2În acest timp, Saul se afla la marginea cetății Ghiva, sub rodiul din Migron, iar cei care se aflau cu el erau în număr de aproape șase sute de bărbați. 3Se afla acolo și Ahia, care purta un efod. El era fiul lui Ahitub și fratele lui I‑Kabod, fiul lui Fineas, nepotul lui Eli, preotul Domnului de la Șilo. Poporul nu știa însă că Ionatan plecase.
4Între trecătorile prin care căuta Ionatan să treacă la garnizoana filistenilor se afla un colț de stâncă de o parte și un colț de stâncă de cealaltă parte. Numele unuia era Boțeț, iar al celuilalt era Seneh. 5Unul dintre ele se afla în partea de nord, spre Micmaș, iar celălalt în partea de sud, spre Gheva.
6Ionatan i‑a zis tânărului care‑i ducea armele:
– Vino să pătrundem până la garnizoana acestor necircumciși! Poate că Domnul va lucra pentru noi, căci nimic nu‑L împiedică pe Domnul să izbăvească fie prin mulți, fie prin puțini.
7Cel ce‑i ducea armele i‑a răspuns:
– Fă tot ceea ce ai pe inimă. Iată că sunt alături de tine în ceea ce ai de gând să faci.
8Ionatan a zis:
– Ne vom îndrepta spre bărbații aceia și ne vom arăta lor. 9Dacă ne vor zice: „Așteptați până vom ajunge noi la voi!“, atunci vom rămâne acolo unde suntem și nu vom urca la ei. 10Dar dacă ne vor zice: „Suiți‑vă la noi!“, atunci ne vom sui, fiindcă Domnul îi dă în mâinile noastre. Acesta să ne fie semnul.
11Așadar, s‑au arătat amândoi garnizoanei filistene, iar filistenii au zis: „Iată! Evreii ies din vizuinile în care s‑au ascuns!“ 12Bărbații din garnizoană au strigat către Ionatan și către cel ce‑i ducea armele, zicând: „Suiți‑vă la noi ca să vă arătăm ceva!12 Sau: Suiți‑vă la noi și vă vom arăta noi!“ Atunci Ionatan i‑a spus celui ce‑i ducea armele: „Urcă‑te după mine pentru că Domnul i‑a dat în mâna lui Israel.“
13Ionatan s‑a cățărat, folosindu‑se de mâini și de picioare, iar cel ce‑i ducea armele îl urma. Filistenii cădeau înaintea lui Ionatan, iar cel ce‑i ducea armele venea în urma lui și‑i omora. 14În acest prim atac, Ionatan și cel ce‑i ducea armele au ucis aproape douăzeci de bărbați pe o întindere de o jumătate de iugăr14 Lit.: o jumătate de brazdă de un iugăr de pământ, adică jumătate din parcela de pământ care se putea lucra într‑o zi cu o pereche de boi; aproximativ ¼ ha (2500 mp). Atunci Saul i‑a zis preotului: „Retrage‑ți mâna!“

Viața lui Ionatan în pericol
24Bărbații lui Israel au fost la strâmtoare în acea zi, deoarece Saul pusese un jurământ asupra poporului, zicând: „Blestemat să fie omul care va mânca pâine până seara, înainte de a mă răzbuna pe dușmanii mei.“ Astfel, niciunul dintre ei n‑a gustat mâncare. 25Tot poporul25 Lit.: Toată țara. a intrat într‑o pădure unde, pe suprafața pământului, se afla miere. 26Când a intrat poporul în pădure, iată că mierea curgea din faguri, însă nimeni nu și‑a dus miere la gură cu mâna26 Lit.: Nimeni nu și‑a întins mâna spre gura lui. deoarece poporul se temea din cauza jurământului. 27Ionatan însă nu auzise jurământul cu care tatăl său legase poporul. De aceea el a întins vârful toiagului care se afla în mâna lui și l‑a înmuiat în mierea din fagure. Și‑a dus miere cu mâna la gură și ochii i s‑au luminat.
28Atunci unul dintre bărbați i‑a zis:
– Tatăl tău a pus poporul sub un jurământ sever, zicând: „Blestemat să fie omul care va mânca pâine astăzi.“
Poporul era epuizat.
29Atunci Ionatan a zis:
– Tatăl meu a tulburat țara. Priviți cum mi s‑au luminat ochii pentru că am gustat puțin din mierea aceasta! 30Cât de bine ar fi fost dacă poporul ar fi mâncat astăzi din prada pe care a luat‑o de la dușmanii lui! N‑ar fi fost înfrângerea filistenilor mai mare?
31În ziua aceea i‑au ucis pe filisteni de la Micmaș până la Aialon. Poporul era epuizat. 32Prin urmare, poporul s‑a năpustit asupra prăzii, au luat oi, vite și viței, le‑au înjunghiat pe pământ și le‑au mâncat cu sânge cu tot.
33Unii i‑au spus însă lui Saul:
– Iată, poporul păcătuiește împotriva Domnului, mâncând carnea cu sânge cu tot.33 Vezi Gen. 9:4; Lev. 17:11-12; Deut. 12:16.
Saul a spus:
– V‑ați purtat cu necredincioșie! Acum, rostogoliți până aici o piatră mare. 34Dați de veste printre oameni să‑și aducă fiecare boul sau oaia, să le taie aici și apoi să le mănânce, ca să nu mai păcătuiască împotriva Domnului, mâncând carne cu sânge.
Astfel, în acea noapte, fiecare și‑a adus cu el boul și l‑a tăiat acolo. 35Saul a zidit un altar Domnului; era prima dată când zidea un altar Domnului.
36Apoi a zis:
– Haideți să coborâm după filisteni în timpul nopții, să‑i prădăm până în zori și să nu lăsăm viu pe niciunul dintre ei.
Ei au răspuns:
– Fă tot ceea ce consideri că este bine.36, 40 Lit.: tot ceea ce este bine în ochii tăi.
Dar preotul a zis:
– Să ne apropiem aici de Dumnezeu.
37Saul L‑a întrebat pe Dumnezeu:
– Să cobor după filisteni? Îi vei da în mâinile lui Israel?
Însă, în acea zi, El nu i‑a răspuns.
38Atunci Saul a zis:
– Să vină aici toți conducătorii poporului ca să descoperim ce păcat a fost săvârșit astăzi. 39Viu este Domnul, Care îl izbăvește pe Israel, că și dacă ar fi vorba despre fiul meu Ionatan, chiar și el va trebui să moară.
Însă nimeni din popor nu i‑a răspuns.
40Saul a zis întregului Israel:
– Voi veți sta într‑o parte, iar eu împreună cu fiul meu Ionatan vom sta în partea cealaltă.
Poporul i‑a răspuns lui Saul:
– Fă ceea ce consideri că este bine.
41Saul a zis Domnului, Dumnezeul lui Israel:
– Arată‑ne adevărul!
Sorțul a căzut pe Ionatan și Saul, iar poporul a scăpat.
42Atunci Saul a zis:
– Aruncați sorțul între mine și fiul meu Ionatan.
Și sorțul a căzut pe Ionatan.
43Saul i‑a zis lui Ionatan:
– Spune‑mi ce ai făcut.
Ionatan i‑a răspuns și a zis:
– Am gustat puțină miere cu vârful toiagului pe care‑l aveam în mână. Iată‑mă, voi muri!
44Saul a zis:
– Dumnezeu să Se poarte cu toată asprimea față de mine44 Formulă tipică de jurământ (lit.: Așa să‑mi facă Dumnezeu și chiar mai mult). dacă nu vei muri, Ionatane!
45Dar poporul i‑a zis lui Saul:
– Chiar trebuie să moară Ionatan, cel care a adus această mare izbăvire pentru Israel? Nicidecum! Viu este Domnul că nici măcar un fir de păr nu va cădea la pământ din capul lui, deoarece el a lucrat cu Dumnezeu în această zi.
Poporul l‑a salvat astfel pe Ionatan și n‑a fost omorât. 46Saul a încetat să‑i mai urmărească pe filisteni, și filistenii s‑au retras în teritoriul lor.
Realizările și familia lui Saul
47După ce Saul a început să domnească peste Israel, el a luptat împotriva tuturor dușmanilor săi din toate părțile: împotriva moabiților, împotriva fiilor lui Amon, împotriva edomiților, împotriva regilor din Țoba și împotriva filistenilor. În orice parte se ducea, era necruțător. 48El a luptat vitejește și i‑a învins pe amalekiți, eliberând Israelul din mâna jefuitorilor săi.
49Fiii lui Saul erau Ionatan, Ișvi și Malchi‑Șua. Fiica sa cea întâi născută se numea Merab, cea mică se numea Mihal, 50iar soția lui se numea Ahinoam, fiica lui Ahimaaț. 1One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.
2Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, 3among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.
4On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.
6Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
7“Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
8Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. 9If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.”
11So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in.” 12The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.”
So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”
13Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.
Israel Routs the Philistines
15Then panic struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.14:15 Or a terrible panic
16Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. 17Then Saul said to the men who were with him, “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.
18Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)14:18 Hebrew; Septuagint “Bring the ephod.” (At that time he wore the ephod before the Israelites.) 19While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
20Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords. 21Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. 23So on that day the Lord saved Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.
Jonathan Eats Honey
24Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.
25The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 26When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.14:27 Or his strength was renewed; similarly in verse 29 28Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food today!’ That is why the men are faint.”
29Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”
31That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted. 32They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood. 33Then someone said to Saul, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood in it.”
“You have broken faith,” he said. “Roll a large stone over here at once.” 34Then he said, “Go out among the men and tell them, ‘Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still in it.’ ”
So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. 35Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.
36Saul said, “Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”
“Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied.
But the priest said, “Let us inquire of God here.”
37So Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?” But God did not answer him that day.
38Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today. 39As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives, even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan, he must die.” But not one of them said a word.
40Saul then said to all the Israelites, “You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.”
“Do what seems best to you,” they replied.
41Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,14:41 Septuagint; Hebrew does not have “Why… at fault. respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. 42Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.
43Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”
So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”
44Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan.”
45But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.
46Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.
47After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings14:47 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint king of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.14:47 Hebrew; Septuagint he was victorious 48He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.
Saul’s Family
49Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal. 50His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle. 51Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.
52All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.
