Elisha förutsäger segern över Moab
1Achavs son Joram blev kung över Israel i Samaria under Joshafats artonde regeringsår över Juda, och han regerade i tolv år. 2Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, men inte så som sin far och mor, för han lät åtminstone riva ner den baalspelare som hans far hade rest. 3Men trots det höll han fast vid Nevats sons, Jerobeams, synder som han hade förlett Israels folk till och övergav dem inte.
4Kung Mesha i Moab var fårfarmare. Han hade försett Israel med 100 000 lamm och ull från 100 000 baggar, 5men efter Achavs död gjorde kungen i Moab uppror mot Israel. 6Kung Joram drog då ut från Samaria och mönstrade hela den israelitiska armén. 7Han skickade följande meddelande till Joshafat, kungen i Juda: ”Moabs kung har gjort uppror mot mig. Vill du hjälpa mig att strida mot Moab?” ”Ja”, svarade Joshafat. ”Det ska jag, tillsammans med dig, och mitt folk och mina hästar likaså, tillsammans med ditt folk och dina hästar.” 8”Vilken väg ska vi ta?” frågade Joshafat. ”Vi ska gå till anfall från Edoms öken”, svarade Joram.
9Israels och Juda kungar gav sig iväg tillsammans med Edoms kung och gick en omväg, som tog sju dagar i anspråk. Vattnet tog då slut för både soldaterna och djuren.
10”Vad ska vi ta oss till?” utbrast Israels kung. ”Har Herren fört oss tre kungar hit bara för att överlämna oss åt Moab?” 11Men Joshafat frågade: ”Finns det inte någon Herrens profet här, så att vi kan rådfråga Herren?” ”Elisha, Shafats son, är här”, svarade en av Israels kungs officerare. ”Han som hällde vatten över Elias händer3:11 Vilket betyder att han var Elias tjänare..” 12”Han har Herrens ord med sig”, sa Joshafat.
Kungen i Israel, Joshafat och Edoms kung gick alltså för att fråga Elisha till råds.
13Elisha sa till den israelitiske kungen: ”Vad har jag med dig att göra? Gå till din fars profeter och till din mors!”
”Nej”, svarade kung Joram. ”Herren har kallat oss tre kungar hit för att överlämna oss åt Moab!”
14”Så sant härskarornas Herre lever, han som jag tjänar, jag skulle inte bry mig om dig eller ens notera dig, om det inte vore för Juda kung Joshafats skull”, svarade Elisha. 15”Nåväl, skaffa nu hit någon som spelar harpa!”
Och medan harpan spelade kom Herrens hand över Elisha.
16Han sa: ”Så säger Herren: Gräv grop vid grop här i dalen! 17Ni ska inte se någon vind eller något regn, men den här dalen ska fyllas med vatten, så att det finns tillräckligt för er och alla djuren att dricka. 18Det här är bara början, för Herren ska överlämna Moab åt er. 19Ni ska inta varje befäst stad och varje viktig ort. Ni ska hugga ner varje gott träd, fylla igen alla deras brunnar och förstöra åkrarna med sten.”
20Dagen därpå, när det var dags för morgonoffret, kom vatten strömmande från Edom, så att det snart fanns vatten överallt i landet.
21Under tiden fick folket i Moab höra talas om kungarna som kom marscherande mot dem. Då mobiliserade de alla stridsdugliga män, både unga och gamla, och ställde upp utmed gränsen. 22Men tidigt följande morgon när solen gick upp och lyste på vattnet, såg det för moabiterna ut att vara rött som blod.
23”Det är blod!” ropade de. ”Kungarna har råkat i strid och dödat varandra! Nu går vi dit och tar bytet!”
24Men när de kom fram till Israels läger, rusade Israels soldater ut och anföll dem, så att Moabs armé måste fly. Och Israels armé drog in i landet och slog moabiterna. 25De förstörde städerna och kastade sten på de goda åkrarna tills de fyllde dem. De fyllde också igen brunnarna och fällde alla värdefulla träd. Till slut var det bara Kir-Hareset kvar med sina stenar, men också den staden föll när slungkastarna gick till anfall.
26När kungen i Moab såg att han förlorat slaget, anförde han 700 av sina svärdbeväpnade män i ett försök att slå sig igenom till kungen i Edom, men de misslyckades. 27Då hämtade han sin äldste son, som skulle efterträda honom som kung, och offrade honom som ett brännoffer på muren. Israeliterna drabbades av stor vrede och drog sig tillbaka till sitt eget land.
Moab revolts
1Joram3:1 Hebrew Jehoram, a variant of Joram; also in verse 6 son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned for twelve years. 2He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone of Baal that his father had made. 3Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4Now Mesha king of Moab raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilised all Israel. 7He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: ‘The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?’
‘I will go with you,’ he replied. ‘I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.’
8‘By what route shall we attack?’ he asked.
‘Through the Desert of Edom,’ he answered.
9So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom. After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10‘What!’ exclaimed the king of Israel. ‘Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?’
11But Jehoshaphat asked, ‘Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may enquire of the Lord?’
An officer of the king of Israel answered, ‘Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.3:11 That is, he was Elijah’s personal servant.’
12Jehoshaphat said, ‘The word of the Lord is with him.’ So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13Elisha said to the king of Israel, ‘Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.’
‘No,’ the king of Israel answered, ‘because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.’
14Elisha said, ‘As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15But now bring me a harpist.’
While the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came on Elisha 16and he said, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17For this is what the Lord says: you will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, block up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.’
20The next morning, about the time for offering the sacrifice, there it was – water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.
21Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red – like blood. 23‘That’s blood!’ they said. ‘Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!’
24But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.
