The plague on the firstborn
1Now the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. 2Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbours for articles of silver and gold.’ 3(The Lord made the Egyptians favourably disposed towards the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh’s officials and by the people.)
4So Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord says: “About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand-mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt – worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.” Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. 8All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, “Go, you and all the people who follow you!” After that I will leave.’ Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.
9The Lord had said to Moses, ‘Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you – so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt.’ 10Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.

最後の災いの予告
1ついに主はモーセに命じました。「いよいよ、これが最後だ。ファラオとエジプト人たちを徹底的に打つのだ。そのあとでファラオはようやく、あなたがたの出発を認めるだろう。いや、むしろ早く出て行かせたくて追い立てるだろう。 2その時は、遠慮はいらない。エジプト人の隣人に金や銀の高価な飾り物を要求するのだ。今からその心備えをしておくよう、イスラエル人全員に伝えなさい。」
3これは、エジプト人がイスラエル人に好意を示すよう、主が計ったからです。モーセ自身、エジプトではファラオの家臣や国民に尊敬されていました。
4モーセはファラオに宣言しました。「主はこう言われます。『真夜中ごろ、わたしはエジプトを通り過ぎる。 5その時、王位を継承する王子から奴隷の長男に至るまで、エジプトの家々の長男はみな死ぬ。家畜の初子も同じだ。 6嘆き声が全土に響き渡るだろう。いまだかつてなかったような、これからも二度とないような悲痛な叫びだ。 7しかし、イスラエル人とその家畜には犬がほえることすらない。こうして、エジプト人とイスラエル人とははっきり区別される。』 8あなたの家臣たちはその時、私のところに来てひれ伏し、『どうか今すぐ出て行ってください。イスラエル人は一人残らず連れ出してください』と言うでしょう。そのあと私は出て行きます。」
モーセは怒りに燃え、言うべきことを言うと、宮殿から出て行きました。
9モーセは、前もって主から言われていました。「ファラオはあなたの言うことを聞き入れないだろう。そのため、わたしは大きな奇跡を行い、わたしの力を十分示すようになる。」 10そういうわけで、モーセとアロンが数々の奇跡をファラオの目の前で行ったにもかかわらず、神はファラオの心をかたくななままにしておかれ、イスラエル人の出国をなかなか許そうとはしなかったのです。
