Seventy years of captivity
1The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 2So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah and to all those living in Jerusalem: 3For twenty-three years – from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day – the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.
4And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. 5They said, ‘Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. 6Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.’
7‘But you did not listen to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and you have aroused my anger with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves.’
8Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: ‘Because you have not listened to my words, 9I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy25:9 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them. them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin. 10I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamp. 11This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.
12‘But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,25:12 Or Chaldeans for their guilt,’ declares the Lord, ‘and will make it desolate for ever. 13I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14They themselves will be enslaved by many nations and great kings; I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.’
The cup of God’s wrath
15This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: ‘Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them.’ 17So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it:
18Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse25:18 That is, their names to be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, to be seen by others as cursed – as they are today;
19Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20and all the foreign people there;
all the kings of Uz;
all the kings of the Philistines (those of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);
21Edom, Moab and Ammon;
22all the kings of Tyre and Sidon;
the kings of the coastlands across the sea;
23Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who are in distant places25:23 Or who clip the hair by their foreheads;
24all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the foreign people who live in the wilderness;
25all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media;
26and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other – all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
And after all of them, the king of Sheshak25:26 Sheshak is a cryptogram for Babylon. will drink it too.
27‘Then tell them, “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.” 28But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, “This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the Lord Almighty.”
30‘Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:
‘ “The Lord will roar from on high;
he will thunder from his holy dwelling
and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread the grapes,
shout against all who live on the earth.
31The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth,
for the Lord will bring charges against the nations;
he will bring judgment on all mankind
and put the wicked to the sword,” ’
declares the Lord.
32This is what the Lord Almighty says:
‘Look! Disaster is spreading
from nation to nation;
a mighty storm is rising
from the ends of the earth.’
33At that time those slain by the Lord will be everywhere – from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.
34Weep and wail, you shepherds;
roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered has come;
you will fall like the best of the rams.25:34 Septuagint; Hebrew fall and be shattered like fine pottery
35The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
the leaders of the flock no place to escape.
36Hear the cry of the shepherds,
the wailing of the leaders of the flock,
for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37The peaceful meadows will be laid waste
because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38Like a lion he will leave his lair,
and their land will become desolate

and because of the Lord’s fierce anger.

Indi ninyo ako pagpaakiga sa mga dios-dios nga inyo lang ginhimo, agod indi ko kamo pagsilutan.”
7Pero wala gid kamo magpamati sa Ginoo. Ginpaakig gid ninyo siya paagi sa inyo ginhimo nga mga dios-dios. Gani kamo mismo ang nagdala sang silot sa inyo kaugalingon. 8Gani amo ini ang ginasiling sang Ginoo nga Makagagahom: “Tungod wala kamo magpamati sa akon mga mensahi, 9ipasalakay ko kamo sa mga katawhan sa aminhan nga ginapanguluhan sang akon alagad nga si Haring Nebucadnezar sang Babilonia. Salakayon nila ini nga duta kag ang tanan nga pumuluyo sini, pati ang tanan nga nasyon sa palibot sini. Laglagon ko kamo sing bug-os, kag maurungan gid ang mga tawo sa matabo sa inyo kag tamayon nila kamo. Huo, malaglag gid kamo hasta san-o. 10Indi na kamo magkinasadya ukon magkinalipay. Indi na mabatian ang pagkinasadya sang bag-ong kasal. Wala na sing may maggaling sang trigo ukon magpasiga sang suga kon gab-i. 11Mangin mamingaw ining bug-os nga duta. Ini nga nasyon kag ang mga nasyon sa palibot sini magaalagad sa hari sang Babilonia sa sulod sang 70 ka tuig.
12“Pero pagkatapos sang 70 ka tuig, silutan ko ang hari sang Babilonia kag ang iya katawhan tungod sa ila sala. Himuon ko man nga mamingaw ang ila nasyon hasta san-o. 13Ipaagom ko sa ila nasyon ang tanan nga butang nga ginhambal ko kontra sa ila kag sa iban nga mga nasyon, nga ginpanghambal ni Jeremias kag nasulat sa sini nga libro. 14Ulipunon sila sang madamo nga nasyon kag sang gamhanan nga mga hari. Silutan ko sila suno sa ila mga ginhimo.”
Ang Kupa nga Puno sang Kaakig sang Dios
15Nagsiling ang Ginoo, ang Dios sang Israel sa akon, “Kuhaa sa akon kamot ining kupa nga puno sang akon kaakig kag ipainom sa tanan nga nasyon nga sa diin ginapadala ko ikaw. 16Kon makainom sila sini, magaduling-duling sila nga daw sa buang tungod sa inaway nga ipadala ko sa ila.”
17Gani ginkuha ko ang kupa sa kamot sang Ginoo kag ginpainom sa tanan nga nasyon nga sa diin ginpadala niya ako. 18Ginpainom ko ang Jerusalem, kag ang mga banwa sang Juda, pati ang ila mga hari kag mga opisyal, agod malaglag sila. Maurungan gid ang mga tawo sa matabo sa ila. Tamayon sila kag pakamalauton, subong man sang ginahimo karon sa ila. 19Ginpainom ko man ang Faraon nga hari sang Egipto, ang iya mga opisyal, mga pangulo kag ang tanan niya nga katawhan, 20pati ang tanan nga indi Egiptohanon nga nagaestar didto. Ginpainom ko man ang mga hari kag mga katawhan sang masunod nga mga lugar: Uz, mga banwa sang Filistia (nga ang mga hari sini nagdumala sa Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, kag Ashdod), 21Edom, Moab, Ammon, 22Tyre, Sidon, mga lugar sa tabok sang dagat, 23Dedan, Tema, Buz, mga malayo nga lugar,25:23 mga malayo nga lugar: sa literal, ang mga nagapautod sang ila patilya. 24Arabia, mga tribo sa desierto, 25Zimri, Elam, Media, 26mga lugar sa aminhan, malayo man ukon malapit—ang tanan nga ginharian sa kalibutan. Kag ang katapusan amo ang Babilonia.
27Dayon nagsiling ang Ginoo sa akon, “Ihambal sa sini nga mga nasyon nga ako, ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom, ang Dios sang Israel, nagasiling: Sige, mag-inom kamo sa kupa sang akon kaakig hasta nga magkalahubog kamo, magsululuka, magkalatumba kag indi na makabangon pa, tungod kay padal-an ko kamo sang inaway.
28“Pero kon indi gani sila mag-inom, silinga sila nga ako, ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom, nagasiling: Kinahanglan nga mag-inom kamo! 29Tan-awa ninyo! Ginasuguran ko na ang pagpadala sang kalaglagan sa Jerusalem, ang siyudad nga akon ginpili para padunggan ako. Karon nagahunahuna bala kamo nga indi ko kamo pagsilutan? Silutan ko gid kamo! Kay paawayon ko ang tanan nga nasyon sa bug-os nga kalibutan. Ako, ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom, ang nagasiling sini.
30“Jeremias, isugid sa ila ang tanan ko nga ginsiling, kag silinga sila: Magangurob ang Ginoo halin sa langit; ang iya tingog magadaguob halin sa iya balaan nga puluy-an. Magangurob siya sing mabaskog sa iya katawhan. Magasinggit siya sa tanan nga nagaestar sa kalibutan pareho sang tawo nga nagasinggit samtang nagalinas sang ubas. 31Ang iya tingog mabatian sa bug-os nga kalibutan,25:31 bug-os nga kalibutan: sa literal, pinakapunta sang kalibutan. kay iakusar niya ang mga nasyon. Sentensyahan niya ang tanan nga katawhan, kag pamatyon ang mga malaot sa inaway. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagasiling sini.”
32Nagpadayon sa pagsiling ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom: “Mag-andam kamo! Ang kalaglagan magaabot sa nagkalain-lain nga mga nasyon pareho sang mabaskog nga bagyo nga halin sa pinakamalayo nga parte sang kalibutan.”
33Sa sina nga adlaw madamo ang pamatyon sang Ginoo, sa bagay nga ang mga bangkay magalalapta sa punta kag punta sang kalibutan. Wala gid sing may magpangasubo ukon magtipon ukon maglubong sa ila. Pabay-an lang sila pareho sang mga ipot sa palahalban.
34Kamo nga mga pangulo, maghibi kamo sing tudo kag magligid sa yab-ok sa pagpakita sang inyo pagpangasubo. Kay nag-abot na ang tion sa pagpatay sa inyo pareho sang pag-ihaw sang karnero. Malaglag kamo pareho sang espesyal nga kolon nga nabuka. 35Wala gid kamo sing lugar nga mapalagyuhan ukon madalaganan. 36Mabatian ang inyo mga paghibi kag pag-ugayong, kay ginlaglag sang Ginoo ang inyo katawhan. 37Ang mabuganaon nga palahalban mangin desierto tungod sa puwerte nga kaakig sang Ginoo. 38Pareho siya sang leon nga nagguwa sa iya palanaguan sa pagpangita sang tulukbon. Mangin mamingaw ang inyo duta tungod sa pagsalakay sang kaaway, kag tungod sa puwerte nga kaakig sang Ginoo.
