1Atunci Iosif s‑a aruncat pe fața tatălui său, a plâns și i‑a dat sărutare. 2Apoi Iosif le‑a poruncit slujitorilor săi doctori să‑l îmbălsămeze pe tatăl său, și doctorii l‑au îmbălsămat pe Israel. 3După ce s‑au împlinit patruzeci de zile – căci acesta era timpul necesar pentru îmbălsămare – egiptenii l‑au jelit șaptezeci de zile. 4După ce au trecut zilele de jale, Iosif le‑a vorbit celor de la curtea lui Faraon, zicând: „Dacă am găsit bunăvoință înaintea voastră4 Lit.: în ochii voștri., vă rog să‑i vorbiți lui Faraon astfel: 5«Tatăl meu m‑a pus să jur, zicând: ‘Iată, eu sunt pe moarte. De aceea dă‑mi voie, te rog, să mă sui acolo ca să‑l înmormântez pe tatăl meu, iar apoi mă voi întoarce.»“ 6Faraon a zis: „Suie‑te și înmormântează‑l pe tatăl tău, așa cum te‑a pus să juri.“
7Iosif s‑a suit să‑și înmormânteze tatăl și împreună cu el s‑au suit toți slujitorii lui Faraon, bătrânii palatului lui și toți bătrânii țării Egiptului, 8toată familia lui Iosif, frații săi și familia tatălui său. Au lăsat în ținutul Goșen doar copiii, turmele și cirezile lor. 9Împreună cu el s‑au suit care și călăreți, astfel încât convoiul era foarte mare. 10Când au ajuns la Aria lui Atad10 Sau: Aria Spinului; teren stâncos sau acoperit cu lut, aflat la marginea satului sau orașului, într‑o zonă expusă la vânt, unde localnicii își treierau grânele., care se află dincolo de Iordan, au jelit acolo mult și amarnic. 12Astfel, fiii lui Iacov au făcut pentru el așa cum le‑a poruncit acesta. 13Fiii săi l‑au dus în țara Canaan și l‑au înmormântat în peștera din ogorul Mahpela, la răsărit de Mamre, pe care Avraam a cumpărat‑o de la hititul Efron, împreună cu ogorul, ca teren pentru înmormântare. 14După ce l‑a înmormântat pe tatăl său, Iosif s‑a întors în Egipt, împreună cu frații săi și cu toți cei ce se suiseră cu el ca să‑și înmormânteze tatăl.
Bunătatea lui Iosif față de frații săi
15Când frații lui Iosif au văzut că tatăl lor murise, au zis: „Dacă cumva Iosif ne va dușmăni și ne va întoarce pe deplin tot răul pe care i l‑am făcut?“ 16De aceea au trimis să‑i spună lui Iosif: „Tatăl tău a poruncit înainte de moarte, zicând: 17«Așa să‑i spuneți lui Iosif: ‘Oh, iartă, te rog, fărădelegea fraților tăi și păcatul lor, căci ți‑au făcut rău!’» Acum, iartă, te rugăm, fărădelegea robilor Dumnezeului tatălui tău!“ Iosif a plâns când i‑au spus aceste cuvinte.
18Frații lui au venit, s‑au plecat înaintea lui și au zis:
– Iată, suntem robii tăi.
19Iosif le‑a răspuns:
– Nu vă temeți, căci sunt eu oare în locul lui Dumnezeu? 20Voi ați plănuit împotriva mea ce este rău, dar Dumnezeu a plănuit aceasta spre bine, ca să țină în viață un popor numeros, așa cum face astăzi. 21Așadar, să nu vă temeți! Eu însumi vă voi asigura hrana, vouă și copiilor voștri.
Apoi i‑a mângâiat și le‑a vorbit pe placul inimii lor.
Moartea lui Iosif
22Iosif a locuit în Egipt împreună cu familia tatălui său. El a trăit o sută zece ani. 23Iosif i‑a văzut pe copiii lui Efraim până la a treia generație, iar copiii lui Machir, fiul lui Manase, au fost născuți pe genunchii săi23 Vezi 30:3; 48:12. 1Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. 2Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. 4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5‘My father made me swear an oath and said, “I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’ ”
6Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”
7So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt— 8besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen. 9Chariots and horsemen50:9 Or charioteers also went up with him. It was a very large company.
10When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father. 11When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.50:11 Abel Mizraim means mourning of the Egyptians.
12So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them: 13They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 14After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.
Joseph Reassures His Brothers
15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died: 17‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.
18His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.
19But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.
The Death of Joseph
22Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years 23and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.50:23 That is, were counted as his
24Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” 25And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”
26So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
