Zophar
1Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
2‘My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
because I am greatly disturbed.
3I hear a rebuke that dishonours me,
and my understanding inspires me to reply.
4‘Surely you know how it has been from of old,
ever since mankind20:4 Or Adam was placed on the earth,
5that the mirth of the wicked is brief,
the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.
6Though the pride of the godless person reaches to the heavens
and his head touches the clouds,
7he will perish for ever, like his own dung;
those who have seen him will say, “Where is he?”
8Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found,
banished like a vision of the night.
9The eye that saw him will not see him again;
his place will look on him no more.
10His children must make amends to the poor;
his own hands must give back his wealth.
11The youthful vigour that fills his bones
will lie with him in the dust.
12‘Though evil is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,
13though he cannot bear to let it go
and lets it linger in his mouth,
14yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;
it will become the venom of serpents within him.
15He will spit out the riches he swallowed;
God will make his stomach vomit them up.
16He will suck the poison of serpents;
the fangs of an adder will kill him.
17He will not enjoy the streams,
the rivers flowing with honey and cream.
18What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;
he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.
19For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute;
he has seized houses he did not build.
20‘Surely he will have no respite from his craving;
he cannot save himself by his treasure.
21Nothing is left for him to devour;
his prosperity will not endure.
22In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;
the full force of misery will come upon him.
23When he has filled his belly,
God will vent his burning anger against him
and rain down his blows on him.
24Though he flees from an iron weapon,
a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.
25He pulls it out of his back,
the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors will come over him;
26total darkness lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire unfanned will consume him
and devour what is left in his tent.
27The heavens will expose his guilt;
the earth will rise up against him.
28A flood will carry off his house,
rushing waters20:28 Or The possessions in his house will be carried off, / washed away on the day of God’s wrath.
29Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
the heritage appointed for them by God.’
Zofar
1Então Zofar, de Naamate, respondeu:
2“Agitam-se os meus pensamentos e levam-me a responder
porque estou profundamente perturbado.
3Ouvi uma repreensão que me desonra,
e o meu entendimento faz-me contestar.
4“Certamente você sabe que sempre foi assim,
desde a antiguidade;
desde que o homem20.4 Ou Adão foi posto na terra,
5o riso dos maus é passageiro,
e a alegria dos ímpios dura apenas um instante.
6Mesmo que o seu orgulho chegue aos céus
e a sua cabeça toque as nuvens,
7ele perecerá para sempre,
como o seu próprio excremento;
os que o tinham visto perguntarão:
‘Onde ele foi parar?’
8Ele voa e vai-se como um sonho,
para nunca mais ser encontrado,
banido como uma visão noturna.
9O olho que o viu não o verá mais,
nem o seu lugar o tornará a ver.
10Seus filhos terão que indenizar os pobres;
ele próprio, com suas mãos, terá que refazer sua riqueza.
11O vigor juvenil que enche os seus ossos
jazerá com ele no pó.
12“Mesmo que o mal seja doce em sua boca
e ele o esconda sob a língua,
13mesmo que o retenha na boca para saboreá-lo,
14ainda assim a sua comida azedará no estômago;
e será como veneno de cobra em seu interior.
15Ele vomitará as riquezas que engoliu;
Deus fará seu estômago lançá-las fora.
16Sugará veneno de cobra;
as presas de uma víbora o matarão.
17Não terá gosto na contemplação dos regatos
e dos rios que vertem mel e nata.
18Terá que devolver aquilo pelo que lutou, sem aproveitá-lo,
e não desfrutará dos lucros do seu comércio.
19Sim, pois ele tem oprimido os pobres
e os tem deixado desamparados;
apoderou-se de casas que não construiu.
20“Certo é que a sua cobiça não lhe trará descanso,
e o seu tesouro não o salvará.
21Nada lhe restou para devorar;
sua prosperidade não durará muito.
22Em meio à sua fartura, a aflição o dominará;
a força total da desgraça o atingirá.
23Quando ele estiver de estômago cheio,
Deus dará vazão às tremendas chamas de sua ira
e sobre ele despejará o seu furor.
24Se escapar da arma de ferro,
o bronze da sua flecha o atravessará.
25Ele a arrancará das suas costas,
a ponta reluzente saindo do seu fígado.
Grande pavor virá sobre ele;
26densas trevas estarão à espera dos seus tesouros.
Um fogo não assoprado o consumirá
e devorará o que sobrar em sua tenda.
27Os céus revelarão a sua culpa;
a terra se levantará contra ele.
28Uma inundação arrastará a sua casa,
águas avassaladoras20.28 Ou Os bens de sua casa serão levados, arrastados pelas águas,, no dia da ira de Deus.
29Esse é o destino que Deus dá aos ímpios,
é a herança designada por Deus para eles”.
