1Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

Appointing Elders Who Love What Is Good
5The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint1:5 Or ordain elders in every town, as I directed you. 6An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe1:6 Or children are trustworthy and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
Rebuking Those Who Fail to Do Good
10For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. 11They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”1:12 From the Cretan philosopher Epimenides 13This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith 14and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth. 15To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
1Esta carta é escrita por Paulo, servo de Deus e apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, para trazer à fé aqueles que Deus escolheu, e para lhes dar a conhecer a verdade que os conduz a uma vida de piedade, 2e que faz nascer a esperança da vida eterna, a qual Deus, que não mente, prometeu desde os tempos de origem de tudo. 3E agora, no tempo próprio, essas boas novas foram dadas a conhecer através da pregação que me foi confiada por ordem de Deus nosso Salvador.
4A Tito, que é para mim um verdadeiro filho espiritual, pois que lhe comuniquei a fé que nos é comum, desejo que lhe seja concedida graça, misericórdia e paz da parte de Deus Pai e da do Senhor Jesus Cristo, nosso Salvador.
A tarefa de Tito em Creta
5Quando te deixei em Creta foi para que pusesses em ordem as questões que ficaram em suspenso e que em cada localidade estabelecesses anciãos, segundo as instruções que te tinha dado. 6Devem ser escolhidos homens irrepreensíveis, casados com uma só mulher; que os seus filhos sejam crentes e não tenham fama de dissolutos, nem de desobedientes. 7Convém, com efeito, que o líder seja irrepreensível, visto que é um responsável da casa de Deus. Não deve ser altivo, nem irritar-se facilmente; não deve ser dado a bebidas alcoólicas, nem meter-se em disputas violentas ou entregar-se à ganância e a especulações desonestas. 8Deve antes ser dado à hospitalidade, zeloso por tudo o que é bom. Deve ser equilibrado e justo, sabendo dominar os seus sentidos. 9Deve ter uma forte convicção na palavra digna de crédito que lhe foi ensinada, para que se torne capaz de encorajar os outros pelo ensino da reta doutrina, e ao mesmo tempo convencer os que se lhe opõem.
10Porque há muitas pessoas rebeldes contra a verdadeira doutrina, gente que fala muito e consegue enganar as pessoas. Desse número fazem parte, em especial, os da circuncisão. 11É preciso fazer calar essas pessoas, pois já perturbaram famílias inteiras, ensinando o erro, levadas por um desonesto interesse por dinheiro. 12Um deles, seu próprio profeta, disse: “Os cretenses foram sempre mentirosos; são como animais indolentes, vivendo só para encher a barriga.” 13E isto é bem verdade! Portanto, avisa severamente os crentes para que se mantenham sãos nas questões da fé. 14E que não deem ouvidos às tradições fantasiosas judaicas, nem a exigências de homens que se desviam da verdade. 15Uma pessoa cujo coração é puro tem todas as coisas por puras; mas para os corruptos e incrédulos, tudo é impuro, devido à impureza que têm nas mentes e na consciência 16Dizem conhecer a Deus, mas renegam-no pelas obras que praticam. São criaturas detestáveis e desobedientes, incapazes de fazer seja o que for de bom.
