Jephthah and Ephraim
1The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, ‘Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.’
2Jephthah answered, ‘I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?’
4Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, ‘You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.’ 5The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, ‘Let me cross over,’ the men of Gilead asked him, ‘Are you an Ephraimite?’ If he replied, ‘No,’ 6they said, ‘All right, say “Shibboleth”.’ If he said, ‘Sibboleth’, because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7Jephthah led12:7 Traditionally judged; also in verses 8-14 Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.
Ibzan, Elon and Abdon
8After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel. 9He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel for seven years. 10Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
11After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel for ten years. 12Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel. 14He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel for eight years. 15Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
Iefta în conflict cu efraimiții
1Efraimiții s‑au strâns laolaltă, au trecut în Țafon și i‑au zis lui Iefta:
– De ce te‑ai dus să lupți împotriva fiilor lui Amon și nu ne‑ai chemat și pe noi ca să mergem cu tine? Pentru asta vom da foc casei tale și te vom arde și pe tine!
2Iefta le‑a răspuns:
– Eu și poporul meu am avut o mare ceartă cu fiii lui Amon și când v‑am chemat nu m‑ați izbăvit din mâna lor. 3Când am văzut că nu mă ajutați, mi‑am pus viața în joc și am pornit împotriva fiilor lui Amon, iar Domnul i‑a dat în mâna mea. De ce vă suiți astăzi ca să luptați cu mine?
4Iefta i‑a strâns pe toți bărbații Ghiladului și s‑a luptat cu cei din Efraim. Bărbații Ghiladului i‑au învins pe cei din Efraim pentru că aceștia ziceau: „Voi, ghiladiții, sunteți niște fugari ai lui Efraim; Ghiladul aparține lui Efraim și lui Manase!“ 5Ghiladiții au cucerit și vadurile Iordanului dinspre Efraim, astfel că, atunci când vreunul din fugarii efraimiți zicea: „Lasă‑mă să trec!“ ghiladiții îl întrebau: „Ești efraimit?“ Dacă răspundea: „Nu!“ 6îl puneau să zică „Șibolet“. El însă nu putea rosti decât „Sibolet“. Atunci ei îl înșfăcau și îl omorau la vadurile Iordanului. Așa au pierit în vremea aceea patruzeci și două de mii de efraimiți.
7Iefta a judecat7 Cu sensul de a conduce; [peste tot în capitol]. Israelul timp de șase ani. Apoi ghiladitul Iefta a murit și a fost îngropat într‑una din cetățile Ghiladului.
Ibțan, Elon și Abdon
8Cel ce a judecat Israelul după el a fost Ibțan din Betleem. 9El a avut treizeci de fii și treizeci de fiice. Și‑a măritat fiicele în afara clanului, iar pentru fiii lui a adus, de asemenea, treizeci de fete tot din afara clanului. El a judecat pe Israel timp de șapte ani. 10Ibțan a murit și a fost îngropat la Betleem.
11După el, cel ce a judecat Israelul a fost zabulonitul Elon. El a judecat Israelul timp de zece ani. 12Zabulonitul Elon a murit și a fost îngropat în Aialon, pe teritoriul lui Zabulon.
13După el, cel ce a judecat Israelul a fost Abdon, fiul piratonitului Hilel. 14Acesta avea patruzeci de fii și treizeci de nepoți care călăreau pe șaptezeci de măgari. El a judecat Israelul timp de opt ani. 15Apoi Abdon, fiul piratonitului Hilel, a murit și a fost îngropat la Piraton, pe teritoriul lui Efraim, pe muntele amalekiților.
