Intelligibility in worship
1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue14:2 Or in another language; also in verses 4, 13, 14, 19, 26 and 27 does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no-one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 3But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,14:5 Or in other languages; also in verses 6, 18, 22, 23 and 39 but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,14:5 Or in other languages; also in verses 6, 18, 22, 23 and 39 unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.
6Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.
13For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an enquirer,14:16 The Greek word for enquirer is a technical term for someone not fully initiated into a religion; also in verses 23 and 24. say ‘Amen’ to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17You are giving thanks well enough, but no-one else is edified.
18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21In the Law it is written:
‘With other tongues
and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
but even then they will not listen to me,
says the Lord.’14:21 Isaiah 28:11,12
22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and enquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or an enquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, ‘God is really among you!’
Good order in worship
26What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27If anyone speaks in a tongue, two – or at the most three – should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.
29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace – as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.
34Women14:33,34 Or peace. As in all the congregations of the Lord’s people, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35If they want to enquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.14:34,35 In a few manuscripts these verses come after verse 40.
36Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.14:38 Some manuscripts But anyone who is ignorant of this will be ignorant
39Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
Os dons de profecia e de línguas
1Que o amor seja o vosso fundamental objetivo; mas aspirem também com zelo aos dons que o Espírito Santo vos dá, especialmente o dom de profetizar. 2Aquele que fala línguas fala com Deus, mas não com os outros, visto que os outros não poderão entendê-lo. É verdade que poderá estar a falar pelo poder do Espírito, mas será como algo misterioso. 3Aquele que profetizar estará a ajudar os outros a crescerem no Senhor, consolando-os e encorajando-os. 4Uma pessoa que fala línguas estará a ajudar-se a si própria a crescer espiritualmente, mas aquele que profetiza ajuda toda a igreja a crescer.
5Gostaria que todos falassem línguas, mas muito mais ainda que todos fossem capacitados a profetizar, porque isso tem mais importância do que falar línguas desconhecidas, a não ser que alguém interprete o que está a ser dito, para que os outros possam obter algum proveito espiritual.
6Queridos irmãos, ainda que eu próprio viesse ter convosco falando-vos numa língua que não percebessem, como poderia ajudar-vos? Mas se vos disser com toda a simplicidade o que Deus me revelou, algum conhecimento, uma profecia, isso poderá ajudar-vos. 7Até os instrumentos de música, a flauta, por exemplo, ou a harpa, demonstram a necessidade de que tudo o que se exprime seja com clareza, com nitidez. Ninguém reconhecerá a melodia que o instrumento estiver a tocar, se cada nota não soar com clareza. 8E se no exército o corneteiro não tocar as notas certas, como é que os soldados saberão que estão a ser chamados para a batalha? 9De igual forma, se falarmos com alguém numa linguagem que ele não perceba, como há de saber o que lhe estão a dizer? Seria a mesma coisa que falar numa sala sem ninguém.
10Suponho que haverá centenas de línguas diferentes neste mundo e que todas elas exprimem bem o pensamento daqueles que as falam. 11Mas se eu não souber o sentido daquilo que dizem, alguém que me fale numa dessas línguas será sempre para mim um estrangeiro, assim como eu para ele. 12Visto que desejam ter dons do Espírito Santo, peçam para ter os que serão de real utilidade para toda a igreja.
13Se a alguém é concedido o dom de falar línguas desconhecidas, deve também orar para que lhe seja dado o dom de interpretação, a fim de que possa depois transmitir explicitamente aos outros o que estava a falar. 14Porque se eu orar em línguas, o meu espírito está a orar, mas no meu pensamento não sei o que estou a dizer.
15Pois bem, que devo então fazer? As duas coisas: orarei no Espírito e orarei com palavras que eu entendo; cantarei no Espírito e cantarei com palavras que eu entendo. 16Porque se louvarem a Deus de uma forma espiritual, sem que o entendimento acompanhe o que estão a dizer numa língua desconhecida, como é que aqueles que estão presentes vos podem acompanhar no louvor a Deus, se não sabem o que vocês estão a dizer? 17Podem até estar a dizer coisas muito belas, mas que não serão de ajuda nenhuma para quem ali está.
18Eu dou graças a Deus porque falo em outras línguas mais do que qualquer um de vocês. 19Mas num culto público preferiria muito mais dizer uma frase apenas, cinco palavras que fosse, mas que todos compreendessem e que a todos ajudasse, do que fazer um discurso de milhares de palavras numa língua desconhecida.
20Queridos irmãos, não sejam infantis quanto à compreensão destas coisas. Quando se trata de imaginar o mal, nessa altura sim, convém que sejam como meninos inocentes; mas procurem entender as coisas desta natureza com a maturidade de pessoas adultas. 21As Escrituras dizem-nos:
“Enviarei homens de outra língua
a falar por lábios estranhos a este povo, diz o Senhor,
mas mesmo assim não quererão ouvir.”14.21 Is 28.11, 12.
22Veem então que o falar outras línguas pode ser um sinal para os descrentes. Enquanto que o profetizar é para os crentes. 23Com efeito, se um descrente vem à igreja e vos ouve falar noutras línguas, poderá pensar que estão todos fora do seu perfeito juízo. 24Mas se estiverem a profetizar e um estranho entrar na igreja, ou alguém que ainda não compreenda tudo, tem a possibilidade de ser convencido e a sua consciência será sensibilizada por tudo aquilo que ouvir. 25À medida que for ouvindo, os seus pensamentos mais íntimos serão postos a nu perante Deus e no seu espírito prostrar-se-á perante o Senhor, adorando-o e confessando que Deus está na verdade no vosso meio.
Ordem nas reuniões da igreja
26Pois bem, irmãos, resumamos o que já se disse. Quando se reúnem, um canta um hino, outro tem um ensinamento, um outro tem algo especial que Deus lhe revelou, outro fala numa língua desconhecida, enquanto outro interpreta o que foi dito por aquele. Mas tudo o que for feito deve ser de utilidade para todos e seu crescimento no Senhor. 27Não deveriam falar mais do que dois ou três em línguas desconhecidas, e que fale um de cada vez, havendo sempre alguém para interpretar. 28Mas se não houver ninguém que interprete, devem ficar em silêncio, na reunião da igreja, e falar só entre si e Deus.
29Também dois ou três profetas podem falar a mensagem de Deus, cada um por sua vez, se tiverem o dom para tal, enquanto os outros devem ouvir atentamente. 30E se, enquanto alguém está a transmitir a palavra de Deus, outra pessoa receber uma revelação do Senhor, aquele que está a falar deve terminar. 31Assim, todos os que têm uma profecia podem falar, mas um após o outro; dessa forma todos aprenderão e serão ajudados. 32Lembrem-se de que uma pessoa que profetiza deve ser capaz de se conter a si próprio e de esperar pela sua vez. 33Deus não pode aceitar a desordem. Deus ama a harmonia e é isso que deseja encontrar em todas as igrejas.
34As mulheres devem ficar em silêncio durante as reuniões na igreja. Não devem tomar parte nas discussões. Sejam submissas, tal como mandam as Escrituras. 35Se tiverem questões a apresentar que o façam aos maridos em casa; não é próprio para as mulheres falarem nos cultos da igreja.
36Será que pensam que o conhecimento da palavra de Deus começa e acaba unicamente em vocês, coríntios? 37Se alguém julga ser profeta e ter outras capacidades da parte do Espírito Santo deveria ser o primeiro a perceber que aquilo que estou a dizer é um mandamento da parte do Senhor. 38Mas se alguém continuar a discordar não temos mais do que deixá-lo na sua ignorância.
39Portanto, meus irmãos na fé, procurem ansiosamente profetizar e não impeçam alguém de falar noutras línguas. 40Certifiquem-se de que tudo é feito com ordem e sempre da forma mais conveniente.
