Joseph makes himself known
1Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, ‘Make everyone leave my presence!’ So there was no-one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. 2And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.
3Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph! Is my father still living?’ But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence.
4Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come close to me.’ When they had done so, he said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! 5And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. 6For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no ploughing and reaping. 7But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.45:7 Or save you as a great band of survivors
8‘So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. 9Now hurry back to my father and say to him, “This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay. 10You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me – you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. 11I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.”
12‘You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you. 13Tell my father about all the honour accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.’
14Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. 15And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterwards his brothers talked with him.
16When the news reached Pharaoh’s palace that Joseph’s brothers had come, Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. 17Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Tell your brothers, “Do this: load your animals and return to the land of Canaan, 18and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.”
19‘You are also instructed to tell them, “Do this: take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. 20Never mind about your belongings, because the best of all Egypt will be yours.” ’
21So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. 22To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels45:22 That is, about 3.5 kilograms of silver and five sets of clothes. 23And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey. 24Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, ‘Don’t quarrel on the way!’
25So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. 26They told him, ‘Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.’ Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them. 27But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28And Israel said, ‘I’m convinced! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.’

ヨセフと兄弟たちの和解
1ヨセフはもうこれ以上自制できなくなりました。「みな、下がっていなさい！」と大声で、そばで仕えている者たちに命じました。あとには、兄弟たちとヨセフだけが残りました。 2そのとたん、ヨセフはこらえきれなくなって、あたりはばからず泣きだしました。泣き声は屋敷中に聞こえ、その知らせがすぐ王宮にまで伝えられるほどでした。
3「兄さん、ヨセフですよ。ほら、よく見てください。お父さんは元気ですか。」びっくりしたのは兄弟たちです。あまりのことに口をきくこともできません。
4「さあ、そんな所にいないで、ここへ来てください。」そう言われて、彼らはそばに寄りました。
「お忘れですか。ヨセフですよ。あの、エジプトへ売られた弟ですよ。 5だけど、そのことで自分を責めないでください。神様のお取り計らいだったのです。私がここへ来るようにしたのも、ほんとうは兄さんたちでなく神様なのです。こんなふうに兄さんたちを助けることができるようにしてくださった。 6もうこれで丸二年もききんが続きましたが、まだまだ収まりません。あと五年はこのままです。その間は種まきもできないし、収穫もありません。 7それでも私たち一族が滅びず、やがて大きな国になることができるように、神様が先に私をここに遣わされたのです。 8ですから、決して兄さんたちのせいではありません。神様のお導きです。神様は私を王の顧問にし、この国の総理大臣にしてくださいました。 9さあ、急いでお父さんのところへ帰り、伝えてください。『ヨセフは無事で、こう申しております。「神様が私をエジプトの総理大臣にしてくださいました。すぐこちらへ来てください。 10ゴシェンの地に住んでいただきます。子どもや孫を引き連れ、家畜をはじめ全財産を持って来てください。そうすれば、また近くに住むことができます。 11-12いっさいの面倒は私が見ます。ききんはまだ五年も続くのですから、もしエジプトに来なければ、一族は飢え死にするしかありません。」』私にお任せください。約束します。兄さんたちが証人です。それにベニヤミンも。 13とにかくお父さんに、そう話してください。私がエジプトでどんな権限を与えられているか、何でも命令できる立場なのだということを伝えてください。お願いです。早くお父さんの顔が見たいのです。」
14こう言うと、ヨセフはベニヤミンを抱きしめて涙にくれました。ベニヤミンも泣きました。 15彼はほかの兄弟一人一人にも同じようにしました。その時になって、ようやく兄弟たちは口がきけるようになりました。
16やがて王に、「ヨセフの兄弟たちがエジプトに来られた」と知らされ、王も役人たちも喜びました。 17王はヨセフに言いました。「兄さんたちに伝えてくれ。荷物を家畜に載せて早くカナンの家へ帰り、 18改めてお父上と家族ともどもエジプトへ来るようにと。ぜひエジプトに住んでもらわねばならん。『王がエジプトで最良の土地を用意いたします。その土地の豊かな収穫で生活してください』と伝えるのだ。 19兄さんたちには、エジプトから荷馬車を持って行ってもらおう。婦人や子ども、ご高齢のお父上をお連れするのに役立つだろう。 20財産の心配はいらない。エジプトの最良の土地が手に入るのだから、置いて来ても惜しくはないだろう。」
21ヨセフは王の命によって、荷馬車と旅に必要な食糧を兄たちに与えました。 22一人一人に新しい服を渡し、ベニヤミンには特に五着も渡したうえに、銀貨三百枚を与えました。 23父親には、エジプトの珍しい産物を積んだろば十頭と、穀物や旅に必要な食糧を積んだ雌ろば十頭を贈り物としました。 24これで、すっかり準備は整いました。
「途中で言い争いなどしないでください」と、ヨセフは兄弟たちに言って送り出しました。 25こうして一行は出発し、カナンにいる父ヤコブのもとへ帰りました。
26「お父さん！ ヨセフが、ヨセフが生きていたのです。それも驚くではありませんか、エジプトの総理大臣なのです！」一同は、帰るとすぐさま父のところへ飛んで行き、勢い込んで知らせたのに、ヤコブはうれしそうな顔ひとつしません。今さらそんなことが、どうして信じられるでしょう。 27しかし、細かく話を聞くと、どうもほんとうらしいのです。ヨセフの言づても聞きました。それに、エジプトに迎えるために送ってよこした荷馬車も見ました。夢ではないのです。父のヤコブは急に元気が出てきました。 28「ほんとうだ。間違いない。ヨセフは生きている。私は行くぞ。死ぬ前にどうしてもひと目会いたい。」
