1Iehoșafat, regele lui Iuda, s‑a întors în pace acasă, la Ierusalim. 2Dar Iehu, fiul văzătorului Hanani, i‑a ieșit înainte și i‑a zis regelui Iehoșafat: „Tu ajuți pe cel nelegiuit și iubești pe2 Sau: închei alianță cu. cel ce Îl urăște pe Domnul? Din această cauză mânia Domnului este împotriva ta! 3Totuși, au fost găsite și lucruri bune în tine, căci ai îndepărtat așerele3 Vezi nota de la 17:6. din țară și te‑ai hotărât în inima ta să‑L cauți pe Dumnezeu.“
Reformele inițiate de Iehoșafat
4Iehoșafat a continuat să locuiască la Ierusalim. Apoi a mai ieșit o dată în mijlocul poporului, străbătând țara de la Beer-Șeba până la muntele lui Efraim și aducându‑i înapoi la Domnul, Dumnezeul părinților lor. 5Iehoșafat a rânduit judecători în țară, în toate cetățile fortificate ale lui Iuda, în fiecare cetate. 6El le‑a zis judecătorilor: „Aveți grijă ce faceți, căci nu judecați pentru un om, ci pentru Domnul, Care este cu voi când rostiți sentința! 7Și acum, groaza Domnului să fie peste voi! Vegheați și faceți ce trebuie, căci la Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, nu există nedreptate, părtinire sau luare de mită!“
8De asemenea, Iehoșafat a rânduit și la Ierusalim pe unii dintre leviți, dintre preoți și dintre căpeteniile de familii din Israel ca să se ocupe de judecata Domnului și de neînțelegeri; aceștia s‑au stabilit la Ierusalim. 9El le‑a poruncit, zicând: „Să lucrați în teamă de Domnul, cu credincioșie și din toată inima! 10În orice neînțelegere care ajunge la voi de la frații voștri, care locuiesc în cetățile lor, neînțelegere cu privire la vreun omor sau cu privire la vreo lege, vreo poruncă, vreo hotărâre sau vreo judecată, voi să‑i învățați, ca astfel să nu se facă vinovați față de Domnul, și mânia Lui să nu izbucnească peste voi și peste frații voștri. Faceți așa și nu veți fi vinovați! 11Iată, preotul Amaria este căpetenia voastră pentru toate treburile Domnului, iar Zebadia, fiul lui Ismael, este conducătorul Casei lui Iuda pentru toate treburile regelui. Totodată, leviții vor sluji înaintea voastră ca supraveghetori. Întăriți‑vă și lucrați, iar Domnul să fie cu cel bun!“
1When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2Jehu the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, ‘Should you help the wicked and love19:2 Or and make alliances with those who hate the Lord? Because of this, the wrath of the Lord is on you. 3There is, however, some good in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles and have set your heart on seeking God.’
Jehoshaphat appoints judges
4Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 5He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. 6He told them, ‘Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.’
8In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites, priests and heads of Israelite families to administer the law of the Lord and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem. 9He gave them these orders: ‘You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord. 10In every case that comes before you from your people who live in the cities – whether bloodshed or other concerns of the law, commands, decrees or regulations – you are to warn them not to sin against the Lord; otherwise his wrath will come on you and your people. Do this, and you will not sin.
11‘Amariah the chief priest will be over you in any matter concerning the Lord, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in any matter concerning the king, and the Levites will serve as officials before you. Act with courage, and may the Lord be with those who do well.’
