Iefta
1Iefta, ghiladitul, era un războinic viteaz. El era fiul unei prostituate. Iefta i se născuse lui Ghilad. 2Soția lui Ghilad îi născuse și ea fii. Când fiii soției lui au crescut mari, l‑au alungat pe Iefta și i‑au zis: „Tu nu vei avea moștenire în casa tatălui nostru pentru că ești fiul unei alte femei!“ 3Iefta a fugit dinaintea fraților săi și a locuit în țara Tob. Acolo, niște bărbați de nimic3 Vezi nota de la 9:4. s‑au adunat pe lângă Iefta și l‑au însoțit.
4După câteva zile, fiii lui Amon au luptat împotriva lui Israel. 5În timp ce fiii lui Amon se luptau cu Israel, bătrânii5 Vezi nota de la 8:14 [peste tot în capitol]. Ghiladului s‑au dus să‑l aducă pe Iefta din regatul Tob.
6Ei i‑au zis lui Iefta:
– Vino să ne fii conducător, ca să ne luptăm cu fiii lui Amon.
7Dar Iefta le‑a zis bătrânilor Ghiladului:
– Oare nu voi sunteți aceia care m‑ați urât și m‑ați alungat din familia tatălui meu? De ce ați venit la mine acum când sunteți în pericol?
8Bătrânii Ghiladului i‑au răspuns lui Iefta:
– Ne întoarcem la tine pentru că am dori să vii cu noi și să lupți împotriva fiilor lui Amon. După aceea, tu vei fi căpetenia noastră, a tuturor locuitorilor Ghiladului!
9Iefta le‑a zis bătrânilor Ghiladului:
– Dacă mă aduceți înapoi ca să lupt împotriva fiilor lui Amon, și Domnul îi dă în mâna mea, voi deveni eu căpetenia voastră?
10Bătrânii Ghiladului i‑au răspuns lui Iefta:
– Domnul să fie martor între noi, dacă nu vom face întocmai cum ai zis!
11Iefta a plecat cu bătrânii Ghiladului, iar poporul l‑a pus în fruntea lui drept căpetenie și conducător. Apoi Iefta a rostit din nou aceste cuvinte, înaintea Domnului, la Mițpa.
Iefta îi învinge pe amoniți
12După aceea, Iefta a trimis niște mesageri la regele fiilor lui Amon ca să‑i spună:
– Ce ai cu mine, de ai venit să lupți împotriva țării mele?
13Regele fiilor lui Amon le‑a răspuns mesagerilor lui Iefta:
– Pentru că atunci când s‑a suit din Egipt, Israel mi‑a luat țara, de la Arnon până la Iabok și până la Iordan. Acum, înapoiază‑mi‑o pe cale pașnică!
14Iefta a trimis din nou mesageri regelui fiilor lui Amon 15ca să‑i spună:
– Așa vorbește Iefta: „Nu Israel a luat țara Moabului și țara fiilor lui Amon 16pentru că, atunci când s‑a suit din Egipt, Israel a mers prin pustie până la Marea Roșie16 Ebr.: Yam Suf (lit.: Marea Trestiilor sau Marea Algelor– vezi Iona 2:5, unde același termen ebraic, suf, are sensul de alge). Denumirea de Marea Roșie a fost introdusă în traducerile moderne prin LXX și Vulgata. În VT însă, sintagma ebraică denumea actualul Golf Aqaba, la sud de Elat. Chiar și astăzi localnicii numesc Golful Aqaba Yam Suf. Vezi 1 Regi 9:26. și apoi și‑a continuat drumul până la Kadeș. 17Israel a trimis atunci mesageri regelui Edomului, zicând: «Lasă‑mă, te rog, să trec prin țara ta!» Dar regele Edomului nu i‑a îngăduit. A mai trimis mesageri și regelui Moabului, dar nici acesta nu a acceptat. Astfel, Israel a rămas la Kadeș.
18Apoi au călătorit prin pustie, au înconjurat țara Edomului și țara Moabului, au ajuns în partea de răsărit și și‑au așezat tabăra dincoace de Arnon. Deci n‑au intrat în teritoriul Moabului, întrucât Arnon era hotarul Moabului.
19Atunci Israel a trimis mesageri lui Sihon, regele amoriților, rege al Heșbonului. Israel i‑a zis: «Lasă‑ne, te rugăm, să trecem prin țara ta ca să ajungem la locul nostru!» 20Dar Sihon n‑a avut încredere în Israel ca să‑l lase să îi traverseze teritoriul, ci și‑a adunat poporul, și‑a așezat tabăra la Iahaț și s‑a luptat cu Israel.
21Însă Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, l‑a dat pe Sihon și pe toți oamenii săi în mâna lui Israel. Ei i‑au învins și astfel Israel a luat în stăpânire tot teritoriul amoriților care locuiau în această țară. 22Ei au moștenit tot teritoriul amoriților de la Arnon până la Iabok și din pustie până la Iordan.
23Acum, după ce Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, i‑a alungat pe amoriți dinaintea poporului Său Israel, tu să‑i iei în stăpânire teritoriul? 24Oare nu vei moșteni tu ceea ce îți dă în stăpânire zeul tău Chemoș24 Zeul suprem la moabiți. Fie în acea vreme regele amonit stăpânea și Moabul, fie exista o alianță militară între cele două state.? Deci și noi vom lua în stăpânire pe toți cei alungați de Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, dinaintea noastră! 25Crezi că ești mai puternic decât Balak, fiul lui Țipor, regele Moabului? S‑a certat el oare vreodată cu Israel sau s‑a luptat el împotriva lui? 26Israel locuiește de trei sute de ani în Heșbon și în satele dimprejurul lui, în Aroer și în satele dimprejurul lui și în toate cetățile care sunt pe malurile Arnonului. De ce nu le‑ați luat înapoi în tot acest timp? 27Eu nu ți‑am greșit cu nimic, iar tu îmi faci rău luptându‑te cu mine. Domnul să judece astăzi! El să fie Judecător între fiii lui Israel și fiii lui Amon!“
28Regele fiilor lui Amon n‑a luat în seamă mesajul pe care i l‑a trimis Iefta.
29Atunci Duhul Domnului a venit peste Iefta. El a străbătut Ghiladul și Manase, a trecut prin Mițpa Ghiladului și din Mițpa Ghiladului a înaintat împotriva fiilor lui Amon. 30Iefta a făcut un jurământ Domnului, zicând: „Dacă îi vei da în mâna mea pe fiii lui Amon, 31atunci ceea ce va ieși pe porțile casei mele, când mă voi întoarce în pace de la fiii lui Amon, va fi al Domnului și îl voi aduce ca ardere‑de‑tot!“
32Iefta a traversat spre fiii lui Amon ca să lupte împotriva lor și Domnul i‑a dat în mâna lui. 33El i‑a lovit de la Aroer până la intrarea în Minit, douăzeci de cetăți, provocând o mare înfrângere până la Abel-Cheramim. Astfel, fiii lui Amon au fost supuși înaintea fiilor lui Israel.
34Iefta s‑a întors acasă, la Mițpa. Și iată că fiica sa i‑a ieșit în întâmpinare cu tamburine și dansuri. Ea era singurul lui copil. Nu mai avea niciun alt fiu sau fiică.
35Când a văzut‑o, și‑a sfâșiat hainele și a zis:
– Vai, fiica mea! Mă îndurerezi atât de tare! Ai ajuns asemenea celor ce mă tulbură. Mi‑am deschis gura înaintea Domnului și nu pot să‑mi retrag jurământul!
36Ea i‑a răspuns:
– Tată, dacă ți‑ai deschis gura înaintea Domnului, fă‑mi potrivit cu ceea ce ți‑a ieșit din gură, mai ales acum când Domnul te‑a răzbunat pe fiii lui Amon, dușmanii tăi.
37Apoi i‑a zis tatălui său:
– Fă‑mi însă favoarea aceasta! Lasă‑mă singură două luni, ca să mă duc, să cobor înspre munți și să‑mi plâng fecioria împreună cu prietenele mele!
38El a răspuns:
– Du‑te!
Și a lăsat‑o singură două luni. Ea s‑a dus cu prietenele ei și și‑a plâns fecioria în munți. 39La sfârșitul celor două luni, s‑a întors la tatăl ei, și el i‑a făcut potrivit cu jurământul pe care l‑a rostit. Ea fusese fecioară. De atunci s‑a statornicit în Israel obiceiul 40ca în fiecare an, fiicele lui Israel s‑o jelească pe fiica ghiladitului Iefta timp de patru zile.
1Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. 2Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. ‘You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,’ they said, ‘because you are the son of another woman.’ 3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.
4Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, 5the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6‘Come,’ they said, ‘be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.’
7Jephthah said to them, ‘Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?’
8The elders of Gilead said to him, ‘Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.’
9Jephthah answered, ‘Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me – will I really be your head?’
10The elders of Gilead replied, ‘The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.’ 11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: ‘What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?’
13The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, ‘When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.’
14Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, 15saying:
‘This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites. 16But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea11:16 Or the Sea of Reeds and on to Kadesh. 17Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Give us permission to go through your country,” but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18‘Next they travelled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
19‘Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, “Let us pass through your country to our own place.” 20Sihon, however, did not trust Israel11:20 Or however, would not make an agreement for Israel to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
21‘Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, 22capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.
23‘Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess. 25Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them? 26For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? 27I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.’
28The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. 30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.’
32Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
34When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.’
36‘My father,’ she replied, ‘you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. 37But grant me this one request,’ she said. ‘Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.’
38‘You may go,’ he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
