1‘Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defence.’
2When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet.
Then Paul said: 3‘I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. 4I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, 5as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6‘About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. 7I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, “Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?”
8‘ “Who are you, Lord?” I asked.
‘ “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 9My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.
10‘ “What shall I do, Lord?” I asked.
‘ “Get up,” the Lord said, “and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.” 11My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.
12‘A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13He stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight!” And at that very moment I was able to see him.
14‘Then he said: “The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptised and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”
17‘When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18and saw the Lord speaking to me. “Quick!” he said. “Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.”
19‘ “Lord,” I replied, “these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20And when the blood of your martyr22:20 Or witness Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.”
21‘Then the Lord said to me, “Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.” ’
Paul the Roman citizen
22The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, ‘Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!’
23As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, ‘Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?’
26When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. ‘What are you going to do?’ he asked. ‘This man is a Roman citizen.’
27The commander went to Paul and asked, ‘Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?’
‘Yes, I am,’ he answered.
28Then the commander said, ‘I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.’
‘But I was born a citizen,’ Paul replied.
29Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realised that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
Paul before the Sanhedrin
30The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews. So the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and set him before them.
Het verhaal van Paulus
1‘Broeders en vaders,’ zei hij, ‘luister naar wat ik tot mijn verdediging te zeggen heb.’ 2Toen zij hoorden dat hij hen in het Hebreeuws toesprak, waren ze een en al aandacht. 3‘Ik ben een Jood,’ ging Paulus verder, ‘geboren in Tarsus, in Cilicië. Maar ik ben hier in Jeruzalem grootgebracht. Ik heb gestudeerd bij de beroemde Gamaliël. Hij heeft mij de wet van onze voorouders tot in de kleinste bijzonderheden ingeprent. Ik stond voor God op de bres, even vurig als u vandaag. 4Ik heb de aanhangers van die nieuwe leer vervolgd en gedood. Zowel mannen als vrouwen heb ik geboeid naar de gevangenis gebracht. 5De hogepriester en de gehele Hoge Raad zijn mijn getuigen. Zij hebben mij zelfs brieven meegegeven voor de Joodse leiders in Damascus. Ik ben daarheen gereisd om christenen op te sporen en geboeid naar Jeruzalem te brengen, zodat zij gestraft konden worden.
6Toen ik op weg was naar Damascus en midden op de dag de stad naderde, werd ik plotseling omstraald door een felle lichtbundel, die uit de hemel kwam. 7Ik viel op de grond en hoorde iemand tegen mij zeggen: “Saul, Saul, waarom vervolgt u Mij?” 8“Wie bent U, Here?” vroeg ik. 9“Ik ben de Jezus van Nazareth, die u vervolgt,” was het antwoord. De mannen die bij mij waren, zagen wel het licht, maar verstonden de stem niet. 10“Wat moet ik doen, Here?” vroeg ik. En de Here antwoordde: “Sta op en ga de stad in. Daar zal u worden verteld wat er allemaal voor u geregeld is en wat u moet doen.” 11Omdat ik door dat felle licht blind geworden was, moesten mijn reisgenoten mij aan de hand Damascus binnenleiden. 12Daar kwam een zekere Ananias naar mij toe. Hij was een gelovig man die zich stipt hield aan de wet van Mozes en bij de Joden van Damascus hoog in aanzien stond. 13“Saul, broeder,” zei hij, terwijl hij bij me stond, “kijk eens omhoog.” Ik keek op en kon weer zien! Mijn ogen waren weer goed. 14Hij zei: “De God van onze voorouders heeft u al van tevoren aangewezen om zijn wil te kennen, om de Rechtvaardige te zien en te horen spreken. 15Want u zult zijn getuige zijn en alle mensen vertellen wat u hebt gezien en gehoord. 16Nu, wat aarzelt u nog? Sta op en laat u dopen. Laat uw zonden afwassen en roep daarbij de Here aan.”
17Later ging ik naar Jeruzalem terug. Toen ik op een dag in de tempel aan het bidden was, raakte ik buiten mijzelf en zag ik de Here. 18“Vlug,” zei Hij, “maak dat u uit Jeruzalem wegkomt! Want de mensen in deze stad zullen niets willen weten van wat u over Mij vertelt.” 19“Ja, Here,” antwoordde ik. “Zij weten maar al te goed dat ik de synagogen ben langsgegaan en de mensen die in U geloofden, heb gevangengezet en geslagen. Toen uw getuige Stefanus werd vermoord, stond ik erbij. 20Ik stemde ermee in en paste zelfs op de kleren van zijn moordenaars.” 21De Here zei: “Ga nu! Ik zal u ver weg sturen, naar vreemde volken.” ’ 22Toen Paulus dat zei, begonnen de mensen die hem tot zover hadden aangehoord, luid te protesteren. ‘Weg met die man!’ schreeuwden zij. 23‘Hoe eerder hij dood is, hoe beter!’ Ze zwaaiden met hun mantels en gooiden handenvol stof de lucht in.
24De commandant liet Paulus het fort binnenbrengen en gaf zijn soldaten bevel hem met zweepslagen tot een bekentenis te dwingen. Want hij wilde precies weten waarom het volk zo woedend was op Paulus. 25Terwijl zij Paulus voorover bogen en vastbonden, vroeg hij aan de officier die erbij stond: ‘Mag u zonder enige vorm van proces zomaar een Romein zweepslagen geven?’ 26De officier ging naar de commandant en zei: ‘Wat gaat u doen? Die man is een Romein!’ 27De commandant kwam naar Paulus toe en zei: ‘Zeg, bent u Romein?’ ‘Inderdaad,’ zei Paulus.
28‘Ik heb het Romeinse burgerschap voor veel geld gekocht,’ zei de commandant. ‘Maar ik ben Romein van geboorte,’ antwoordde Paulus. 29De soldaten die Paulus hardhandig zouden verhoren, lieten hem onmiddellijk los. De commandant zelf werd ongerust toen hij begreep dat hij een Romein had laten boeien. 30Omdat de commandant precies wilde weten waarvan de Joden Paulus beschuldigden, riep hij de volgende dag de leidende priesters en de gehele Hoge Raad bijeen. Hij liet Paulus uit de gevangenis halen en leidde hem voor.
