The Remnant of Israel
1I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: 3“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”11:3 1 Kings 19:10,14? 4And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”11:4 1 Kings 19:18 5So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.
7What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were hardened, 8as it is written:
“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that could not see
and ears that could not hear,
to this very day.”11:8 Deut. 29:4; Isaiah 29:10
9And David says:
“May their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever.”11:10 Psalm 69:22,23
Ingrafted Branches
11Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!
13I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry 14in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. 15For if their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
17If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
22Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved
25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26and in this way11:26 Or and so all Israel will be saved. As it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27And this is11:27 Or will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”11:27 Isaiah 59:20,21; 27:9 (see Septuagint); Jer. 31:33,34
28As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now11:31 Some manuscripts do not have now. receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
Doxology
33Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and11:33 Or riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
34“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”11:34 Isaiah 40:13
35“Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”11:35 Job 41:11
36For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
Har Gud övergett Israels folk?
1Så nu frågar jag: har då Gud stött bort sitt folk helt och hållet? Nej, inte alls! Jag är ju själv israelit, en ättling till Abraham och av Benjamins stam.
2Gud har inte stött bort dem som han en gång utsåg till sitt eget folk. Vet ni inte vad det står i Skriften om Elia? Han anklagade Israel inför Gud: 3”Herre, de har dödat dina profeter och rivit ner dina altaren. Jag är den ende som är kvar, och nu vill de döda mig också.”11:3 Se 1 Kung 19:10,14. 4Men vad svarade Gud honom? ”Jag har lämnat kvar åt mig sjutusen personer som aldrig har fallit ner och tillbett Baal.”11:4 Baal var en kanaaneisk fruktbarhetsgud. Jfr 2 Mos 34:13-15. För citatet se 1 Kung 19:18. 5På samma sätt finns det nu i vår tid en rest som Gud i sin nåd har utvalt. 6Men om det var av nåd, då har det inget med gärningar att göra. Då skulle ju nåden inte vara nåd.
7Alltså, det som Israel sökte så ivrigt efter uppnådde de aldrig. Bara de utvalda gjorde det. De andra blev förstockade. 8Det står ju skrivet:
”Gud har låtit en sömnens anda drabba dem.
Ända till denna dag
har han hindrat deras ögon från att se
och deras öron från att höra.”11:8 Se 5 Mos 29:4 och Jes 29:10.
9David säger:
”Låt deras bord bli en fälla för dem,
en snara och ett straff.
10Låt deras ögon drabbas av mörker, så att de inte ser,
och deras ryggar krökas för alltid.”11:10 Se Ps 69:23-24.
Inympade grenar
11Så nu frågar jag igen: snubblade de för att falla? Nej, inte alls! Men på grund av deras fall har räddningen nått även andra folk, och nu är israeliterna avundsjuka på dem. 12Och om deras fall gav världen rikedom och om deras misslyckande resulterade i rikedom för andra folk, hur mycket större rikedom ska då inte deras fullhet11:12 Kan kanske också tolkas som ”deras fulla antal”. ge!
13Nu talar jag till er hedningar: som hedningarnas apostel värdesätter jag min tjänst högt. 14Kanske kan jag få mitt eget folk att känna avund och rädda några av dem. 15Om det att de stöttes bort innebar att världen försonades, vad ska det då betyda att de blev mottagna igen, om inte liv för de döda! 16Om det första brödet är heligt, så är hela degen helig.11:16 Jfr 4 Mos 15:17-21. Och om roten är helig är också grenarna heliga.
17Om några av grenarna har brutits av, och du, som är en gren från ett vilt olivträd, har blivit inympad bland de andra grenarna och får nu också del av saven som stiger upp ifrån trädets rot, 18ska du inte börja skryta bland grenarna. Gör du det ska du veta att det är roten som bär upp dig och inte tvärtom.
19Nu kanske du tänker: ”Men de där grenarna bröts ju av för att lämna plats åt mig.” 20Det är sant. Men de bröts av därför att de inte trodde, och du är där därför att du tror. Var inte högfärdig, utan frukta! 21Om Gud inte skonade de äkta grenarna, så kommer han inte heller att skona dig.
22Här ser du alltså Guds godhet och stränghet: hans stränghet mot dem som föll, hans godhet mot dig så länge du håller dig till hans godhet. I annat fall kommer du också att skäras bort. 23Och om de andra inte håller fast vid sin otro kommer de att inympas tillbaka, för Gud har makt att göra det. 24Om du skars av från ett, av naturen vilt olivträd, och mot naturens ordning ympades in på ett planterat olivträd, hur mycket lättare är det då inte att ympa in de äkta grenarna igen.
Israel ska räddas
25Syskon, jag vill att ni ska känna till denna hemlighet, så att ni inte tänker för höga tankar om er själva: En del av israeliterna är förstockade, och så kommer det att vara tills fullheten från de andra folken har kommit in. 26Sedan ska hela Israel bli räddat. Det står ju skrivet:
”Befriaren ska komma från Sion,
och han ska ta bort all ondska från Jakob.
27Och detta är det förbund jag ingår med dem:
jag ska ta bort deras synder.”11:27 Se Jes 59:20-21. Den grekiska översättningen skiljer sig i vissa detaljer från den masoretiska texten i Gamla testamentet. Se även Jes 27:9.
28När det gäller evangeliet är de Guds fiender för er skull, men samtidigt är de utvalda och älskade för förfädernas skull. 29Gud ångrar inte sina gåvor och sin kallelse. 30Förut var ni olydiga mot Gud, men har nu fått förbarmande genom deras olydnad. 31Nu har de blivit olydiga, för att även de ska få barmhärtighet genom den barmhärtighet som ni får. 32Gud lät alla människor bli fångade i sin egen olydnad, för att han skulle kunna visa förbarmande mot alla.
Lovprisning
33Vilket djup av rikedom, vishet och kunskap hos Gud!
Vem kan någonsin förstå hans beslut och hans planer?
34”Vem känner till hur Herren tänker?
Vem kan ge honom råd?
35Vem kan ge något till Gud,
som han skulle behöva betala tillbaka?”11:35 Se Jes 40:13 och Job 41:11.
36Allting kommer ju från honom, genom honom
och finns till för honom.
Hans är äran i all evighet. Amen.
