Gideon Defeats the Midianites
1Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ 3Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” 8So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. 10If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.
13Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.” 16Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside.
17“Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’ ”
19Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. 20The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.
22When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath. 23Israelites from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites. 24Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.
Tinalo ni Gideon ang mga Midianita
1Nang araw na iyon, maagang gumising si Jerubaal (na siya ring tawag kay Gideon) kasama ng mga tauhan niya. Nagkampo sila sa may bukal ng Harod. Nagkampo ang mga Midianita sa hilaga nila sa lambak malapit sa Bundok ng Moreh. 2Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Gideon, “Napakarami mong kasama. Baka isipin nila na natalo nila ang mga Midianita dahil sa sarili nilang kakayahan at hindi dahil sa akin. 3Kaya sabihan mo sila na kung sino man ang natatakot ay maaari nang umalis dito sa Bundok ng Gilead at umuwi na.” Nang sinabi ito ni Gideon, umuwi ang 22,000, at 10,000 na lang ang natira.
4Pero sinabi ng Panginoon kay Gideon, “Marami pa rin ang naiwan. Dalhin mo sila sa ilog at susubukin ko sila. Kung sino ang sasabihin kong makakasama ay isama mo, at ang sasabihin ko na huwag isama ay huwag mong isama.”
5Kaya dinala sila ni Gideon sa ilog. At dooʼy sinabi ng Panginoon, “Ibukod ang lahat ng umiinom ng tubig sa kanilang kamay na parang umiinom na aso, at ibukod din ang umiinom nang nakaluhod.” 6May 300 tao ang uminom sa kanilang mga kamay, at ang iba naman ay uminom na nakaluhod. 7Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Gideon, “Sa pamamagitan ng 300 taong ito ay ililigtas ko kayo at pagtatagumpayin sa mga Midianita. Ang mga natirang tao ay pauwiin na sa kani-kanilang lugar.” 8Kaya pinauwi nga sila ni Gideon matapos ipaiwan ang mga dala nilang baon at mga trumpeta; pinaiwan din niya ang 300 taong napili.
Ang kampo ng mga Midianita ay nasa ibaba lang ng bundok, kung saan sa itaas nito ay naroon sila Gideon. 9Nang gabing iyon, sinabi ng Panginoon kay Gideon, “Maghanda ka na! Lusubin nʼyo na ang kampo ng mga Midianita, dahil ipapatalo ko sila sa inyo. 10Kung natatakot kang lumusob, isama mo ang lingkod mong si Pura at pumunta kayo sa kampo ng mga Midianita, 11at pakinggan nʼyo kung ano ang sinasabi nila. Tiyak na lalakas ang loob mong lumusob dahil sa maririnig mo.” Kaya pumunta silang dalawa sa hangganan ng kampo ng mga Midianita, kung saan may mga sundalong nagbabantay. 12Nagkampo sa lambak ang mga Midianita, Amalekita at ang iba pang mga tao sa silangan na parang kasindami ng balang. Ang mga kamelyo nila ay parang buhangin sa dagat na hindi mabilang.
13Nang naroon na sina Gideon, may narinig silang dalawang tao na nag-uusap. Sinabi ng isa, “Nanaginip ako na may isang pirasong tinapay na sebada na gumulong papunta sa kampo natin at tumama ito nang malakas sa isang tolda. Pagkatapos, natumba ang tolda at nawasak.” 14Sumagot ang isa, “Ang panaginip moʼy walang iba kundi ang espada ni Gideon, ang Israelitang anak ni Joash. Pagtatagumpayin siya ng Dios laban sa mga Midianita at sa ating lahat.”
15Nang marinig ni Gideon ang panaginip at ang kahulugan nito, nagpuri siya sa Panginoon. At bumalik siya sa kampo ng mga Israelita at sinabi niya sa kanyang mga kasamahan, “Magsipaghanda kayo dahil pagtatagumpayin tayo ng Panginoon laban sa mga Midianita.” 16Hinati niya sa tatlong grupo ang 300 niyang tauhan, at binigyan ang bawat isa ng trumpeta at mga banga na may ilaw sa loob nito. 17At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Sundan nʼyo ako ng tingin. Kapag naroon na kami sa dulo ng kampo ng kalaban, gawin nʼyo kung ano ang gagawin ko. 18Kapag pinatunog ko at ng mga kasama ko ang mga trumpeta namin, ganoon din ang gawin nʼyo sa palibot ng kampo, at isigaw nʼyo nang malakas, ‘Para sa Panginoon at kay Gideon!’ ”
19Maghahatinggabi na nang dumating si Gideon at ang 100 niyang kasama sa hangganan ng kampo ng kalaban, kapapalit lang ng guwardya noon. Pinatunog nina Gideon ang mga trumpeta nila at pinagbabasag ang kanilang mga banga. 20Ganoon din ang ginawa ng ibang grupo. At habang hawak nila ang ilaw sa kaliwang kamay at ang trumpeta sa kanang kamay, sumisigaw sila, “Lumaban tayo gamit ang ating espada para sa Panginoon at kay Gideon.” 21Ang bawat isa ay pumwesto sa kanya-kanyang lugar sa palibot ng kampo, pero ang mga kalaban nila ay nagsisisigaw na nagsitakas. 22Habang tumutunog ang trumpeta ng 300 Israelita, pinaglaban-laban ng Panginoon ang mga Midianita sa loob ng kampo. Ang iba ay tumakas papunta sa Bet Shita malapit sa Zerera hanggang sa Abel Mehola malapit sa Tabat.
23Ipinatawag ni Gideon ang mga Israelita mula sa lahi nina Naftali, Asher at sa buong lahi ni Manase, at ipinahabol sa kanila ang mga Midianita. 24Nagsugo rin si Gideon ng mga mensahero para sabihin sa mga naninirahan sa kabundukan ng Efraim na magbantay sila sa Ilog ng Jordan hanggang sa sapa ng Bet Bara para hindi makatawid ang mga Midianita roon. Sinunod ito ng lahat ng lalaki sa Efraim, at binantayan nila ang Ilog ng Jordan hanggang sa sapa ng Bet Bara. 25Nabihag nila ang dalawang pinuno ng mga Midianita na sina Oreb at Zeeb. Pinatay nila si Oreb sa bato na tinawag na Bato ni Oreb, at si Zeeb ay pinatay nila sa pisaan ng ubas na tinawag na Pisaan ng Ubas ni Zeeb. Patuloy nilang hinabol ang mga Midianita. Pagkatapos, dinala nila ang ulo ni Oreb at ni Zeeb kay Gideon na naroon sa kabila ng Ilog ng Jordan.
