The priesthood restored
1Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east, and it was shut. 2The Lord said to me, ‘This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no-one may enter through it. It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. 3The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.’
4Then the man brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple of the Lord, and I fell face down.
5The Lord said to me, ‘Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary. 6Say to rebellious Israel, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! 7In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant. 8Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary. 9This is what the Sovereign Lord says: no foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.
10‘ “The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin. 11They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them. 12But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord. 13They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame of their detestable practices. 14And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.
15‘ “But the Levitical priests, who are descendants of Zadok and who guarded my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, are to come near to minister before me; they are to stand before me to offer sacrifices of fat and blood, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16They alone are to enter my sanctuary; they alone are to come near my table to minister before me and serve me as guards.
17‘ “When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen clothes; they must not wear any woollen garment while ministering at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple. 18They are to wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments round their waists. They must not wear anything that makes them perspire. 19When they go out into the outer court where the people are, they are to take off the clothes they have been ministering in and leave them in the sacred rooms, and put on other clothes, so that the people are not consecrated through contact with their garments.
20‘ “They must not shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed. 21No priest is to drink wine when he enters the inner court. 22They must not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of Israelite descent or widows of priests. 23They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.
24‘ “In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals, and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.
25‘ “A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself. 26After he is cleansed, he must wait seven days. 27On the day he goes into the inner court of the sanctuary to minister in the sanctuary, he is to offer a sin offering44:27 Or purification offering; also in verse 29 for himself, declares the Sovereign Lord.
28‘ “I am to be the only inheritance the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession. 29They will eat the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings; and everything in Israel devoted44:29 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord. to the Lord will belong to them. 30The best of all the firstfruits and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal so that a blessing may rest on your household. 31The priests must not eat anything, whether bird or animal, found dead or torn by wild animals.
Deberes de levitas y sacerdotes
1El hombre me hizo regresar por la puerta exterior del Templo, la que daba al oriente, pero estaba cerrada. 2Allí el Señor me dijo: «Esta puerta quedará cerrada. No se abrirá y nadie deberá entrar por ella. Deberá quedar cerrada porque por ella ha entrado el Señor, Dios de Israel. 3Tan solo el príncipe podrá sentarse junto a la puerta para comer en presencia del Señor. Deberá entrar por el vestíbulo de la puerta y salir por el mismo lugar».
Los levitas
4Después el hombre me llevó por el camino de la puerta del norte, que está frente al Templo. Al ver que la gloria del Señor llenaba el Templo, me postré rostro en tierra.
5Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Hijo de hombre, presta mucha atención. Abre bien los ojos y escucha atentamente todo lo que voy a decirte sobre los estatutos y las leyes concernientes al Templo. Fíjate bien en quiénes pueden entrar al santuario y quiénes no. 6Adviértele a este pueblo rebelde de Israel que así dice el Señor y Dios: “Pueblo de Israel, ¡basta ya de tus abominaciones! 7Ustedes dejaron entrar en mi santuario a extranjeros, incircuncisos de corazón y de cuerpo, para que profanaran mi Templo. Mientras tanto, ustedes me ofrecían alimentos, grasa y sangre, violando así mi pacto con todas sus abominaciones. 8En lugar de cumplir con su deber respecto de mis cosas santas, pusieron a extranjeros a cargo de mi santuario. 9Así dice el Señor y Dios: ¡No entrará en mi santuario ningún extranjero incircunciso de corazón y de cuerpo; ni siquiera los extranjeros que habitan entre los israelitas!
10»”Tendrán que pagar por su iniquidad los levitas que se alejaron de mí cuando Israel se descarriaba para ir tras sus ídolos. 11Podrán ministrar en mi santuario como custodios de las puertas y en algunos otros menesteres del Templo. Ellos serán los que maten los animales para el holocausto y para el sacrificio que presenta el pueblo; deberán estar dispuestos a servirlo. 12Pero por haber servido al pueblo de Israel delante de sus ídolos y, además, por haber sido piedra de tropiezo, tendrán que pagar por su iniquidad. He jurado solemnemente con la mano en alto que deben recibir la consecuencia de sus pecados. Yo, el Señor y Dios, lo afirmo. 13No podrán acercarse a mí para servir como sacerdotes ni se acercarán a mis objetos sagrados; menos aún, a los objetos santísimos. Tendrán que cargar con la vergüenza de las abominaciones que han cometido. 14Sin embargo, los pondré a cargo de la custodia del Templo y de todo el servicio y el trabajo que se deba cumplir en él.
15»”En cambio, se acercarán para ministrar delante de mí los sacerdotes levitas descendientes de Sadoc, que estuvieron al servicio de mi santuario cuando los israelitas se descarriaban de mí; y se presentarán ante mí para ofrecerme la grasa y la sangre. Yo, el Señor y Dios, lo afirmo. 16Solo ellos entrarán en mi santuario y podrán acercarse a mi mesa para ministrar delante de mí y encargarse de sus deberes.
17»”Y, cuando entren por la puerta del atrio interior, se pondrán vestiduras de tela de lino. Cuando estén ministrando a las puertas del atrio interior o en el Templo, no llevarán ropa de lana. 18Llevarán turbantes de tela de lino sobre la cabeza, y alrededor de la cintura usarán ropa interior de tela de lino. No se pondrán nada en la cintura que los haga transpirar. 19Y cuando salgan al atrio exterior donde está el pueblo, deberán quitarse la ropa con la que hayan ministrado y dejarla en las salas sagradas. Luego se cambiarán de ropa, a fin de no consagrar al pueblo por medio de sus vestiduras.
20»”No se afeitarán la cabeza, pero tampoco se dejarán largo el cabello, sino que se lo recortarán prolijamente.
21»”Ningún sacerdote deberá beber vino cuando entre en el atrio interior.
22»”No deberá casarse con una viuda o una divorciada, sino solo con una israelita que aún sea virgen o con la viuda de un sacerdote.
23»”Deberán enseñarle a mi pueblo a distinguir entre lo sagrado y lo profano, y mostrarle cómo diferenciar entre lo puro y lo impuro.
24»”En cualquier pleito, los sacerdotes servirán como jueces y juzgarán según mis leyes. En todas mis fiestas observarán mis ordenanzas y mis estatutos; deberán santificar mis sábados.
25»”El sacerdote no deberá acercarse a un cadáver para no contaminarse. Pero si el cadáver es de su propio padre o madre, hijo o hija, hermano o hermana soltera, entonces sí podrá contaminarse. 26Si queda contaminado, deberá purificarse y luego esperar siete días. 27El día en que vuelva a entrar en el atrio interior del santuario para ministrar, deberá ofrecer su sacrificio por el pecado, afirma el Señor y Dios.
28»”Los sacerdotes no tendrán ninguna heredad, porque su heredad soy yo. Ustedes no les darán ninguna propiedad en Israel. Su propiedad soy yo. 29Ellos se alimentarán de la ofrenda de cereal, la ofrenda por el pecado y la ofrenda por la culpa. Además, todo lo que los israelitas consagren al Señor será para ellos. 30También recibirán lo mejor de todas las primicias y de todas las ofrendas que ustedes presenten. Darán a los sacerdotes, para su pan, las primicias de la molienda. Así mi bendición reposará sobre los hogares de ustedes. 31Los sacerdotes no comerán ningún animal, sea ave o bestia, que sea encontrado muerto o despedazado por una fiera.
