The appointed festivals
1The Lord said to Moses, 2‘Speak to the Israelites and say to them: “These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.
The Sabbath
3‘ “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
4‘ “These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: 5the Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. 6On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. 7On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do not do any of your ordinary work. 8For seven days present a food offering to the Lord. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do not do any of your ordinary work.” ’
Offering the Firstfruits
9The Lord said to Moses, 10‘Speak to the Israelites and say to them: “When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest. 11He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord so it will be accepted on your behalf; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath. 12On the day you wave the sheaf, you must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the Lord a lamb a year old without defect, 13together with its grain offering of one-fifth of an ephah23:13 That is, probably about 3.2 kilograms; also in verse 17 of the finest flour mixed with olive oil – a food offering presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma – and its drink offering of a quarter of a hin23:13 That is, about 1 litre of wine. 14You must not eat any bread, or roasted or new grain, until the very day you bring this offering to your God. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.
The Festival of Weeks
15‘ “From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count seven full weeks. 16Count fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord. 17From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of one-fifth of an ephah of the finest flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits to the Lord. 18Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a year old and without defect, one young bull and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to the Lord, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings – a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 19Then sacrifice one male goat for a sin offering23:19 Or purification offering and two lambs, each a year old, for a fellowship offering. 20The priest is to wave the two lambs before the Lord as a wave offering, together with the bread of the firstfruits. They are a sacred offering to the Lord for the priest. 21On that same day you are to proclaim a sacred assembly and not do any ordinary work. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.
22‘ “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God.” ’
The Festival of Trumpets
23The Lord said to Moses, 24‘Say to the Israelites: “On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of sabbath rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. 25Do not do any of your ordinary work, but present a food offering to the Lord.” ’
The Day of Atonement
26The Lord said to Moses, 27‘The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves,23:27 Or and fast; similarly in verses 29 and 32 and present a food offering to the Lord. 28Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. 29Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people. 30I will destroy from among their people anyone who does any work on that day. 31You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. 32It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.’
The Festival of Tabernacles
33The Lord said to Moses, 34‘Say to the Israelites: “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month the Lord’s Festival of Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. 35The first day is a sacred assembly; do not do any of your ordinary work. 36For seven days present food offerings to the Lord, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present a food offering to the Lord. It is the closing special assembly; do not do any of your ordinary work.
37(‘ “These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing food offerings to the Lord – the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings required for each day. 38These offerings are in addition to those for the Lord’s Sabbaths and23:38 Or These festivals are in addition to the Lord’s Sabbaths, and these offerings are in addition to your gifts and whatever you have vowed and all the freewill offerings you give to the Lord.)
39‘ “So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days; the first day is a day of sabbath rest, and the eighth day also is a day of sabbath rest. 40On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees – from palms, willows and other leafy trees – and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. 41Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. 42Live in temporary shelters for seven days: all native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters 43so that your descendants will know that I made the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” ’
44So Moses announced to the Israelites the appointed festivals of the Lord.
Heilige feesten
1-3De Here zei tegen Mozes: ‘Maak aan het volk van Israël bekend dat het jaarlijks een aantal heilige feesten voor de Here moet vieren, gelegenheden waarbij heel het volk bijeenkomt. Zes dagen moet u werken, maar de zevende dag is een dag van volledige rust, die dag zult u in een heilige vergadering bijeenkomen. Houd u aan deze regel, waar u ook woont.
4Hier volgen de heilige feesten die elk jaar op een vaste tijd moeten worden gevierd.
5Het Pesach-offer voor de Here. Dit moet op de veertiende dag van de eerste maand worden gevierd.
6Het Feest van de Ongezuurde Broden. Dit feest begint op de eerste dag na Pesach, dat is de vijftiende dag van diezelfde maand. 7Op de eerste dag van dit feest moet het volk in een heilige samenkomst bijeenkomen en zal het gewone werk niet worden gedaan. 8Hetzelfde moet u doen op de zevende dag van het feest. Op elk van de tussenliggende dagen moet u een brandoffer aan de Here brengen.
9-11Het Feest van de eerste opbrengsten van het land of Oogstfeest. Wanneer u aankomt in het land dat Ik u zal geven en u uw eerste oogst binnenhaalt, breng dan de eerste schoof van de oogst op de dag na de sabbat bij de priester. Hij zal het aan de Here offeren door het omhoog te heffen en de Here zal het aanvaarden als uw geschenk. 12Diezelfde dag moet u de Here een eenjarig lam zonder gebreken als brandoffer brengen. 13Dit offer moet vergezeld gaan van een spijsoffer van vier viertiende liter fijn meel, gemengd met olijfolie, dat ook met vuur aan de Here moet worden geofferd. Dit zal een aangenaam offer zijn in de ogen van de Here. Offer ook een drankoffer van negentiende liter wijn. 14Dit alles moet eerst worden gedaan, voordat u zelf van de oogst—brood, geroosterd of vers koren—eet. Dit is een eeuwige wet voor het hele volk.
15Vanaf die dag, na de sabbat, moet u zeven weken aftellen, tot de dag na de zevende sabbat. 16U moet dus vijftig dagen aftellen en dan de Here een offer brengen van een deel van uw latere oogst (dat is het Wekenfeest, dat ook wel Pinksteren heet). 17Dit zal bestaan uit twee broden, die u uit uw woonplaats moet meebrengen en die door ze omhoog te heffen aan de Here zullen worden geofferd. Bak deze broden van vier viertiende liter fijn meel met zuurdeeg. Het is een offer voor de Here van de eerste opbrengst van uw late oogst. 18Samen met het brood en de wijn moet u de Here als brandoffers brengen: zeven eenjarige lammeren zonder gebreken, een jonge stier en twee rammen. Allemaal brandoffers die aangenaam zijn voor de Here. 19En u moet een bok als zondoffer en twee eenjarige lammeren als vredeoffer aan de Here offeren. 20De priesters zullen deze offers aan de Here offeren door ze omhoog te heffen, samen met de broden die de eerste opbrengsten van uw late oogst voorstellen. Zij zijn heilig voor de Here en zullen als voedsel aan de priesters worden gegeven. 21Die dag zult u allen bijeenroepen voor een heilige samenkomst, laat die dag al het werk rusten. Dit is een wet die van generatie op generatie van kracht blijft. 22En wanneer u de oogst binnenhaalt, bekommer u dan niet te erg om de randen van de akker en het gevallen graan. Laat dat maar liggen voor de armen en voor de buitenlanders die zelf geen land hebben. Ik ben de Here, uw God!
23-24 Het Feest van de Bazuinen. De eerste dag van de zevende maand is een dag van rust voor alle mensen, waarop zij moeten bijeenkomen in een heilige samenkomst. Die dag zal worden aangekondigd met een luid bazuingeschal. 25Doe geen werk op die dag, maar breng de Here een brandoffer.
26-27 De Grote Verzoendag. Deze dag valt negen dagen na het Feest van de Bazuinen. Alle mensen moeten bijeenkomen in een heilige samenkomst voor de Here, met berouw over de zonden die zij deden, zij zullen brandoffers aan de Here brengen. 28Werk die dag niet, want het is een speciale dag om verzoening te doen voor de Here, uw God. 29Degene die deze dag niet berouwvol en ootmoedig doorbrengt, zal worden verbannen. 30-31 Ieder die op die dag toch werkt, zal Ik vernietigen. Dit is een wet voor Israël en voor alle komende generaties. 32Want dit is een sabbat van volledige rust, waarop iedereen moet vasten en zich verootmoedigen met een berouwvol hart. Deze tijd voor verzoening begint op de voorafgaande avond en duurt tot de avond daarop.
33-34 Het Loofhuttenfeest. Vijf dagen later, op de vijftiende dag van de zevende maand, moet zeven dagen lang het Loofhuttenfeest voor de Here worden gevierd. 35De eerste dag wordt een heilige samenkomst gehouden, op die dag mag het gewone werk niet worden gedaan. 36Op elk van de zeven feestdagen moet u met vuur een offer aan de Here brengen. Op de achtste dag wordt opnieuw een heilige samenkomst gehouden voor alle mensen en daar zal weer met vuur aan de Here worden geofferd. Het is een vrolijk feest en het gewone werk wordt niet gedaan.
37Dit zijn de jaarlijkse feesten—heilige samenkomsten van het hele volk—waarbij brandoffers aan de Here worden geofferd. 38Deze jaarlijkse feesten worden gevierd naast de normale rustdagen die u elke week hebt. De offers die op deze feesten worden gebracht, komen bij uw gewone offergaven en de normale inlossing van uw beloften. 39Welnu, deze vijftiende dag van de zevende maand aan het einde van de oogsttijd, is het begin van de viering van dit zevendaagse feest voor de Here. Onthoud dat de eerste en achtste dag van het feest dagen van volledige rust zijn. 40Neem op de eerste dag takken van fruitbomen, palmbomen en twijgen van beekwilgen en bouw er loofhutten van en vier zeven dagen lang een vrolijk feest voor de Here. 41Dit jaarlijkse zevendaagse feest is een wet voor alle volgende generaties. 42Gedurende die zeven dagen zal iedere geboren Israëliet in een loofhut wonen. 43Het doel van dit feest is dat het volk Israël van generatie op generatie eraan wordt herinnerd dat Ik het uit Egypte heb bevrijd en het in loofhutten heb laten wonen. Ik ben de Here, uw God.’
44Zo maakte Mozes de feesten van de Here aan de Israëlieten bekend.
