nös då sju gånger och slog upp ögonen.
36Elisha kallade till sig Gechasi och bad honom kalla på shunemitiskan. När hon kom in i rummet sa han: ”Här är din son!”
37Hon föll då ner på marken vid hans fötter, tog sedan sin son och gick ut.
En förgiftad stuvning blir ätlig
38Elisha återvände nu till Gilgal. Det var hungersnöd i området, och en dag när profetskaran satt framför honom bad han sin tjänare: ”Ta fram en stor gryta och gör i ordning en stuvning åt männen!”
39En av männen gick då ut för att samla växter och kom tillbaka med manteln full av frukter från en slingerväxt. Han skar sönder dem och lade dem i grytan, trots att ingen kände till dem. 40Men när stuvningen östes upp och männen började äta, utbrast de: ”Döden är i grytan, du gudsman!” Och de kunde inte äta maten.
41”Ge mig lite mjöl”, sa Elisha. Han tog mjölet och kastade det i grytan. ”Ös upp, fortsätt och ät!” sa han. Och nu var det inte längre något skadligt i grytan.
En liten säck mjöl räcker till många
42En dag kom en man från Baal Shalisha. Han hade med sig tjugo kornbröd till gudsmannen, bröd som bakats av mjöl från den första skörden, och färska ax från sin gröda i sin påse. Elisha sa: ”Ge det åt folket att äta!” 43”Vad menar du? Skulle det här räcka till hundra personer?” invände hans tjänare. ”Ge det åt folket att äta, för så säger Herren: ’Det ska räcka åt alla och till och med bli över’ ”, sa Elisha.
44Han gjorde i ordning maten åt dem, och det blev som Herren hade sagt.
The Widow’s Olive Oil
1The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
2Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”
3Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”
5She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”
But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
7She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”
The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life
8One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. 9She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”
11One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him. 13Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’ ”
She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”
14“What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.
Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”
15Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16“About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”
“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”
17But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
18The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19He said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.
22She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
23“Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.
24She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’ ”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
27When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”
28“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
29Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
30But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
31Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
32When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
36Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.” 37She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.
Death in the Pot
38Elisha returned to Gilgal and there was a famine in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”
39One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
41Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
Feeding of a Hundred
42A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.
43“How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’ ” 44Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.
