1Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. 2Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. ‘You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,’ they said, ‘because you are the son of another woman.’ 3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.
4Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, 5the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6‘Come,’ they said, ‘be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.’
7Jephthah said to them, ‘Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?’
8The elders of Gilead said to him, ‘Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.’
9Jephthah answered, ‘Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me – will I really be your head?’
10The elders of Gilead replied, ‘The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.’ 11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: ‘What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?’
13The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, ‘When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.’
14Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, 15saying:
‘This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites. 16But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea11:16 Or the Sea of Reeds and on to Kadesh. 17Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Give us permission to go through your country,” but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18‘Next they travelled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
19‘Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, “Let us pass through your country to our own place.” 20Sihon, however, did not trust Israel11:20 Or however, would not make an agreement for Israel to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
21‘Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, 22capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.
23‘Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess. 25Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them? 26For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? 27I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.’
28The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. 30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.’
32Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
34When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.’
36‘My father,’ she replied, ‘you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. 37But grant me this one request,’ she said. ‘Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.’
38‘You may go,’ he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
Jefta verslaat de Ammonieten
1Jefta was een dapper man uit Gilead, maar hij was de zoon van een prostituee. 2Zijn vader Gilead had ook zonen bij zijn wettige vrouw. Toen deze halfbroers volwassen waren geworden, joegen zij Jefta weg. ‘Jij bent de zoon van een hoer!’ zeiden ze. ‘Jij zult niets erven van vaders bezittingen!’ 3Daarop vluchtte Jefta uit zijn vaders huis naar het land Tob en ging daar wonen. Een groep avonturiers kwam daar bij hem en samen trokken zij eropuit.
4Een tijd later bonden de Ammonieten de strijd aan met Israël. 5-6 De leiders van Gilead gingen naar het land Tob om Jefta te halen. Zij smeekten hem hun aanvoerder te worden in de strijd tegen de Ammonieten. 7Maar Jefta zei tegen hen: ‘Waarom komt u bij mij als u mij haat en mij uit mijn vaders huis hebt weggejaagd? Waarom komt u nu u in de problemen zit?’ 8‘Omdat we u nodig hebben,’ antwoordden ze. ‘Wees onze aanvoerder als we tegen de Ammonieten moeten vechten, dan zult u leider van Gilead en al zijn inwoners worden.’ 9‘Zo!’ riep Jefta uit. ‘Denkt u dat ik dat zo maar geloof?’ 10‘Wij zweren het u bij de Here,’ antwoordden zij. ‘U zult onze leider worden.’ 11Daarop ging Jefta met de leiders van Gilead mee en werd aanvoerder van Israëls leger. De overeenkomst werd bekrachtigd voor de Here in een algemene volksvergadering in Mispa.
12Jefta stuurde boodschappers naar de koning van de Ammonieten met de vraag waarom hij Israël aanviel. 13De koning van de Ammonieten antwoordde dat het land toebehoorde aan de Ammonieten! Hij beweerde dat het van hen gestolen was toen de Israëlieten uit Egypte kwamen en dat het hele gebied vanaf de rivier de Arnon tot de Jabbok en de Jordaan van hem was. ‘Geef mij het land in vrede terug,’ luidde de eis van de koning. 14Jefta stuurde de boodschappers terug met het antwoord: 15‘Israël heeft noch het land van de Moabieten, noch dat van de Ammonieten gestolen. 16Zo is het gegaan: nadat de Israëlieten uit Egypte waren gekomen en de Rietzee waren doorgetrokken, kwamen zij bij Kades. 17Zij stuurden boodschappers naar de koning van Edom met de vraag of hij hun toestemming wilde geven door zijn land te reizen. Maar hun verzoek werd afgewezen. Toen deden ze de koning van Moab hetzelfde verzoek, maar ook hij wees het af. Daarom bleven de Israëlieten in Kades. 18Ten slotte trokken zij door de woestijn om Edom en Moab heen en reisden langs Moabs oostgrens tot de overkant van de rivier de Arnon, waar zij hun kamp opsloegen. En omdat de Arnon de grens van Moab is, zijn ze dus niet in Moab geweest. 19Toen stuurde Israël boodschappers naar koning Sichon van de Amorieten die in Chesbon woonde. Zij vroegen hem of hij Israël toestemming wilde geven door zijn land te trekken naar hun plaats van bestemming. 20Maar koning Sichon vertrouwde Israël niet. Hij verwachtte dat het niet bij een doortocht zou blijven. Daarom verzamelde hij zijn troepen in Jahza en viel Israël aan. 21-22 De Here, de God van Israël, hielp het volk Israël door koning Sichon en diens leger te verslaan. Toen nam Israël het hele gebied van de Amorieten, van de rivier de Arnon tot de Jabbok en van de woestijn tot de Jordaan in bezit. 23De Here, de God van Israël, was het die de Amorieten hun land heeft afgenomen en het aan Israël heeft gegeven. Waarom zouden wij het dan aan u teruggeven? 24Zoals u houdt wat uw god Kemos u heeft gegeven, zo houden wij wat de Here, onze God, ons geeft! 25Trouwens, wie denkt u eigenlijk dat u bent? Bent u beter dan koning Balak, de zoon van Sippor, van Moab? Heeft hij soms geprobeerd zijn land te heroveren, nadat Israël hem had verslagen? 26Maar nu, na driehonderd jaar, maakt u er een probleem van. Al die tijd heeft Israël hier gewoond, verspreid over het gebied tussen Chesbon en Aroër en langs de rivier de Arnon. Waarom hebt u niet eerder geprobeerd dit gebied terug te krijgen? 27Nee, ik heb u niets misdaan. Eerder doet u mij onrecht door tegen mij te strijden. Maar de Here is rechter en zal bepalen wie gelijk heeft, Israël of Ammon.’
28De koning van de Ammonieten reageerde niet op Jeftaʼs boodschap. 29Toen kwam de Geest van de Here over Jefta en hij leidde zijn leger dwars door het gebied Gilead en Manasse, langs de stad Mispa in Gilead en viel de Ammonieten aan.
30-31 Intussen had Jefta de Here beloofd: ‘Als U mij helpt de Ammonieten te verslaan en ik veilig terugkom, zal ik het eerste dat mij uit mijn huis tegemoet komt, aan U offeren!’ 32Daarop viel Jefta de Ammonieten aan en de Here gaf hem de overwinning. 33Hij versloeg de Ammonieten over de hele weg van Aroër tot Minnith, met twintig steden en zelfs tot aan Abel Keramim. Hij bracht hun een zware nederlaag toe en de Ammonieten werden aan het volk Israël onderworpen. 34Toen Jefta naar huis terugging, kwam zijn dochter—zijn enig kind—hem dansend van vreugde tegemoet, een tamboerijn in de handen. 35Zodra hij haar zag, scheurde hij in wanhoop zijn kleren. ‘Ach, mijn lieve dochter!’ riep hij uit. ‘Wat doe je mij verdriet. O, wat vreselijk! Ik heb de Here namelijk iets beloofd en ik kan niet meer terug.’ 36Maar zij zei: ‘Vader, als u de Here iets hebt beloofd, moet u zich aan uw belofte houden, want Hij heeft u een geweldige overwinning geschonken op de Ammonieten. 37Maar geef mij alstublieft twee maanden uitstel. Laat mij eerst met mijn vriendinnen de bergen intrekken om daar te rouwen, omdat ik zo jong ben en ongetrouwd.’ 38‘Goed,’ zei hij. ‘Ga maar.’ Zij trok met haar vriendinnen naar de bergen waar zij twee maanden haar lot beklaagden. 39Daarna ging zij naar haar vader terug en hij deed wat hij had beloofd. Zij is dus nooit getrouwd.
40Sindsdien is het in Israël gebruikelijk dat de Israëlitische meisjes elk jaar gedurende vier dagen het lot van Jeftaʼs dochter gedenken.
