Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles
1After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want7:1 Some manuscripts not have authority to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
6Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8You go to the festival. I am not7:8 Some manuscripts not yet going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” 9After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”
12Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”
Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” 13But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
Jesus Teaches at the Festival
14Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
16Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”
20“You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
Division Over Who Jesus Is
25At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? 27But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”
30At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
32The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. 34You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
37On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”7:37,38 Or me. And let anyone drink 38 who believes in me.” As Scripture has said, “Out of him (or them) will flow rivers of living water.” 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
41Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders
45Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. 48“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]

Necredința fraților lui Isus
1După aceea, Isus a călătorit prin Galileea. Nu voia să călătorească prin Iudeea, pentru că iudeii căutau să‑L omoare. 2Sărbătoarea iudeilor, cea a Corturilor2 Vezi Lev. 23:33-43; Deut. 16:13-15; Zah. 14:16-19., era aproape.
3Prin urmare, frații Lui I‑au zis:
– Pleacă de aici și du‑Te în Iudeea, ca să vadă și ucenicii Tăi lucrările pe care le faci! 4Căci nimeni nu face ceva pe ascuns când caută să devină cunoscut. Dacă faci aceste lucruri, arată‑Te lumii!
5Căci nici chiar frații Lui nu credeau în El.
6Atunci Isus le‑a zis:
– Vremea Mea n‑a sosit încă, dar pentru voi vremea este întotdeauna potrivită! 7Pe voi lumea nu vă poate urî, dar pe Mine Mă urăște, pentru că Eu mărturisesc despre ea că lucrările ei sunt rele. 8Suiți‑vă voi la sărbătoare. Eu încă nu Mă sui la sărbătoarea aceasta, pentru că nu Mi s‑a împlinit încă vremea. 9Și zicând aceste lucruri, a rămas în Galileea.
Isus la Sărbătoarea Corturilor
10Însă, după ce frații Lui s‑au suit la sărbătoare, S‑a suit și El, dar nu pe față, ci mai pe ascuns. 11La sărbătoare, iudeii Îl căutau și se întrebau: „Unde este Acela?“ 12Era multă rumoare12 Termenul grecesc poate fi tradus și cu murmur, cârteală, nemulțumire, dispută. în mulțime cu privire la El. Unii ziceau: „Este un Om bun!“ Alții ziceau: „Nu, ci duce în rătăcire mulțimea!“ 13Totuși, de frica iudeilor, nimeni nu vorbea deschis despre El.
14Când sărbătoarea era deja la jumătate, Isus S‑a suit la Templu și a început să dea învățătură.
15Iudeii erau uimiți și se întrebau:
– Cum de știe Acesta atâta învățătură fără să fi învățat?!
16Atunci Isus le‑a răspuns și a zis:
– Învățătura Mea nu este a Mea, ci a Celui Ce M‑a trimis. 17Dacă vrea cineva să facă voia Lui, va cunoaște dacă învățătura este de la Dumnezeu sau dacă Eu vorbesc de la Mine. 18Cel ce vorbește de la el caută slava lui însuși. Dar cel ce caută slava celui ce l‑a trimis, acela este adevărat și în el nu este nedreptate. 19Oare nu v‑a dat Moise Legea? Și totuși niciunul dintre voi nu respectă19 Lit.: nu face. Legea! De ce căutați să Mă omorâți?
20Mulțimea a răspuns:
– Ai demon! Cine caută să Te omoare?!
21Isus a răspuns și le‑a zis:
– O lucrare am făcut și toți sunteți uimiți. 22Totuși, Moise v‑a dat circumcizia – nu că ea este de la Moise, ci de la patriarhi22 Lit.: de la tații. – și voi îl circumcideți pe om în ziua de Sabat. 23Dacă un om primește circumcizia în ziua de Sabat, ca să nu fie încălcată Legea lui Moise, atunci de ce sunteți furioși pe Mine pentru că am făcut sănătos un om întreg în ziua de Sabat? 24Nu judecați după înfățișare, ci judecați cu o judecată dreaptă!
Oamenii se întreabă dacă Isus este Cristosul
25Unii dintre ierusalimiți ziceau:
– Nu este Acesta Cel pe Care caută ei să‑L omoare? 26Și iată că vorbește deschis, iar ei nu‑I zic nimic! Nu cumva conducătorii au ajuns să cunoască într-adevăr că El este Cristosul? 27Totuși, noi știm de unde este Omul Acesta. Însă când va veni Cristosul nimeni nu va ști de unde este.27 Scrierile rabinice din sec. I d.Cr. arată că printre iudei nu exista o părere unanimă cu privire la originea lui Mesia; vezi 7:27 și 7:41-42.
28Atunci Isus, în timp ce dădea învățătură în Templu, a strigat și a zis:
– Mă cunoașteți și știți de unde sunt?28 Sau: Mă cunoașteți și știți de unde sunt! N‑am venit de la Mine Însumi, ci Cel Ce M‑a trimis este adevărat, iar voi nu‑L cunoașteți! 29Eu Îl cunosc, pentru că Eu sunt de la El și El M‑a trimis.
30Ei încercau să‑L aresteze, dar nimeni n‑a pus mâna pe El, căci încă nu‑I sosise ceasul.
31Însă mulți din mulțime au crezut în El și ziceau:
– Când va veni Cristosul, va face El mai multe semne decât a făcut Acesta?
32Fariseii au auzit mulțimea murmurând aceste lucruri despre El și, ca urmare, conducătorii preoților și fariseii au trimis niște gărzi să‑L aresteze.
33Atunci Isus a zis:
– Mai sunt cu voi încă puțină vreme, iar apoi plec la Cel Ce M‑a trimis. 34Mă veți căuta, dar nu Mă veți găsi, iar unde voi fi Eu, voi nu puteți veni.
35Iudeii se întrebau unii pe alții:
– Unde urmează să Se ducă Acesta, astfel încât noi să nu‑L găsim?! Doar nu urmează să Se ducă la cei împrăștiați printre greci și să‑i învețe pe greci?! 36Ce înseamnă cuvintele acestea pe care le‑a zis: „Mă veți căuta, dar nu Mă veți găsi, iar unde voi fi Eu, voi nu puteți veni.“?
Isus, Apa vieții
37În ultima zi a sărbătorii, ziua cea mare, Isus S‑a ridicat și a strigat, zicând: „Dacă însetează cineva, să vină la Mine și să bea! 38Cel ce crede în Mine, din inima lui vor curge râuri de apă vie, așa cum zice Scriptura!37-38 Sau: „Dacă însetează cineva, să vină la Mine! Și să bea 38 cel ce crede în Mine! Așa cum zice Scriptura: «Din inima lui vor curge râuri de apă vie»“. Textul biblic la care Isus face referire este dificil de determinat. Vezi Is. 44:3; 55:1; 58:11; Zah. 14:8; Eze. 47:1-12.“ 39Spunea aceasta despre Duhul pe Care urmau să‑L primească cei ce cred în El. Căci Duhul nu fusese încă dat, pentru că Isus nu fusese încă proslăvit.
40Când au auzit aceste cuvinte, unii din mulțime ziceau: „Acesta este într-adevăr Profetul!“40 Vezi Deut. 18:15, 18. 41Alții ziceau: „Acesta este Cristosul!“, iar alții ziceau: „Nu, căci Cristosul nu vine din Galileea, nu‑i așa?! 42Nu spune Scriptura că din sămânța lui David42 Vezi Ps. 89:4. vine Cristosul, și din Betleem42 Vezi Mica 5:2., satul de unde era David?“ 43Și s‑a făcut astfel dezbinare în mulțime din cauza Lui. 44Unii dintre ei voiau să‑L aresteze, însă nimeni n‑a pus mâna pe El.
Necredința conducătorilor religioși
45Gărzile s‑au întors la conducătorii preoților și la farisei, iar aceștia le‑au întrebat:
– De ce nu L‑ați adus?
46Gărzile au răspuns:
– Niciodată n‑a vorbit vreun om astfel!
47Atunci fariseii le‑au răspuns:
– Nu cumva ați fost duși și voi în rătăcire?! 48A crezut în El vreunul dintre conducători sau dintre farisei?! 49Însă mulțimea aceasta care nu cunoaște Legea este blestemată!
50Nicodim, cel care venise la Isus mai înainte și care era unul dintre ei, le‑a zis:
51– Oare judecă Legea noastră un om înainte să‑l asculte și să știe ce face?
52Ei au răspuns și i‑au zis:
– Nu cumva ești și tu din Galileea? Cercetează și vei vedea că din Galileea nu se ridică vreun profet52 Un mss conține: Profetul (vezi Deut. 18:15). Fie varianta atestată de acest mss este cea originală, fie conducătorii religioși au fost atât de furioși încât au greșit în afirmația lor, deoarece profetul Iona era din Galileea, din Gat‑Hefer (vezi 2 Regi 14:25).!
53Apoi fiecare s‑a dus acasă.
