Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
12“Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
17Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19“Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
25He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
30The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. 32Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
34To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
Spiritual Blindness
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36“Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39Jesus said,9:38,39 Some early manuscripts do not have Then the man said… 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
พระเยซูทรงรักษาชายตาบอดแต่กำเนิด
1ขณะเสด็จไปตามทางพระองค์ทรงเห็นชายตาบอดแต่กำเนิดคนหนึ่ง 2เหล่าสาวกทูลถามพระองค์ว่า “รับบี ใครกันที่ทำบาป ชายผู้นี้หรือบิดามารดาของเขา เขาจึงเกิดมาตาบอด?”
3พระเยซูตรัสว่า “ไม่ใช่คนนี้หรือบิดามารดาของเขาที่ทำบาป แต่การนี้เกิดขึ้นเพื่อสำแดงพระราชกิจของพระเจ้าในชีวิตของเขา 4ตราบใดที่ยังเป็นเวลากลางวันอยู่พวกเราต้องทำงานของพระองค์ผู้ทรงส่งเรามา จวนจะถึงเวลากลางคืนแล้ว เวลานั้นไม่มีใครทำงานได้ 5ขณะที่เราอยู่ในโลก เราเป็นความสว่างของโลก”
6เมื่อพระองค์ตรัสเช่นนี้แล้วก็ทรงบ้วนน้ำลายลงที่พื้นทำเป็นโคลนทาที่ตาของคนนั้น 7พระองค์ตรัสสั่งเขาว่า “จงไปล้างออกที่สระสิโลอัมเถิด” (สิโลอัมแปลว่า ส่งไป) ชายคนนั้นจึงไปล้างโคลนออกและขณะกลับบ้านก็มองเห็นได้
8เพื่อนบ้านของเขาและผู้ที่เคยเห็นเขานั่งขอทานถามกันว่า “นี่เป็นชายคนเดียวกับคนที่เคยนั่งขอทานไม่ใช่หรือ?” 9บางคนก็ว่าใช่
บางคนก็ว่า “ไม่ใช่ เพียงแต่หน้าตาคล้ายๆ กัน”
แต่ตัวเขาเองยืนยันว่า “ข้าพเจ้าคือชายคนนั้น”
10พวกเขาคาดคั้นว่า “แล้วตาของท่านหายบอดได้อย่างไร?”
11เขาตอบว่า “ชายคนที่เรียกกันว่าพระเยซูเอาโคลนทาที่ตาทั้งสองข้างของข้าพเจ้าและสั่งให้ข้าพเจ้าไปล้างออกที่สระสิโลอัม ดังนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงไปล้างออกแล้วข้าพเจ้าก็มองเห็นได้”
12พวกเขาถามว่า “ชายคนนั้นอยู่ที่ไหน?”
เขาตอบว่า “ข้าพเจ้าไม่ทราบ”
พวกฟาริสีสอบสวนเรื่องการรักษาคนตาบอด
13พวกเขานำคนที่เคยตาบอดมาพบพวกฟาริสี 14วันที่พระเยซูทรงทำโคลนรักษาตาของคนนั้นให้หายบอดเป็นวันสะบาโต 15ดังนั้นพวกฟาริสีจึงถามด้วยว่าเขามองเห็นได้อย่างไร คนนั้นบอกว่า “เขาผู้นั้นเอาโคลนทาที่ตาทั้งสองข้างของข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าไปล้างออกและเดี๋ยวนี้ข้าพเจ้าก็มองเห็น”
16ฟาริสีบางคนพูดว่า “ชายผู้นี้ไม่ได้มาจากพระเจ้า เพราะเขาไม่ถือรักษาวันสะบาโต”
แต่คนอื่นๆ ถามว่า “คนบาปจะทำหมายสำคัญเช่นนี้ได้อย่างไร?” พวกเขาจึงแตกแยกกัน
17ในที่สุดพวกเขาหันมาถามชายตาบอดอีกว่า “เจ้าจะว่าอย่างไรเกี่ยวกับคนนั้น? ในเมื่อเขาทำให้ตาของเจ้าหายบอด”
เขาตอบว่า “เขาเป็นผู้เผยพระวจนะ”
18พวกยิวยังไม่เชื่อว่าเขาเคยตาบอดและกลับมองเห็นได้จนกระทั่งได้เรียกบิดามารดาของเขามา 19พวกเขาถามว่า “นี่คือลูกชายของเจ้าใช่ไหม? นี่คือคนที่เจ้าบอกว่าตาบอดแต่กำเนิดใช่ไหม? เดี๋ยวนี้เขามองเห็นได้อย่างไร?”
20บิดามารดาของเขาตอบว่า “เรารู้ว่าเขาเป็นลูกของเราและเรารู้ว่าเขาตาบอดมาตั้งแต่เกิด 21แต่เราไม่รู้ว่าเดี๋ยวนี้เขามองเห็นได้อย่างไร หรือใครรักษาตาของเขาให้หายบอด จงถามเขาเถิด เขาเป็นผู้ใหญ่แล้วเขาพูดเองได้” 22บิดามารดาของเขาพูดเช่นนั้นเพราะกลัวพวกยิวเพราะพวกเขาได้ตกลงกันไว้ว่าใครยอมรับพระเยซูเป็นพระคริสต์9:22 หรือพระเมสสิยาห์จะถูกอเปหิจากธรรมศาลา 23ฉะนั้นบิดามารดาของเขาจึงบอกว่า “เขาเป็นผู้ใหญ่แล้ว จงถามเขาเถิด”
24พวกนั้นจึงเรียกตัวคนที่เคยตาบอดมาพบเป็นครั้งที่สองและพูดว่า “จงถวายพระเกียรติสิริแด่พระเจ้าด้วยการพูดความจริง เรารู้ว่าคนนั้นเป็นคนบาป”
25เขาตอบว่า “เขาเป็นคนบาปหรือไม่ข้าพเจ้าไม่ทราบ สิ่งเดียวที่ข้าพเจ้าทราบก็คือข้าพเจ้าเคยตาบอดแต่เดี๋ยวนี้มองเห็นแล้ว!”
26แล้วพวกเขาจึงถามว่า “เขาทำอะไรกับเจ้า? เขาทำอย่างไรตาของเจ้าจึงหายบอด?”
27เขาตอบว่า “ข้าพเจ้าก็บอกไปแล้วและพวกท่านไม่ฟัง ทำไมท่านอยากฟังอีก? ท่านอยากเป็นสาวกของเขาด้วยหรือ?”
28แล้วพวกนั้นจึงพากันประณามเขาเป็นการใหญ่และกล่าวว่า “เจ้าเป็นสาวกของคนนั้น! ส่วนเราเป็นสาวกของโมเสส! 29เรารู้ว่าพระเจ้าตรัสกับโมเสส แต่ส่วนคนนั้นเราไม่รู้ด้วยซ้ำว่าเขามาจากไหน”
30ชายคนนั้นตอบว่า “แปลกจริงๆ! ท่านไม่รู้ว่าเขามาจากไหนแต่เขาก็รักษาตาของข้าพเจ้าให้หายบอด 31พวกเรารู้ว่าพระเจ้าไม่ได้ทรงฟังคนบาป พระองค์ทรงฟังคนที่อยู่ในทางพระเจ้าผู้ทำตามพระประสงค์ของพระองค์ 32ไม่เคยมีใครได้ยินถึงการรักษาคนตาบอดแต่กำเนิดให้มองเห็นได้ 33หากชายผู้นั้นไม่ได้มาจากพระเจ้า เขาย่อมไม่สามารถทำอะไรได้เลย”
34พวกนั้นตอบโต้เขาว่า “เจ้าจมปลักอยู่ในบาปมาตั้งแต่เกิด เจ้ากล้าดีอย่างไรมาสั่งสอนเรา!” แล้วอเปหิเขาจากธรรมศาลา
ความมืดบอดฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณ
35พระเยซูทรงได้ยินว่าพวกนั้นได้อเปหิเขา เมื่อทรงพบเขาพระองค์จึงตรัสว่า “ท่านเชื่อในบุตรมนุษย์หรือไม่?”
36ชายคนนั้นถามว่า “ท่านเจ้าข้า ใครคือบุตรมนุษย์? โปรดบอกเถิด ข้าพเจ้าจะได้เชื่อในพระองค์”
37พระเยซูตรัสว่า “บัดนี้ท่านก็ได้เห็นพระองค์แล้ว อันที่จริงพระองค์คือผู้ที่กำลังพูดกับท่าน”
38คนนั้นจึงทูลว่า “พระองค์เจ้าข้า ข้าพระองค์เชื่อ” และเขาก็กราบนมัสการพระองค์
39พระเยซูตรัสว่า9:38,39 สำเนาต้นฉบับเก่าแก่บางสำเนาไม่มีข้อ 38 และ 39ก. “เราเข้ามาในโลกนี้เพื่อการพิพากษา เพื่อให้คนตาบอดมองเห็นได้และให้คนที่มองเห็นได้กลับตาบอด”
40ฟาริสีบางคนที่อยู่กับพระองค์ได้ยินเช่นนั้นก็ทูลถามว่า “อะไรกัน? เราตาบอดด้วยหรือ?”
41พระเยซูตรัสว่า “ถ้าท่านตาบอดท่านก็คงจะไม่มีความผิดบาป แต่นี่ท่านอ้างว่าตัวเองมองเห็น บาปผิดของท่านจึงยังคงอยู่
