Zebah and Zalmunna
1Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously.
2But he answered them, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer? 3God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided.
4Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it. 5He said to the men of Sukkoth, “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
6But the officials of Sukkoth said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?”
7Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”
8From there he went up to Peniel8:8 Hebrew Penuel, a variant of Peniel; also in verses 9 and 17 and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had. 9So he said to the men of Peniel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.”
10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen. 11Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the unsuspecting army. 12Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.
13Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres. 14He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth, the elders of the town. 15Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?’ ” 16He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers. 17He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.
18Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?”
“Men like you,” they answered, “each one with the bearing of a prince.”
19Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.” 20Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.
21Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Come, do it yourself. ‘As is the man, so is his strength.’ ” So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments off their camels’ necks.
Gideon’s Ephod
22The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.” 24And he said, “I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.” (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)
25They answered, “We’ll be glad to give them.” So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 26The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,8:26 That is, about 43 pounds or about 20 kilograms not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels’ necks. 27Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.
Gideon’s Death
28Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace forty years.
29Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live. 30He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. 31His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek. 32Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god 34and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.
شكست نهايی مديانی‌ها
1اما رهبران قبيلهٔ افرايم به شدت نسبت به جدعون خشمناک شده، گفتند: «چرا اول كه به جنگ مديانی‌ها رفتی ما را خبر نكردی؟»
2-3جدعون در جواب ايشان گفت: «خدا غراب و ذئب، سرداران مديان را به دست شما تسليم نمود. در مقايسه با كار شما، من چه كرده‌ام؟ عمليات شما در آخر جنگ مهمتر از عمليات ما در آغاز جنگ بود.» پس آنها آرام شدند.
4آنگاه جدعون و سيصد نفری كه همراهش بودند از رود اردن گذشتند. با اينكه خيلی خسته بودند، ولی هنوز دشمن را تعقيب می‌كردند. 5جدعون از اهالی سوكوت غذا خواست و گفت: «ما به خاطر تعقيب زبح و صلمونع، پادشاهان مديانی بسيار خسته هستيم.»
6اما رهبران سوكوت جواب دادند: «شما هنوز زبح و صلمونع را نگرفته‌ايد كه ما به شما نان بدهيم.»
7جدعون به آنها گفت: «وقتی كه خداوند آنها را به دست من تسليم كند، برمی‌گردم و گوشت بدن شما را با خارهای صحرا می‌درم.»
8سپس نزد اهالی فنوئيل رفت و از آنها نان خواست اما همان جواب را شنيد. 9پس به ايشان گفت: «وقتی از اين جنگ سلامت برگردم، اين برج را منهدم خواهم كرد.»
10در اين هنگام زبح و صلمونع با قريب پانزده هزار سرباز باقيمانده در قرقور به سر می‌بردند. از آن سپاه عظيم دشمنان فقط همين عده باقيمانده بودند. صد و بيست هزار نفر كشته شده بودند. 11پس جدعون از راه چادرنشينان در شرق نوبح و يجبهاه بر مدیانیان شبيخون زد. 12زبح و صلمونع فرار كردند، اما جدعون به تعقيب آنها پرداخته، ايشان را گرفت و سپاه آنها را به کلی تار و مار ساخت. 13بعد از آن، وقتی جدعون از راه گردنهٔ حارس از جنگ باز می‌گشت 14در راه، جوانی از اهالی سوكوت را گرفت و از او خواست تا نامهای رهبران و بزرگان شهر سوكوت را بنويسد. او هم نامهای آنها را كه هفتاد و هفت نفر بودند، نوشت.
15پس جدعون نزد اهالی سوكوت بازگشته، به ايشان گفت: «اين هم زبح و صلمونع كه به من طعنه زده، گفتيد: شما كه هنوز زبح و صلمونع را نگرفته‌ايد؛ و به ما كه خسته و گرسنه بوديم نان نداديد.»
16آنگاه رهبران سوكوت را با خارهای صحرا مجازات كرد تا درس عبرتی برای اهالی آن شهر باشد. 17همچنين به فنوئيل رفت و برج شهر را خراب كرده، تمام مردان آنجا را كشت.
18آنگاه جدعون رو به زبح و صلمونع كرده، از ايشان پرسيد: «مردانی را كه در تابور كشتيد چه كسانی بودند؟» گفتند: «مانند شما و چون شاهزادگان بودند.»
19جدعون گفت: «آنها برادران من بودند. به خدای زنده قسم اگر آنها را نمی‌كشتيد، من هم شما را نمی‌كشتم.» 20آنگاه به يَتَر، پسر بزرگش دستور داد كه آنها را بكشد. ولی او شمشيرش را نكشيد، زيرا نوجوانی بيش نبود و می‌ترسيد.
21زبح و صلمونع به جدعون گفتند: «خودت ما را بكش، چون می‌خواهيم به دست يک مرد كشته شويم.» پس او آنها را كشت و زيورآلات گردن شترهايشان را برداشت.
22اسرائيلی‌ها به جدعون گفتند: «پادشاه ما باش. تو و پسرانت و نسلهای آيندهٔ شما بر ما فرمانروايی كنيد؛ زيرا تو ما را از دست مديانی‌ها رهايی بخشيدی.»
23-24اما جدعون جواب داد: «نه من پادشاه شما می‌شوم و نه پسرانم. خداوند پادشاه شماست! من فقط يک خواهش از شما دارم، تمام گوشواره‌هايی را كه از دشمنان مغلوب خود به چنگ آورده‌ايد به من بدهيد.» (سپاهيان مديان همه اسماعيلی بودند و گوشواره‌های طلا به گوش داشتند.)
25آنها گفتند: «با كمال ميل آنها را تقديم می‌كنيم.» آنگاه پارچه‌ای پهن كرده، هر كدام از آنها گوشواره‌هايی را كه به غنيمت گرفته بود روی آن انداخت. 26به غير از زيورآلات، آويزها و لباسهای سلطنتی و زنجيرهای گردن شتران، وزن گوشواره‌ها حدود بيست كيلوگرم بود. 27جدعون از اين طلاها يک ايفود8:27 «ايفود» جليقهٔ مخصوصی بود که کاهنان روی لباس خود می‌پوشيدند. ساخت و آن را در شهر خود عفره گذاشت. طولی نكشيد كه تمام مردم اسرائيل به خدا خيانت كرده، به پرستش آن پرداختند. اين ايفود برای جدعون و خاندان او دامی شد.
28به اين ترتيب، مديانی‌ها از اسرائيلی‌ها شكست خوردند و ديگر هرگز قدرت خود را باز نيافتند. در سرزمين اسرائيل مدت چهل سال يعنی در تمام طول عمر جدعون صلح برقرار شد.
مرگ جدعون
29جدعون به خانهٔ خود بازگشت. 30او صاحب هفتاد پسر بود، زيرا زنان زيادی داشت. 31وی همچنين در شكيم كنيزی داشت كه برايش پسری به دنیا آورد و او را ابيملک نام نهاد. 32جدعون در كمال پيری درگذشت و او را در مقبرهٔ پدرش يوآش در عفره در سرزمين طايفهٔ ابيعزر دفن كردند.
33پس از مرگ جدعون، اسرائيلی‌ها دوباره از خدا برگشتند و به پرستش بتها پرداخته، بت بعل‌بريت را خدای خود ساختند. 34آنها خداوند، خدای خود را كه ايشان را از دست دشمنان اطرافشان رهانيده بود فراموش كردند، 35و نيز برای خاندان جدعون، كه آن همه به آنها خدمت كرده بود احترامی قايل نشدند.
