The Purity of the Camp
1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease5:2 The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated “leprosy,” was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.” 4The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.
Restitution for Wrongs
5The Lord said to Moses, 6“Say to the Israelites: ‘Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way5:6 Or woman who commits any wrong common to mankind and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty 7and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. 9All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. 10Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.’ ”
The Test for an Unfaithful Wife
11Then the Lord said to Moses, 12“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure— 15then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah5:15 That is, probably about 3 1/2 pounds or about 1.6 kilograms of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.
16“ ‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— 21here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse5:21 That is, may he cause your name to be used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, may others see that you are cursed; similarly in verse 27. among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”
“ ‘Then the woman is to say, “Amen. So be it.”
23“ ‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial5:26 Or representative offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. 28If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.
29“ ‘This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.’ ”
의식상 부정한 사람들을
1여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
2“너는 이스라엘 백성에게 명령하여 모든 문둥병자와 유출병 있는 자와 시체를 만져 부정하게 된 자들을 진영 밖으로 내보내도록 하라.
3너는 남자든 여자든 그런 자들을 다 진영 밖으로 내보내 내가 머물고 있는 진영을 더럽히지 않도록 하라.”
4그래서 이스라엘 백성은 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 그들을 모두 진영 밖으로 내보냈다.
피해 보상에 관한 규정
5-6여호와께서는 이스라엘 백성에게 이렇 게 전하라고 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “어떤 남자나 여자가 5:5-6 또는 ‘사람들이 범하는 죄를 범하여’남에게 피해를 입혀 나 여호와에게 신실하지 못하면 그 사람은 죄를 범하였으므로
7그 죄를 고백하고 그 피해액에 5분의 을 더하여 피해자에게 배상하라.
8그러나 만일 그 피해자가 죽었을 경우 배상금을 받을 가까운 친척이 없으면 그것은 나 여호와의 것이므로 그 사람의 죄를 씻을 속죄의 숫양과 함께 제사장에게 바쳐야 한다.
9-10이스라엘 백성이 나 여호와에게 드리 려고 제사장에게 가져오는 모든 거룩한 예물은 제사장의 것이니 제사장이 갖도록 하여라.”
아내의 순결이 의심스러울 때
11-12여호와께서는 이스라엘 백성에게 이 렇게 전하라고 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “만일 어떤 사람의 아내가 간음하여
13남편에게 탄로되지 않고 증인도 없으며 현장에서 잡히지도 않았지만
14남편이 아내의 부정을 의심하거나 또 아내가 몸을 더럽히지 않았어도 그녀에 대하여 의심이 생기면
15남편은 아내를 제사장에게 데리고 가서 그녀를 위해 보릿가루 5:15 히 ‘에바 1/10’2.2리터를 바쳐야 한다. 그러나 그 보릿가루에 기름을 붓거나 유향을 넣어서는 안 된다. 이것은 의심하는 남편이 사실을 밝히려고 드리는 예물이기 때문이다.
16“제사장은 그 여자를 가까이 오게 하여 나 여호와 앞에 세우고
17토기에 거룩한 물을 담아 거기에 성막 바닥의 티끌을 집어 넣어라.
18그리고 그 여자의 머리를 풀게 한 후 그 예물을 손에 들게 하고 제사장은 저주를 불러일으킬 쓴물을 들고
19그녀에게 맹세하게 한 다음 이렇게 말하여라. ‘만일 당신이 간음하지 않았으면 저주를 불러일으킬 이 쓴물로 해를 입지 않을 것입니다.
20그러나 만일 당신이 간음하였으면
21-22저주를 불러일으킬 이 물이 당신의 몸에 들어가 배가 부어오르고 당신의 하체가 썩어 문드러질 것입니다.’ 그러면 그 여자는 5:21-22 히 ‘아멘 아멘’‘예, 그렇게 되게 하십시오’ 하고 말해야 한다.
23“그런 후에 제사장은 이 저주의 말을 두루마리에 기록하여 그것을 쓴물에 빨아
24그 물을 그 여자에게 마시게 하라. 5:24 암시됨.그녀가 죄를 지었다면 이 물이 그녀의 몸 속에 들어가 쓰라린 고통을 느끼게 할 것이다.
25그러나 그 물을 먹이기 전에 제사장은 먼저 그 여자가 들고 있는 보릿가루 예물을 가져다가 나 여호와 앞에서 흔든 다음 제단으로 가지고 가서
26예물 전체를 바쳤다는 뜻으로 그것을 한 움큼 집어 제단에서 태운 후에 그 물을 마시게 하라.
27만일 그 여자가 자기 남편을 배신하고 간음하여 더러워졌다면 그 물이 뱃속에 들어갈 때 쓰라린 고통을 느끼게 될 것이며 그 배는 부어오르고 그녀의 하체는 썩어 문드러질 것이다. 그리고 그 여자는 사람들 가운데 저줏거리가 될 것이다.
28그러나 그 여자가 자신을 더럽히지 않았고 순결하다면 아무런 해도 입지 않을 것이며 그녀는 임신할 수 있을 것이다.
29-30“이것은 간음하는 아내와 아내를 의심 하는 남편에 관한 법이다. 제사장은 그 여자를 나 여호와 앞에 세우고 이 법을 시행해야 한다.
31이런 경우에 남편에게는 아무 잘못이 없지만 아내에게 죄가 있으면 그녀는 그 죄의 대가를 받아야 할 것이다.”
