Life Through the Spirit
1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you8:2 The Greek is singular; some manuscripts me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,8:3 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit; also in verses 4-13. God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.8:3 Or flesh, for sin And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
9You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life8:10 Or you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of8:11 Some manuscripts bodies through his Spirit who lives in you.
12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
14For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.8:15 The Greek word for adoption to sonship is a term referring to the full legal standing of an adopted male heir in Roman culture; also in verse 23. And by him we cry, “Abba,8:15 Aramaic for father Father.” 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Present Suffering and Future Glory
18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that8:20,21 Or subjected it in hope. 21 For the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who8:28 Or that all things work together for good to those who love God, who; or that in all things God works together with those who love him to bring about what is good—with those who have been called according to his purpose. 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
More Than Conquerors
31What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”8:36 Psalm 44:22
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,8:38 Or nor heavenly rulers neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1こういうわけで、今は、キリスト・イエスに属する人が罪の宣告を受けることはありません。 2なぜなら、いのちを与える御霊の力が、罪と死の悪循環から解放してくれたからです。 3律法を知っているだけでは、罪の支配からは救い出されません。私たちはそれを守ることもできないし、実際守ってもいないからです。ところが、神は私たちを救うために、別の計画を実行に移されました。すなわち、神のひとり子を、私たちと同じ体を持つ者として〔ただ、私たちのような罪の性質を持たない点では異なりますが〕世にお遣わしになったのです。そして彼を、私たちの罪のためのいけにえとして、私たちをがんじがらめにする罪の支配を打ち破られたのです。 4ですから今、私たちは聖霊に従って歩むなら、律法に従うことができるのです。そしてもはや、古い罪の性質の言いなりになることはありません。 5罪の性質に従っている人は自分を喜ばせようとしますが、聖霊に従って歩む人は、神に喜んでいただこうとします。 6聖霊に従って歩むならいのちと平安があり、古い罪の性質に従って歩むなら死が待っています。 7古い性質は神に敵対するからです。古い性質が律法に従ったことは一度もなかったし、これからも決してありません。 8ですから、なおも古い自我に支配されて欲望に従い続ける者は、決して神をお喜ばせすることができないのです。
新しい性質を持って生きる
9しかし、あなたがたはそうではありません。もし神の御霊があなたがたのうちに住んでおられるなら、新しい性質に支配されているのです。もしその人のうちにキリストの御霊が住んでおられないなら、その人はクリスチャンではありません。 10もしキリストがうちに住んでおられるなら、古い自分は罪のために死んでも、キリストにあって新しい自分が生きるのです。 11そして、もしイエスを復活させた神の御霊が、あなたがたのうちに住んでおられるなら、神はこの同じ御霊によって、あなたがたの滅ぶべき体をも生かしてくださるのです。
12ですから、愛する皆さん。あなたがたの古い罪の性質がどんなことを要求しても、それに応じる必要は全くありません。 13もし古い性質に従い続けるなら、道に迷い、やがて滅びるしかありません。しかし、もし御霊の力によってそれを打ち砕くなら、あなたがたは生きるのです。
14神の御霊によって導かれる者はだれでも、神の子どもだからです。 15ですから私たちは、奴隷のようにいつもびくびくする必要はありません。神の家族の中に子どもとしてあたたかく迎え入れられたのですから、実の子どもらしくふるまい、神を「お父さん」と呼べるのです。 16というのは、御霊が私たちに、あなたがたはほんとうに神の子どもであると語ってくださるからです。 17私たちは神の子どもですから、神の相続財産を受けるのです。神がひとり子イエスにお与えになったものは、今では私たちのものでもあるのです。私たちが神の子の栄光を共に受けるのなら、当然、その苦難をも共に受けなければなりません。
18けれども、私たちがいま味わっている苦しみは、後に私たちが受ける栄光に比べたら、取るに足りないものです。 19そして、神がお造りになったすべてのものが、神の子どもたちの復活を忍耐と希望をもって待ち望んでいます。 20-21その日には、罪、死、腐敗など〔この世界は今、神の命令により、不本意ながらこれらのものに支配されていますが〕は跡形もなく消え去り、この世界は、神の子どもたちが喜びをもって味わうことができる、罪からの輝かしい解放にあずかるからです。 22私たちは、自然界もこのすばらしい日を待ち望みながら、苦しみうめいていることを知っています。 23そればかりか、私たちクリスチャンでさえ、御霊を自分のうちにいただいて、将来の栄光を先取りしているにもかかわらず、罪からの完全な解放を待ち望んでうめいています。その日には、神が約束してくださった新しい体、すなわち、もはや苦しみも死もない体をいただくのです。 24私たちは、このように信じて待ち望むことで救われています。信じて待ち望むとは、今は持っていなくても、やがて与えられると確信して待つことです。すでに持っていると思う人は、神が与えてくださると期待したり、信じて待ち望んだりはしません。 25しかし、まだ起こっていないことを待たなければならないのなら、忍耐をもって、確信して待ち望むのです。
26御霊も同じようにして、弱い私たちを助けてくださいます。私たちは、何をどのように祈ったらよいかさえわからないのですが、御霊は、ことばに表せないほどの深い同情と理解をもって、とりなしてくださるのです。 27すべての人の心を知っておられる父なる神は、御霊が私たちのために、神ご自身のお心にかなう願いをささげてくださる時、その願いの意図をもちろん知っておられます。
28私たちは、神を愛し神のご計画のうちを歩んでいる人のためには、その身に起こることはすべて、神が益としてくださることを知っているのです。 29というのは、神はあらかじめ、ご自分のもとに来る人を知っていて、そのような人々がご自分の御子と同じになるように、最初から定めておられたからです。それは、御子イエスを多くの主を信じる者たちの長子とするためでした。 30神はあらかじめ選んだ人々を招き、そして彼らの罪を赦し、義（正しい者）と認められた人々には、さらに栄光を与えると約束してくださいました。
神が私たちの味方
31こんなにすばらしい恵みに対して、いったい何と言ったらよいでしょう。神が味方なら、だれが私たちに敵対できるでしょうか。 32神は私たちすべてのために、たった一人の御子さえ惜しまずに、死に渡されたほどのお方ですから、ほかのすべてのものをも下さらないわけがあるでしょうか。 33神がご自分のものとして選ばれた私たちを訴えるのはだれですか。神ですか。とんでもない。神は私たちを赦し、義としてくださった方ではありませんか。 34では、私たちを罪に定めるのはだれですか。キリストですか。とんでもない。キリストは私たちのために死に、復活し、今は神の右の座で、私たちのために祈っていてくださるお方ではありませんか。 35では、いったいだれが、私たちをキリストの愛から引き離すことができるのでしょうか。災難や苦しみ、迫害ですか。飢えや貧乏、あるいは危険や剣ですか。 36聖書にこう書いてあるとおりです。
「神のためには、いつでも
死ねる心がまえでいなければならない。
私たちは殺されるのを待つ羊のようだ。」（詩篇44・22）
37しかし、こうした中にあっても私たちは、いのちを投げ出してまで私たちを愛してくださったキリストによって、圧倒的な罪からの勝利を得るのです。 38神の愛から私たちを引き離すことができるものは何一つない、と確信しています。死もいのちも、そんなことはできません。天使にもできません。地獄の全勢力が結集しても、神の愛から私たちを遠ざけることはできません。恐れも、不安も同様です。 39あるいは、私たちが空高くのぼっても、海の底深くもぐっても、どこにいようと、神の愛から私たちを引き離すことはできません。
