Reward for obedience
1‘ “Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.
2‘ “Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.
3‘ “If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.
6‘ “I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no-one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. 8Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
9‘ “I will look on you with favour and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. 10You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. 11I will put my dwelling-place26:11 Or my tabernacle among you, and I will not abhor you. 12I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. 13I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
Punishment for disobedience
14‘ “But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, 15and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, 16then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no-one is pursuing you.
18‘ “If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. 19I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. 20Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.
21‘ “If you remain hostile towards me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve. 22I will send wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few in number that your roads will be deserted.
23‘ “If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile towards me, 24I myself will be hostile towards you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25And I will bring the sword on you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.
27‘ “If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile towards me, 28then in my anger I will be hostile towards you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. 30I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies26:30 Or your funeral offerings on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you. 31I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings. 32I myself will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who live there will be appalled. 33I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out my sword and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste, and your cities will lie in ruins. 34Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate and you are in the country of your enemies; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.
36‘ “As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a wind-blown leaf will put them to flight. They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no-one is pursuing them. 37They will stumble over one another as though fleeing from the sword, even though no-one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies. 38You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you. 39Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’ sins they will waste away.
40‘ “But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors – their unfaithfulness and their hostility towards me, 41which made me hostile towards them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies – then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, 42I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees. 44Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am the Lord their God. 45But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.” ’
46These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the Lord established at Mount Sinai between himself and the Israelites through Moses.
Belønningen for lydighed
1I må ikke lave afguder eller tilbede stenstøtter og udskårne billeder i træ eller sten, for jeg er Herren, jeres Gud.
2I skal overholde loven om sabbatsdagen og vise respekt for min helligdom, for jeg er Herren.
3Hvis I adlyder mine befalinger og nøje overholder mine love, 4vil jeg sende regn til rette tid, så jorden giver gode afgrøder, og træerne bugner med frugt. 5Når vinhøsten nærmer sig om efteråret, vil I endnu ikke være færdige med at tærske korn, og når tiden kommer til at så jeres vinterkorn, vil I endnu ikke være færdige med at høste vindruerne. Adlyder I mig, vil jeg give jer rigeligt med mad og love jer tryghed i landet, 6for jeg vil give jer fred, og I skal lægge jer til ro uden frygt. Jeg vil jage de vilde dyr bort og sørge for, at landet ikke hærges af krig. 7I skal jage jeres fjender på flugt, og I skal forfølge dem og hugge dem ned. 8Fem af jer vil være nok til at jage 100 fjender på flugt—og 100 af jer nok til 10.000! Fjenderne skal falde for jeres sværd.
9Adlyder I mig, vil jeg hjælpe jer og gøre jer til et stort folk, for da vil jeg opfylde mine pagtsløfter til jer. 10Jeres høst skal blive så stor, at I må smide den gamle høst ud for at få plads til den nye. 11Jeg vil bo midt iblandt jer, og jeg vil ikke lade jer i stikken. 12Jeg vil holde til hos jer, og I skal være mit folk, 13for jeg er Herren, jeres Gud, som førte jer ud af Egyptens land, så I ikke længere skulle være slaver. Jeg har fjernet slaveåget fra jeres skuldre og givet jer jeres værdighed og selvrespekt tilbage.
Straffen for ulydighed
14Men hvis I ikke vil lytte til mig og ikke adlyder mine befalinger, 15hvis I bryder min pagt ved at foragte mine love og forskrifter, 16så vil jeg give jer hvad I fortjener: Jeg vil straffe jer med sygdom og pest, som skal fylde jer med rædsel og tage livsmodet fra jer. Da er det forgæves, at I tilsår jeres marker, for jeres fjender skal spise afgrøderne. 17Jeg vil være imod jer, så jeres fjender vil besejre jer og tage magten fra jer. Da bliver I forvandlet til et frygtsomt folk, der flygter blot ved tanken om fjender.
18Hvis det ikke hjælper, og I stadig ikke vil adlyde mig, da vil jeg straffe jer syv gange værre for jeres synd. 19Jeg vil knække jeres stolthed ved at holde regnen tilbage, så jorden bliver hård som sten, 20og uanset hvor hårdt I knokler, er jeres arbejde forgæves: Afgrøderne vokser ikke, og frugttræerne blomstrer ikke.
21Hvis det ikke hjælper, og I stadig sætter jer op imod mig og nægter at adlyde mig, så vil jeg straffe jer endnu syv gange værre for jeres synd: 22Jeg vil sende vilde dyr imod jer, og de skal drive rovdrift på jeres børn og jeres kvæg. Jeg vil tynde ud iblandt jer, så vejene ligger øde hen.
23Hvis det ikke hjælper, og I stadig står mig imod og ikke vil tage ved lære, 24da vil jeg stå jer imod og straffe jer syv gange værre for jeres synd: 25Fordi I har brudt min pagt, vil jeg hævne mig på jer ved at sende fjender imod jer. Søger I tilflugt i byerne, vil jeg sende epidemier imod jer, så I bliver nødt til at overgive jer til fjenderne. 26Der vil blive en sådan mangel på korn, at ti husstande må deles om det, der kan bages i en enkelt ovn. Brødet vil blive delt ud i småstykker efter vægt, og I vil ikke blive mætte af det.
27Men hvis det ikke hjælper, og I stadig nægter at adlyde mig, 28da vil jeg give min vrede frit løb og straffe jer syv gange værre for jeres synder: 29I skal blive tvunget til at spise kødet af jeres egne sønner og døtre! 30Jeg vil vælte de statuer og ødelægge de røgelsesaltre, I har bygget rundt omkring på højene for at dyrke jeres afguder. Jeg vil lægge jeres lig i bunker oven på jeres afguders ‚lig’. Ja, jeg vil vende mig bort fra jer i afsky. 31Jeg vil lægge jeres byer øde, nedbryde jeres offersteder og nægte at tage imod røgelsesofre. 32Og ikke nok med det: Jeg vil lægge hele jeres land øde og lade jeres fjender overtage det, mens de undrende er vidne til den straf, jeg sender over jer.
33I vil opleve en frygtelige krig, og jeg vil sprede jer blandt fremmede folkeslag. Jeres land skal lægges øde, og jeres byer skal jævnes med jorden. 34-35Da skal jorden langt om længe få fred og hvile. Og den skal få godtgjort alle de år, I udpinte den. Den skal ligge brak i den tid, I opholder jer som fanger i fjendens land. I den tid skal jorden opleve fred og ro. Det skal være den sabbatshvile, jeg godtgør den, fordi I udpinte den ved at overtræde budet om sabbatåret.
36-37Og de af jer, som overlever krigen, skal pines af frygt og bekymring i landflygtigheden. Selv lyden af et blad, der hvirvles af sted for vinden, skal få jer til at fare sammen og flygte, som var der en hær i hælene på jer. I skal falde over jeres egne ben og snuble over hinanden i vild forvirring, selv om der ikke er nogen, som forfølger jer. I kan ikke klare jer mod jeres fjender. 38I vil dø blandt fremmede folkeslag og blive begravet i fremmed jord. 39Den sidste rest af overlevende skal sygne hen i fortvivlelse i fjendeland som følge af deres egen og deres forfædres ulydighed.
40Til sidst vil de så angre deres egen og deres forfædres oprør og utroskab imod mig. De vil erkende, at fordi de først vendte ryggen til mig, 41måtte jeg vende ryggen til dem. Det var grunden til, at jeg førte dem i eksil i fjendeland. Når deres stolte, uomskårne hjerter til sidst ydmyger sig, og de accepterer den straf, jeg måtte sende over dem som følge af deres ulydighed, 42da vil jeg mindes mine løfter til Abraham, Isak og Jakob, og jeg vil føre dem tilbage til det land, jeg lovede dem. 43Men i mellemtiden skal landet opleve fred og hvile, for jeg godtgør landet de tabte sabbatter, mens folket i eksil må afsone straffen for at have forkastet mine love og forskrifter. 44På trods af det onde, de har gjort, vil jeg dog ikke forkaste dem fuldstændigt og udrydde dem helt, for derved ville jeg helt annullere min pagt med dem. Jeg er stadig Herren, deres Gud. 45For at redde den sidste rest vil jeg opfylde mine løfter til forfædrene om at være deres Gud. Jeg førte jo deres forfædre ud af Egypten og ind i landet for øjnene af mange folkeslag. Jeg er Herren.”
46Det var alle de love, forskrifter og anvisninger, som Herren gav Israels folk gennem Moses på Sinaibjerget.
