Покајање становника Ниниве
1Реч Господња по други пут дође Јони: 2„Устани и иди у Ниниву, тај велики град и проповедај му оно што ти ја кажем.“
3Јона устане и оде у Ниниву по речи Господњој. А Нинива је била велики град пред Богом, три дана хода. 4Кад је ушао у град, Јона је ишао само дан хода проповедајући: „Још четрдесет дана и Нинива ће бити уништена.“ 5Нинивљани су поверовали Богу; прогласили су пост, па су се, од највећег до најмањег, обукли у кострет.
6Кад је вест дошла до цара, он је устао са свог престола, скинуо своје рухо, ставио на себе кострет и сео у пепео. 7Онда је заповедио да вичу по Ниниви:
„По налогу цара и његових великаша:
’Ни човек ни стока, било крупна или ситна, не сме ништа окусити! Нека не пасу и не пију воду. 8Нека се и стока и људи покрију кострећу, и нека из све снаге призивају Бога. Нека се свако одврати од свога злог пута и од насиља које је чинио. 9Ко зна? Можда ће се Бог одвратити и милостиво одустати од свог љутог гнева, па не изгинемо.’“
10Бог је видео њихова дела, како су се одвратили од својих злих путева, па је одустао од несреће, коју је рекао да ће извршити над њима. И тако је није извршио.
Jonah Goes to Nineveh
1A message from the Lord came to Jonah a second time. The Lord said, 2“Go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce to its people the message I give you.”
3Jonah obeyed the Lord. He went to Nineveh. It was a very large city. In fact, it took about three days to go through it. 4Jonah began by going one whole day into the city. As he went, he announced, “In 40 days Nineveh will be destroyed.” 5The people of Nineveh believed God’s warning. So they decided not to eat any food for a while. And all of them put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. That’s what everyone did, from the least important of them to the most important.
6Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh. He got up from his throne. He took off his royal robes. He also dressed himself in the clothing of sadness. And then he sat down in the dust. 7Here is the message he sent out to the people of Nineveh.
“I and my nobles give this order.
Don’t let people or animals taste anything. That includes your herds and flocks. People and animals must not eat or drink anything. 8Let people and animals alike be covered with the clothing of sadness. All of you must call out to God with all your hearts. Stop doing what is evil. Don’t harm others. 9Who knows? God might take pity on us. He might not be angry with us anymore. Then we won’t die.”
10God saw what they did. He saw that they stopped doing what was evil. So he took pity on them. He didn’t destroy them as he had said he would.
