Lucrarea și autoritatea lui Pavel
1Eu însumi, Pavel, vă îndemn, prin blândețea și bunătatea lui Cristos – eu, care sunt umil când sunt prezent între voi, dar plin de curaj împotriva voastră când sunt departe – 2deci, vă rog fierbinte ca, atunci când voi fi prezent, să nu mă faceți să‑mi arăt curajul cu acea încredere pe care cred că voi îndrăzni s‑o arăt față de unii care cred că noi umblăm potrivit firii! 3Fiindcă noi, deși umblăm în fire, nu ne luptăm potrivit firii. 4Căci armele luptei noastre nu sunt firești, ci sunt făcute puternice de Dumnezeu pentru a dărâma fortărețe. Noi dărâmăm argumentele 5și orice înălțime care se ridică împotriva cunoașterii lui Dumnezeu și luăm captiv orice gând ca să asculte de Cristos. 6Și suntem gata să pedepsim orice neascultare, atunci când ascultarea voastră va fi deplină.
7Voi vă uitați la înfățișare.7 Sau: Voi vă uitați numai la ceea ce se vede; sau: Uitați‑vă la ceea ce este în fața voastră. Dacă cineva este convins că este al lui Cristos, el însuși să se gândească din nou că, așa cum el este al lui Cristos, tot astfel suntem și noi. 8Căci, chiar dacă mă laud ceva mai mult cu autoritatea noastră, pe care Domnul ne‑a dat‑o pentru zidirea și nu pentru dărâmarea voastră, tot nu‑mi va fi rușine, 9ca să nu par ca și cum v‑aș înspăimânta prin scrisorile mele. 10Căci el spune: „Scrisorile lui sunt cu greutate și puternice, dar când vine el însuși,10 Lit.: dar prezența trupului este slabă. este slab și cuvântul lui este disprețuit.“ 11Un astfel de om să se gândească la faptul că, așa cum suntem în cuvânt prin scrisori, când suntem departe, la fel suntem și în faptă, când suntem prezenți.
12Căci noi nu îndrăznim să ne numărăm printre unii sau să ne comparăm pe noi înșine cu unii care se recomandă pe ei înșiși, însă, când ei se măsoară pe ei înșiși prin ei înșiși și se compară pe ei înșiși cu ei înșiși, nu sunt înțelepți. 13Noi însă nu ne vom lăuda dincolo de limite, ci potrivit cu limita ariei de lucru pe care ne‑a împărțit‑o Dumnezeu de a ajunge chiar și până la voi. 14Căci nu ne întindem prea mult, ca și cum n‑am fi ajuns până la voi, fiindcă noi am și ajuns până la voi cu Evanghelia lui Cristos. 15Nu ne lăudăm dincolo de limite, adică cu ostenelile altora, dar avem speranță că, în timp ce credința voastră crește, lucrarea noastră va fi lărgită din belșug printre voi potrivit cu aria noastră de lucru, 16ca să putem vesti Evanghelia în țările de dincolo de voi, fără să ne lăudăm cu lucrări făcute deja în aria de lucru a altuia. 17Însă „Cel ce se laudă să se laude în Domnul.“17 Vezi Ier. 9:24. 18Fiindcă nu cel ce se recomandă pe sine este aprobat, ci cel pe care Domnul îl recomandă.
1Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: 2But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. 8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: 9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. 10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. 11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. 12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. 14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: 15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, 16To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand. 17But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 18For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
