At Mount Sinai
1On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt – on that very day – they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.
3Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, ‘This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4“You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6you19:5,6 Or possession, for the whole earth is mine. 6 You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.’
7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak. 8The people all responded together, ‘We will do everything the Lord has said.’ So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.
9The Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.’ Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.
10And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Make them wash their clothes 11and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, “Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. 13They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.” Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.’
14After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. 15Then he said to the people, ‘Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations.’
16On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. 17Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain19:18 Most Hebrew manuscripts; a few Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint and all the people trembled violently. 19As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.19:19 Or and God answered him with thunder
20The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21and the Lord said to him, ‘Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish. 22Even the priests, who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.’
23Moses said to the Lord, ‘The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, “Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.” ’
24The Lord replied, ‘Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.’
25So Moses went down to the people and told them.
Sa Bundok ng Sinai
1-2Umalis ang mga Israelita sa Refidim at pumunta sa ilang ng Sinai. Doon sa harap ng bundok sila nagkampo. Ikatlong buwan ito mula nang lisanin nila ang Egipto.
3Umakyat si Moises sa bundok para makipagkita sa Dios. Tinawag siya ng Panginoon doon sa bundok at sinabi, “Sabihin mo ito sa mga Israelita na mga lahi ni Jacob: 4‘Nakita nʼyo mismo kung ano ang ginawa ko sa mga Egipcio, at kung paano ko kayo dinala rito sa akin, katulad ng pagdadala ng agila sa mga inakay niya sa pamamagitan ng kanyang pakpak. 5Kung lubos ninyo akong susundin at tutuparin ang aking kasunduan, pipiliin ko kayo sa lahat ng bansa para maging mga mamamayan ko. Akin ang buong mundo, 6pero magiging pinili ko kayong mamamayan at magiging isang kaharian ng mga paring maglilingkod sa akin.’ Sabihin mo ito sa mga Israelita.”
7Kaya bumaba si Moises mula sa bundok at ipinatawag niya ang mga tagapamahala ng Israel at sinabi sa kanila ang sinabi ng Panginoon. 8At sabay-sabay na sumagot ang mga tao, “Susundin namin ang lahat ng sinabi ng Panginoon.” At sinabi ni Moises sa Panginoon ang sagot ng mga tao.
9Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Moises, “Darating ako sa iyo sa pamamagitan ng makapal na ulap para marinig ng mga tao ang pakikipag-usap ko sa iyo, at nang lagi silang magtiwala sa iyo.” At sinabi ni Moises sa Panginoon ang sagot ng mga tao.
10At sinabi sa kanya ng Panginoon, “Puntahan mo ang mga tao at sabihin sa kanilang linisin ang sarili nila19:10 linisin ang sarili nila: Ang ibig sabihin, kailangan nilang sundin ang seremonya para maging malinis. ngayon at bukas. Kailangang labhan nila ang kanilang mga damit. 11Siguraduhing handa sila sa ikatlong araw, dahil sa araw na iyon, ako, ang Panginoon ay bababa sa Bundok ng Sinai na kitang-kita ng mga tao. 12Maglagay ka ng tanda sa paligid ng bundok kung hanggang saan lamang tatayo ang mga tao. Sabihin mo sa kanila na huwag silang aakyat o lalapit sa bundok. Ang sinumang lalapit sa bundok ay papatayin, 13tao man o hayop. Kung gagawin niya ito, babatuhin siya o kaya naman ay papanain; walang kamay na hihipo sa kanya. Makakaakyat lang ang mga tao sa bundok kapag pinatunog na nang matagal ang tambuli.”
14Bumaba si Moises sa bundok at inutusan niya silang linisin ang mga sarili nila. At nilabhan ng mga tao ang kanilang mga damit. 15Sinabi ni Moises sa kanila, “Ihanda ninyo ang mga sarili ninyo para sa ikatlong araw; huwag muna kayong makipagtalik sa inyong asawa.”
16Kinaumagahan ng ikatlong araw, kumulog at kumidlat, at may makapal na ulap na tumakip sa bundok at narinig ang malakas na tunog ng trumpeta. Nanginig sa takot ang lahat ng tao sa kampo. 17Pagkatapos, dinala ni Moises sa labas ng kampo ang mga tao para makipagkita sa Dios, at tumayo sila sa paanan ng bundok. 18Nabalot ng usok ang Bundok ng Sinai dahil bumaba roon ang Panginoon sa anyo ng apoy. Pumaitaas ang usok kagaya ng usok na nanggaling sa hurno at nayanig nang malakas ang bundok,19:18 nayanig nang malakas ang bundok: sa ibang kopya ng Hebreo at Septuagint, nanginig ang lahat ng tao. 19at lalo pang lumakas ang tunog ng trumpeta. Nagsalita si Moises at sinagot siya ng Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng kulog.19:19 sa pamamagitan ng kulog: o, sa malakas na boses.
20Bumaba ang Panginoon sa ibabaw ng Bundok ng Sinai, at tinawag niya si Moises na umakyat sa ibabaw ng bundok. Kaya umakyat si Moises, 21at sinabi sa kanya ng Panginoon, “Bumalik ka sa ibaba at balaan mo sila na huwag na huwag silang lalampas sa hangganan na inilagay sa paligid ng bundok para tingnan ako, dahil kung gagawin nila ito, marami sa kanila ang mamamatay. 22Kahit na ang mga pari na palaging lumalapit sa presensya koʼy kailangang maglinis ng kanilang mga sarili dahil kung hindi, parurusahan ko rin sila.”
23Sinabi ni Moises sa Panginoon, “Paano po aakyat ang mga tao sa bundok gayong binigyan nʼyo na kami ng babala na ituring naming banal ang bundok, at sinabihan nʼyo kaming lagyan ng tanda ang paligid ng bundok kung hanggang saan lang kami tatayo.”
24Sinabi sa kanya ng Panginoon, “Bumaba ka at dalhin si Aaron dito. Pero ang mga pari at ang mga tao ay hindi dapat pumunta rito sa akin, para hindi ko sila parusahan.”
25Kaya bumaba si Moises at sinabihan ang mga tao.
