Iacov obține binecuvântarea prin înșelăciune
1Când Isaac a îmbătrânit și i‑au slăbit ochii, nemaiputând să vadă, l‑a chemat pe Esau, fiul său cel mare, și i‑a zis:
– Fiule!
El i‑a răspuns:
– Iată‑mă!
2Isaac i‑a zis:
– Iată, eu sunt bătrân și nu știu ziua morții mele. 3Te rog, ia‑ți acum armele – tolba cu săgeți și arcul – ieși la câmp și adu‑mi vânat. 4Apoi pregătește‑mi o mâncare gustoasă, așa cum îmi place mie și adu‑mi‑o să mănânc, ca să te binecuvânteze sufletul meu înainte de a muri.
5Rebeca a auzit ceea ce Isaac i‑a spus fiului său Esau.
Când Esau a plecat la câmp ca să prindă vânat și să‑l aducă, 6Rebeca i‑a zis fiului său Iacov:
– Iată, l‑am auzit pe tatăl tău vorbind cu fratele tău, Esau, și zicând: 7„Adu‑mi niște vânat și pregătește‑mi o mâncare gustoasă ca să mănânc și să te binecuvântez în prezența Domnului, înainte de moartea mea.“ 8De aceea, fiule, ascultă‑mă și fă ce‑ți poruncesc! 9Du‑te la turmă și ia‑mi de acolo doi iezi buni, ca să fac din ei tatălui tău o mâncare gustoasă, așa cum îi place lui. 10Apoi o vei aduce tatălui tău ca s‑o mănânce, pentru ca el să te binecuvânteze înainte de moartea lui.
11Dar Iacov i‑a răspuns mamei sale, Rebeca:
– Iată că fratele meu, Esau, este păros, iar eu am pielea netedă. 12Dacă tatăl meu mă va pipăi, mă va considera un înșelător și voi atrage asupra mea blestemul în locul binecuvântării.
13Mama sa i‑a zis:
– Asupra mea să cadă blestemul tău, fiule! Numai ascultă‑mi glasul! Du‑te și adu‑mi iezii.
14El s‑a dus, i‑a luat și i‑a adus mamei sale, iar mama sa a pregătit o mâncare gustoasă, așa cum îi plăcea tatălui său. 15După aceea, Rebeca a luat cele mai bune haine ale fiului său cel mare, Esau, pe care le avea acasă, și l‑a îmbrăcat cu ele pe Iacov, fiul său cel mic. 16Ea a pus pieile iezilor pe mâinile lui și pe partea netedă a gâtului său. 17Apoi a dat în mâna lui Iacov, fiul său, mâncarea gustoasă și pâinea pe care le pregătise.
18El a venit la tatăl său și a zis:
– Tată!
El a zis:
– Iată‑mă! Care ești, fiule?
19Iacov i‑a zis tatălui său:
– Sunt Esau, întâiul tău născut. Am făcut așa cum mi‑ai spus. Te rog, ridică‑te și vino să mănânci din vânatul meu, ca astfel sufletul tău să mă binecuvânteze.
20Isaac i‑a zis fiului său:
– Cum de l‑ai găsit așa de repede, fiule?
El a răspuns:
– Pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, mi l‑a scos în cale.
21Atunci Isaac i‑a zis lui Iacov:
– Te rog, apropie‑te ca să te simt, fiule! Ești tu oare fiul meu Esau, sau nu?
22Iacov s‑a apropiat de tatăl său, Isaac, care l‑a atins și a zis: „Vocea este a lui Iacov, dar mâinile sunt ale lui Esau.“ 23Nu l‑a recunoscut, pentru că mâinile lui erau păroase la fel ca și mâinile fratelui său, Esau; așa că l‑a binecuvântat.
24Isaac l‑a întrebat:
– Ești tu într-adevăr fiul meu Esau?
Iacov a răspuns:
– Da, eu sunt!
25Atunci Isaac a zis:
– Adu‑mi să mănânc din vânatul fiului meu, pentru ca astfel sufletul meu să te binecuvânteze.
Iacov i‑a adus mâncarea, iar Isaac a mâncat. I‑a adus și vin și a băut.
26Apoi tatăl său, Isaac, i‑a zis:
– Te rog, apropie‑te și dă‑mi sărutare, fiule!
27El s‑a apropiat și i‑a dat sărutare. Isaac a simțit mirosul hainelor lui și l‑a binecuvântat, zicând:
„Iată, mirosul fiului meu este ca mirosul câmpului
pe care Domnul l‑a binecuvântat.
28Dumnezeu să‑ți dea din roua cerului
și din grăsimea pământului;
să‑ți dea grâne și must din belșug.
29Popoare să‑ți slujească
și neamuri să se plece înaintea ta.
Stăpânește peste frații tăi,
și fiii mamei tale să se plece înaintea ta.
Blestemați să fie cei care te vor blestema
și binecuvântați să fie cei care te vor binecuvânta!“
30Isaac tocmai terminase să‑l binecuvânteze pe Iacov, când, imediat după ce Iacov a ieșit dinaintea tatălui său Isaac, s‑a întors de la vânătoare Esau, fratele său.
31A pregătit și el o mâncare gustoasă și i‑a adus‑o tatălui său.
El i‑a zis tatălui său:
– Să se ridice tatăl meu și să mănânce din vânatul fiului său, pentru ca astfel sufletul tău să mă binecuvânteze.
32Tatăl său, Isaac, l‑a întrebat:
– Tu cine ești?
El a răspuns:
– Sunt fiul tău cel întâi născut, Esau!
33Atunci Isaac s‑a cutremurat foarte tare și a zis:
– Atunci cine a fost cel care a prins vânat și mi l‑a adus? Am mâncat din toate, înainte să vii tu, și l‑am binecuvântat. Cu siguranță, el va fi binecuvântat.
34Când a auzit cuvintele tatălui său, Esau a scos un strigăt puternic, plin de amărăciune, și i‑a zis tatălui său:
– Binecuvântează‑mă și pe mine, tată!
35El i‑a răspuns:
– Fratele tău a venit cu înșelătorie și ți‑a luat binecuvântarea.
36Esau a zis:
– Nu pe bună dreptate se numește el Iacov36 Ya’aqob înseamnă cel care ține de călcâi (în sens figurat: înșelător). Vezi nota de la 25:26.? M‑a înșelat de două ori: mi‑a luat dreptul de întâi născut și iată că acum mi‑a luat și binecuvântarea.
Apoi a zis:
– N‑ai păstrat nicio binecuvântare pentru mine?
37Isaac i‑a răspuns lui Esau și i‑a zis:
– Iată, l‑am pus stăpân peste tine, i‑am dat lui ca robi pe toți frații37 În acest context, cuvântul frați face referire la cei de același neam sau membri ai aceluiași popor. săi și i‑am oferit grâne și must. Prin urmare, ce mai pot face pentru tine, fiule?
38Esau i‑a zis tatălui său:
– Numai o binecuvântare ai, tată? Binecuvântează‑mă și pe mine, tată!
Apoi Esau și‑a ridicat glasul și a plâns.
39Tatăl său, Isaac, a răspuns și i‑a zis:
– Iată, locuința ta va fi departe de grăsimea pământului
și de roua cerului de sus.
40Vei trăi din sabia ta
și‑i vei sluji fratelui tău;
dar când te vei răscula40 Sensul textului ebraic este nesigur.,
îi vei zdrobi jugul de pe gâtul tău.
Fuga lui Iacov la Laban
41Esau l‑a urât pe Iacov din cauza binecuvântării pe care i‑a dat‑o tatăl său și zicea în inima sa: „Zilele de bocet pentru tatăl meu se apropie. Apoi îl voi ucide pe fratele meu, Iacov.“
42Când i s‑a spus Rebecăi despre planurile lui Esau, fiul ei cel mare, a trimis după Iacov, fiul cel mic, și i‑a zis: „Iată, fratele tău, Esau, se împacă cu gândul că te va ucide. 43De aceea, fiule, ascultă‑mă! Ridică‑te, fugi la fratele meu, Laban, în Haran, 44și stai la el pentru câteva zile, până se va potoli mânia fratelui tău, 45până se va potoli furia lui față de tine și va uita ce i‑ai făcut. Apoi voi trimite după tine și te voi lua de acolo. De ce să vă pierd pe amândoi în aceeași zi?“
46După aceea, Rebeca i‑a zis lui Isaac: „M‑am scârbit de viață din cauza acestor fiice a lui Het. Dacă Iacov își va lua o soție ca acestea dintre fiicele lui Het, dintre fiicele țării, la ce‑mi mai este bună viața?“
1When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”
“Here I am,” he answered.
2Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death. 3Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me. 4Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”
5Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back, 6Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’ 8Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you: 9Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it. 10Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.”
11Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man while I have smooth skin. 12What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing.”
13His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go and get them for me.”
14So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it. 15Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. 17Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.
18He went to his father and said, “My father.”
“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”
19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”
20Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”
“The Lord your God gave me success,” he replied.
21Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”
22Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him. 24“Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.
“I am,” he replied.
25Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”
Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
27So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,
“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.
28May God give you heaven’s dew
and earth’s richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.
29May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.”
30After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”
32His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”
“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.”
33Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!”
34When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me—me too, my father!”
35But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”
36Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob27:36 Jacob means he grasps the heel, a Hebrew idiom for he takes advantage of or he deceives.? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing!” Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”
37Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”
38Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.
39His father Isaac answered him,
“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew of heaven above.
40You will live by the sword
and you will serve your brother.
But when you grow restless,
you will throw his yoke
from off your neck.”
41Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you. 43Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Harran. 44Stay with him for a while until your brother’s fury subsides. 45When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I’ll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”
