Arad destroyed
1When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2Then Israel made this vow to the Lord: ‘If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy21:2 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or people to the Lord, often by totally destroying them; also in verse 3. their cities.’ 3The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.21:3 Hormah means destruction.
The bronze snake
4They travelled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea,21:4 Or the Sea of Reeds to go round Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; 5they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!’
6Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, ‘We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people.
8The Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.’ 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
The journey to Moab
10The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. 11Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab towards the sunrise. 12From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. 13They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14That is why the Book of the Wars of the Lord says:
‘…Zahab21:14 Septuagint; Hebrew Waheb in Suphah and the ravines,
the Arnon 15and21:14,15 Or ‘I have been given from Suphah and the ravines / of the Arnon 15 to the slopes of the ravines
that lead to the settlement of Ar
and lie along the border of Moab.’
16From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the Lord said to Moses, ‘Gather the people together and I will give them water.’
17Then Israel sang this song:
‘Spring up, O well!
Sing about it,
18about the well that the princes dug,
that the nobles of the people sank –
the nobles with sceptres and staffs.’
Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.
Defeat of Sihon and Og
21Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites:
22‘Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.’
23But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. 24Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because their border was fortified. 25Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. 26Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.
27That is why the poets say:
‘Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
let Sihon’s city be restored.
28‘Fire went out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the city of Sihon.
It consumed Ar of Moab,
the citizens of Arnon’s heights.
29Woe to you, Moab!
You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!
He has given up his sons as fugitives
and his daughters as captives
to Sihon king of the Amorites.
30‘But we have overthrown them;
Heshbon’s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
which extends to Medeba.’
31So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.
32After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33Then they turned and went up along the road towards Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
34The Lord said to Moses, ‘Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.’
35So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land.

1人々は、先の偵察隊の一行と同じ道を通り、アラデの近くに来ました。それを知ったカナン人アラデの王はイスラエル人を攻撃し、何人かを捕虜にしました。 2そこでイスラエルの民は、「アラデの国を征服させてください。国中の町を必ず全滅させます」と主に誓願しました。 3願いは聞かれ、彼らはカナン人と彼らの町を滅ぼしました。そこをホルマ〔「全滅」の意〕と呼ぶようになったのは、この時からです。
青銅の蛇
4このあと彼らはホル山に帰り、そこから南へ行き、エドムの国をぐるりと回って、紅海へ通じる道に出ました。ところが、途中で我慢できなくなり、 5また文句を言い始めたのです。不平不満はモーセに集中しました。「何の恨みがあって、われわれをエジプトから連れ出し、こんな荒野で飢え死にさせるのか。食べ物も飲み物もないではないか。あんなまずいマナは、もうたくさんだ。」
6これに主は怒り、彼らを毒蛇にかませたので、多くの者が死にました。 7人々は困り果ててモーセに泣きつきました。「赦してください。私たちが間違っていました。主とあなたのおっしゃるとおりにしていればよかったのです。お願いですから、毒蛇がいなくなるように主に祈ってください。」モーセは民のために祈りました。
8主の答えはこうでした。「銅で毒蛇の複製を作り、竿の先に掲げなさい。かまれた者で、わたしの言うとおり、それを見上げる者は助けよう。」
9モーセはさっそく蛇の複製を作り、竿の先につけました。かまれた者で、それを見上げた者は一人残らず治りました。
モアブへの旅
10このあと一行はオボテに行き、そこで野営しました。 11そこからさらに、モアブに近い荒野にあるイエ・ハアバリム、 12ゼレデの谷へと進み、そこに野営しました。 13それから、モアブとエモリとの国境沿いを流れるアルノン川の向こう岸に移りました。 14アルノン川のことは、『主の戦いの書』（折々に作られたイスラエルの戦いの歌）に、ワヘブの町を通り、 15モアブとエモリの国境を流れている、と記されています。
16次に向かったのはベエル〔「井戸」の意〕です。そこは主がモーセに、「水を与えるから、みなを集めなさい」と命じた場所でした。 17-18その時のことは、次のようなイスラエルの歌になっています。
「水よ、どんどんわき上がれ。
喜びの歌を歌おう。
おお、すばらしい井戸。
指導者たちが杖とシャベルで掘った井戸。」
一行はそこで荒野を離れ、マタナ、 19ナハリエル、バモテを通って、 20モアブ平原の谷まで行きました。そこはピスガ山のふもとで、山頂からは荒野がはるかに見渡せました。
シホン王とオグ王を打つ
21イスラエルは、エモリ人の王シホンに使者を送りました。 22「どうか、領内を通らせてください。国境を越えるまでは、決して街道からそれたりしません。畑を踏み荒らしたり、ぶどう園に入ったり、水を飲んだりもしません。」
23しかし、王は承知しませんでした。それどころか軍を集め、わざわざ荒野に出て、ヤハツで戦いをしかけてきたのです。 24ところが王は戦死し、勝ったのはイスラエル人のほうでした。結局、アルノン川から、北はヤボク川、東はアモンとの国境までを占領しました。アモンとの国境は地形が険しく、それ以上は進めなかったのです。
25-26こうしてイスラエルはエモリ人の国を占領し、そこに住みつきました。首都だったヘシュボンもイスラエル人のものになりました。シホン王は以前にモアブを治めていた王と戦って勝ち、アルノン川までの全土を占領していたのです。 27-30昔の詩人が歌っているとおりです。
「シホン王の都、ヘシュボンに来てみるがいい。
岩のように堅い都に。
王は炎のような勢いでモアブの町アルに攻め上り、
完全に滅ぼしてしまった。
アルノン川の高地にそびえるあのアルを。
気の毒なモアブ、ケモシュの神を拝む人たち。
とうとう最期が来たのだ。
息子は外国へ逃げ、
娘はエモリ人の王シホンに捕らえられた。
しかし、今やわれわれが彼らの子孫を滅ぼした。
ヘシュボンからディボンに至るまで、
メデバの近くのノファフまで。」
31-32エモリ人の国にいる間に、モーセはヤゼルのあたりに偵察を送り込みました。よく調べてから攻めようとしたのです。そして、とうとう町々を占領し、エモリ人を追い出しました。
33次の目標はバシャンの都でした。バシャンの王オグはこれに対抗し、エデレイに兵を集めました。 34主はモーセを励ましました。「恐れるな。勝敗はもう決まっている。ヘシュボンでシホン王と戦ったように、オグ王と戦いなさい。」
35そして、イスラエルは勝利を収めたのです。オグ王とその子らから部下に至るまですべて打ったので、バシャンもイスラエル人のものとなりました。
