Israel – un popor răzvrătit
1Ascultă, Israel! Astăzi vei traversa Iordanul ca să iei în stăpânire neamuri mai mari și mai puternice decât tine, cu cetăți mari și fortificate până la cer, 2cum sunt anachiții2 Vezi nota de la 1:28., un popor puternic și de statură înaltă, pe care îi cunoști și despre care ai auzit zicându‑se: «Cine poate sta împotriva anachiților?» 3Dar să știi astăzi că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, va traversa El Însuși înaintea ta, ca un foc mistuitor. El îi va distruge și‑i va smeri înaintea ta, iar tu îi vei alunga și îi vei nimici repede, așa cum ți‑a promis Domnul.
4După ce Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, îi va alunga dinaintea ta, să nu zici în inima ta: «Datorită dreptății mele m‑a adus Domnul să stăpânesc țara aceasta!» Căci din cauza răutății acestor neamuri, le va alunga Domnul dinaintea ta. 5Nu datorită dreptății sau curăției inimii tale vei intra în stăpânirea țării lor, ci din cauza răutății acestor neamuri Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, le va alunga dinaintea ta, și ca să se împlinească astfel cuvântul pe care Domnul l‑a jurat părinților tăi, Avraam, Isaac și Iacov. 6Să știi deci că nu datorită dreptății tale Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, îți dă în stăpânire această țară bună, căci tu ești un popor cu ceafa tare.
7Adu‑ți aminte și nu uita cum L‑ai provocat la mânie pe Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, în pustie. Ați fost răzvrătiți împotriva Domnului din ziua în care ați ieșit din țara Egiptului, până la sosirea voastră în locul acesta. 8La Horeb, l‑ați provocat pe Domnul la mânie, iar Domnul a fost atât de mânios pe voi încât să vă nimicească. 9Când m‑am urcat pe munte ca să iau tablele de piatră, tablele Legământului pe care Domnul l‑a încheiat cu voi, am rămas pe munte timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți fără să mănânc pâine și fără să beau apă. 10Domnul mi‑a dat cele două table de piatră scrise cu degetul lui Dumnezeu. Pe ele erau toate poruncile pe care vi le‑a spus pe munte, din mijlocul focului, în ziua adunării.
Vițelul de aur
(Ex. 32:1-35)
11La sfârșitul celor patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți Domnul mi‑a dat cele două table de piatră, tablele Legământului. 12Domnul mi‑a zis: «Ridică‑te și coboară repede din acest loc, fiindcă poporul tău, pe care l‑ai scos din Egipt, s‑a pervertit. Repede s‑a mai abătut de la calea pe care i‑am poruncit‑o, turnându‑și un idol!» 13Domnul mi‑a vorbit, zicând: «M‑am uitat la poporul acesta și iată că este un popor cu ceafa tare. 14Lasă‑Mă să‑i nimicesc și să le șterg numele de sub ceruri, iar din tine o să fac un neam mai puternic și mai mare decât ei.»
15Eu m‑am întors și am coborât de pe munte. Muntele ardea în foc, iar cele două table ale Legământului erau în amândouă mâinile mele. 16M‑am uitat și iată că păcătuiserăți împotriva Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, făcându‑vă un vițel turnat. Repede v‑ați mai abătut de la calea pe care v‑o poruncise Domnul! 17Atunci am luat cele două table și le‑am aruncat din mâinile mele, sfărâmându‑le sub privirile voastre.
18M‑am aruncat cu fața la pământ înaintea Domnului, ca mai înainte, timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți. Nu am mâncat pâine și nu am băut apă, din cauza tuturor păcatelor pe care le‑ați săvârșit, făcând ce este rău în ochii Domnului, ca să‑L provocați la mânie. 19La vederea mâniei și furiei Domnului m‑am înspăimântat, căci era plin de‑o așa mânie împotriva voastră, fiind gata să vă nimicească. Dar Domnul m‑a ascultat și de data aceasta. 20De asemenea, Domnul a fost atât de mânios pe Aaron, încât a dorit să‑l nimicească, dar m‑am rugat atunci și pentru el. 21Am luat vițelul, păcatul pe care‑l făcuserăți, și l‑am ars în foc. L‑am sfărâmat, măcinându‑l bine până s‑a făcut praf, și am aruncat praful în pârâul care curgea din munte.
22Apoi, la Tabera, la Masa și la Chibrot-Hataava ați provocat iarăși mânia Domnului.
23Iar când Domnul v‑a trimis de la Kadeș-Barnea, zicând: «Suiți‑vă și luați în stăpânire țara pe care v‑am dat‑o!», v‑ați împotrivit poruncii Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru. Nu L‑ați crezut și n‑ați ascultat de glasul Lui. 24V‑ați împotrivit Domnului din ziua în care v‑am cunoscut.
25M‑am aruncat cu fața la pământ înaintea Domnului timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți, pentru că Domnul Își propusese să vă nimicească. 26M‑am rugat Domnului și I‑am zis:
«Stăpâne Doamne, nu distruge poporul Tău, moștenirea Ta, pe care ai răscumpărat‑o cu puterea Ta cea mare și ai scos‑o din Egipt cu mână puternică. 27Adu‑Ți aminte de robii Tăi, Avraam, Isaac și Iacov. Nu privi la încăpățânarea acestui popor, nici la răutatea și la păcatul lui, 28ca nu cumva țara din care ne‑ai scos să spună: ‘Pentru că Domnul nu avea putere să‑i ducă în țara pe care le‑a promis‑o și pentru că îi ura, de aceea i‑a scos din Egipt, ca să‑i omoare în pustie.’ 29Totuși, ei sunt poporul Tău, moștenirea Ta, pe care ai izbăvit‑o cu puterea Ta cea mare și cu brațul Tău întins.»
Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness
1Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. 2The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?” 3But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.
4After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 6Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
The Golden Calf
7Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. 9When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. 10The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.
11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. 12Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”
13And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 16When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.
18Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me. 20And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.
22You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.
23And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, “Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust him or obey him. 24You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.
25I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights because the Lord had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’ 29But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.”
