1A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The Lord’s anger against Nineveh
2The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The Lord takes vengeance on his foes
and vents his wrath against his enemies.
3The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;
the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,
and clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He rebukes the sea and dries it up;
he makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither
and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
5The mountains quake before him
and the hills melt away.
The earth trembles at his presence,
the world and all who live in it.
6Who can withstand his indignation?
Who can endure his fierce anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire;
the rocks are shattered before him.
7The Lord is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,
8but with an overwhelming flood
he will make an end of Nineveh;
he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
9Whatever they plot against the Lord
he will bring1:9 Or What do you foes plot against the Lord? / He will bring it to an end;
trouble will not come a second time.
10They will be entangled among thorns
and drunk from their wine;
they will be consumed like dry stubble.1:10 The meaning of the Hebrew for this verse is uncertain.
11From you, Nineveh, has one come forth
who plots evil against the Lord
and devises wicked plans.
12This is what the Lord says:
‘Although they have allies and are numerous,
they will be destroyed and pass away.
Although I have afflicted you, Judah,
I will afflict you no more.
13Now I will break their yoke from your neck
and tear your shackles away.’
14The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh:
‘You will have no descendants to bear your name.
I will destroy the images and idols
that are in the temple of your gods.
I will prepare your grave,
for you are vile.’
15Look, there on the mountains,
the feet of one who brings good news,
who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your festivals, Judah,
and fulfil your vows.
No more will the wicked invade you;
they will be completely destroyed.1:15 In Hebrew texts this verse (1:15) is numbered 2:1.
انتقام خداوند از نينوا
1خداوند اين رؤيا را که دربارهٔ نينوا است به ناحوم القوشی نشان داد: 2خداوند غيور است و از کسانی که با وی مخالفت ورزند، انتقام می‌گيرد و با خشم شديد آنان را مجازات می‌کند. 3خداوند دير خشمگين می‌شود ولی گناه را هرگز بی‌سزا نمی‌گذارد. قدرت او عظيم است و آن را می‌توان در گردبادهای وحشتناک و طوفانهای شديد مشاهده کرد. ابرها خاک زير پای او هستند! 4به فرمان خداوند درياها و رودها خشک می‌شوند، چراگاههای سبز و خرم باشان و کرمل از بين می‌روند و جنگلهای سرسبز لبنان طراوت و خرمی خود را از دست می‌دهند. 5در حضور او کوهها می‌لرزند، تپه‌ها ناپديد می‌شوند، زمين متلاشی می‌گردد و ساکنانش نابود می‌شوند.
6کيست که بتواند در برابر خشم خدا ايستادگی کند؟ غضب او مانند آتش فرو می‌ريزد و کوهها در برابر خشم او خرد می‌شوند.
7خداوند نيکوست و در روز بلا و سختی پناهگاه می‌باشد. او از کسانی که به او توکل می‌کنند مراقبت می‌نمايد، 8ولی دشمنان خود را با سيلابی شديد از بين می‌برد و آنها را به ظلمت مرگ روانه می‌کند.
9ای نينوا، چرا به فکر مخالفت با خداوند هستی؟ او با يک ضربه تو را از پای در خواهد آورد، به طوری که ديگر نخواهی توانست مقاومت کنی. 10او دشمنانش را مثل خارهای به هم پيچيده به داخل آتش می‌اندازد و آنها همچون کاه در شعله‌های آتش سوخته شده دود می‌شوند. 11اين پادشاه تو کيست که جرأت می‌کند بر ضد خداوند توطئه کند؟ 12خداوند می‌فرمايد: «سپاه آشور هر قدر هم قوی و بزرگ باشد، محو و نابود خواهد شد.
«ای قوم من، به اندازه کافی شما را تنبيه کرده‌ام! 13اينک زنجيرهای شما را پاره می‌کنم و شما را از قيد اسارت پادشاه آشور آزاد می‌سازم.»
14خداوند به پادشاه آشور می‌فرمايد: «نسل تو را از بين می‌برم تا نام و نشانی از تو باقی نماند. بتها و بتخانه‌های تو را نابود می‌کنم و قبرت را می‌کنم، چون بر اثر گناه فاسد شده‌ای.»
خبر سقوط نينوا
15ببينيد، قاصدی از کوهها سرازير شده، خبر خوش پيروزی را ندا می‌دهند. ای يهودا، عيدهای خود را برگزار نما و نذرهای خود را به خدا وفا کن، چون دشمن، ديگر هرگز برنمی‌گردد. او برای هميشه ريشه کن شده است!
