Awaiting the new body
1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
6Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7For we live by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due to us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
The ministry of reconciliation
11Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13If we are ‘out of our mind,’ as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16So from now on we regard no-one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:5:17 Or Christ, that person is a new creation. the old has gone, the new is here! 18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: be reconciled to God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin5:21 Or be a sin offering for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
God geeft een heel nieuw leven
1Wij weten dat als ons lichaam sterft, wij een nieuw huis in de hemel krijgen, waar wij altijd mogen wonen. Dat is een huis door God gemaakt en niet door mensen. 2Wij ervaren nu nog wel allerlei moeilijkheden, maar kijken met verlangen uit naar de dag dat wij een hemels lichaam krijgen en dat zullen aantrekken zoals je nieuwe kleren aantrekt. 3Wanneer we ons aardse lichaam hebben afgelegd, zullen wij niet geheel zonder lichaam zijn. 4In ons aardse lichaam hebben wij het vaak moeilijk, maar wij zouden het vreselijk vinden om geen lichaam meer te hebben. Wij willen vanuit ons oude lichaam in ons nieuwe lichaam overgaan, zodat het sterfelijke door het leven wordt opgeslokt. 5Daarvoor heeft God ons juist gemaakt en als onderpand heeft Hij ons de Heilige Geest gegeven.
6Wij houden dus moed en beseffen heel goed dat wij nog ver van ons hemelse huis verwijderd zijn, zolang we in ons lichaam leven. 7Door het geloof en niet door het zien, weten wij dat dit waar is. 8Daarom zijn wij ook niet bang om te sterven; integendeel, wij zien ernaar uit om naar huis te gaan, naar de Here. 9Daarom is ons hoogste doel: doen wat Hij wil, of we nu in dit lichaam of thuis bij de Here zijn. 10Want wij zullen allemaal eens voor Christus rekenschap moeten afleggen. Dan wordt alles blootgelegd. Ieder van ons zal krijgen wat hem toekomt, voor wat hij in zijn aardse lichaam heeft gedaan, goed of kwaad.
11Omdat wij zoʼn diep ontzag voor de Here hebben, doen wij ons best anderen voor Hem te winnen. God weet dat wij hierin oprecht zijn en ik hoop van harte dat dat ook voor u duidelijk is. 12Proberen wij nu onszelf weer aan te prijzen? Nee, ik reik u alleen maar de argumenten aan, waarmee u ons kunt verdedigen tegen hen die het uiterlijk belangrijker vinden dan het innerlijk. In elk geval kunt u van ons zeggen dat wij eerlijk en oprecht zijn. 13Als wij in vervoering zijn, is het voor God. Als wij nuchter en kalm zijn, is het voor u. 14Wat wij ook doen, het is omdat we er door de liefde van Christus toe gedrongen worden. 15Als wij geloven dat Christus voor ons allen gestorven is, moeten wij ook geloven dat wij, wat ons oude leven betreft, gestorven zijn. Hij is gestorven, opdat allen die van Hem eeuwig leven kregen, niet langer voor zichzelf zullen leven, maar voor Christus, die voor hen gestorven en weer levend geworden is.
16Houd er dus mee op gelovigen naar hun uiterlijk te beoordelen of naar wat men over hen zegt. Ik heb zelf de fout gemaakt zo over Christus te denken en Hem alleen als een mens te beschouwen. Maar dat is nu wel anders! 17Als u christen wordt, wordt u van binnen helemaal nieuw. U bent als het ware opnieuw door God geschapen. Er is een heel nieuw leven begonnen. 18Al dit nieuwe komt van God, die ons door Jezus Christus bij Zichzelf heeft teruggebracht. Hij heeft ons opgedragen overal te vertellen dat iedereen het nu met God in orde kan maken. 19Door Christus herstelde God zijn relatie met de wereld, Hij rekende de mensen hun zonden niet meer toe, maar wiste ze uit. En wij mogen dit geweldige nieuws aan iedereen vertellen. 20Wij zijn boodschappers van Christus. God doet door ons een beroep op u. Wij smeken u namens Christus: laat het in orde komen tussen God en u! 21Want God nam Christus, die geen zonde gedaan had, en belastte Hem met onze zonden. In ruil daarvoor rekent God de rechtvaardigheid van Christus aan ons toe.
