Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
1Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages6:7 Greek take two hundred denarii to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,6:19 Or about 5 or 6 kilometers they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’6:31 Exodus 16:4; Neh. 9:15; Psalm 78:24,25”
32Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’6:45 Isaiah 54:13 Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit6:63 Or are Spirit; or are spirit and life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
عيسی جمعيت پنج هزار نفری را سير میكند
1پس از اين رويداد، عيسی به آن سوس درياچهٔ جليل رفت (درياچهٔ جليل به درياچهٔ طبريه نيز معروف است)، 2-5و سيل جمعيت به طرف او سرازير شد! بيشتر ايشان زائران خانهٔ خدا بودند كه به شهر اورشليم میرفتند تا در مراسم عيد پِسَح شركت كنند. هر جا كه عيسی میرفت، ايشان نيز به دنبال او میرفتند تا ببينند چطور بيماران را شفا میبخشد. در آن حال، عيسی از تپهای بالا رفت و شاگردانش دور او نشستند؛ آنگاه مردم را ديد كه دستهدسته به دنبال او از تپه بالا میآيند. عيسی رو به فيليپ كرد و پرسيد: «فيليپ، ما از كجا میتوانيم نان بخريم و اين مردم را سير كنيم؟» 6عيسی اين سؤال را از او كرد تا ببيند عقيدهٔ او چيست، چون عيسی خود میدانست چه كند.
7فيليپ جواب داد: «خروارها نان لازم است تا بتوانيم اين جمعيت را سير كنيم.»
8-9يكی از شاگردان عيسی، «اندرياس» برادر شمعون پطرس، گفت: «پسر بچهای اينجاست كه پنج نان جو و دو ماهی دارد. ولی اين به چه درد اين جمعيت میخورد؟»
10عيسی فرمود: «بگوييد همه بنشينند.» پس تمام جمعيت روی سبزهها نشستند. فقط مردها در آن جمعيت، پنج هزار تن بودند.
11آنگاه عيسی نانها را گرفت، خدا را شكر كرد و داد تا بين مردم تقسيم كنند. با ماهيها نيز چنين كرد. مردم آنقدر خوردند تا سير شدند. 12سپس، عيسی به شاگردان فرمود: «تكههای باقيمانده را جمع كنيد تا چيزی تلف نشود.» 13از همان پس ماندهها دوازده سبد پر شد.
14وقتی مردم اين معجزهٔ بزرگ را ديدند گفتند: «حتماً اين همان پيامبری است كه ما چشم به راهش بودهايم.» 15وقتی عيسی ديد كه مردم میخواهند او را به زور ببرند و پادشاه كنند، از ايشان جدا شد و تنها بالای كوهی رفت.
عيسی روی آب راه میرود
16هنگام غروب، شاگردان عيسی به كنار درياچه رفتند و به انتظار او نشستند. 17ولی وقتی ديدند هوا تاريک شد و عيسی از كوه باز نگشت، سوار قايق شدند و به طرف كفرناحوم، كه در آن سوس درياچه بود، حركت كردند. 18-19در همان حال كه پارو میزدند و جلو میرفتند، باد شديدی وزيدن گرفت و درياچه طوفانی شد. هنوز از ساحل چندان دور نشده بودند كه ناگهان در ميان ظلمت و طوفان، عيسی را ديدند كه روی آب به طرف قايق پيش میآيد. همه وحشت كردند. 20ولی عيسی به ايشان فرمود: «من هستم، نترسيد!» 21وقتی خواستند او را سوار قايق كنند، متوجه شدند كه قايق به ساحل رسيده است.
عيسی، نان واقعی
22صبح روز بعد، آن طرف درياچه، مردم دوباره جمع شدند تا عيسی را ببينند، زيرا ديده بودند كه شاگردان عيسی با تنها قايقی كه آنجا بود آن محل را ترک گفته و عيسی را با خود نبرده بودند. 23چند قايق ديگر از «طبريه» به محلی كه خداوند نانها را بركت داد و مردم خوردند، رسيدند. 24وقتی مردم متوجه شدند كه نه عيسی و نه شاگردان در آنجا هستند، سوار قايق شده، خود را به كفرناحوم رساندند تا او را پيدا كنند.
25وقتی به آنجا رسيدند و عيسی را پيدا كردند، پرسيدند: «استاد، چطور به اينجا آمدی؟»
26عيسی جواب داد: «حقيقت اينست كه شما برای خوراک نزد من آمدهايد نه به سبب ايمان به من. 27اينقدر در فكر چيزهای زودگذر اين دنيا نباشيد، بلكه نيروی خود را در راه كسب زندگی جاويد صرف كنيد. اين زندگی جاويد را من به شما میبخشم، زيرا پدر من، خدا، مرا برای همين به اين جهان فرستاده است.»
28گفتند: «ما چه كنيم تا خدا از ما راضی باشد؟»
29عيسی فرمود: «خدا از شما میخواهد كه به من كه فرستادهٔ او هستم، ايمان آوريد.»
30-31گفتند: «اگر میخواهی ايمان بياوريم كه تو مسيح هستی بايد بيشتر از اينها به ما معجزه نشان دهی. هر روز به ما نان رايگان بده، همانطور كه موسی به اجداد ما به هنگام سفر در بيابان نان عطا میكرد. كتاب آسمانی نيز میگويد: موسی از آسمان به ايشان نان میداد.»
32عيسی فرمود: «قبول كنيد كه اين پدر من خدا بود كه به ايشان نان میداد، نه موسی. و اكنون نيز اوست كه میخواهد نان حقيقی را از آسمان به شما ببخشد. 33اين نان حقيقی را خدا از آسمان فرستاده است تا به مردم دنيا زندگی جاويد ببخشد.»
34گفتند: «آقا، از اين نان هر روز به ما بده.»
35عيسی جواب داد: «من نان حيات هستم. هر كه نزد من آيد، ديگر گرسنه نخواهد شد و كسانی كه به من ايمان آورند، هرگز تشنه نخواهند گرديد. 36ولی همانگونه كه قبلاً گفتم، شما با اينكه مرا ديدهايد، به من ايمان نياوردهايد. 37ولی بعضی نزد من خواهند آمد و ايشان كسانی هستند كه پدرم خدا به من داده است و ممكن نيست هرگز ايشان را از دست بدهم. 38چون من از آسمان آمدهام تا آنچه خدا میخواهد انجام دهم نه آنچه خودم میخواهم. 39و خدا از من میخواهد كه حتی يک نفر از كسانی را كه به من عطا كرده است از دست ندهم، بلكه ايشان را در روز قيامت به زندگی جاويد برسانم. 40چون خواست خدا اين است كه هر کس فرزند او را ديد و به او ايمان آورد، از همان وقت زندگی جاويد بيابد. من در روز قيامت چنين كسان را زنده خواهم كرد.»
41باز يهوديان لب به اعتراض گشودند، چون عيسی ادعا كرده بود نانی است كه از آسمان آمده است. 42پس گفتند: «مگر اين همان عيسی، پسر يوسف نيست؟ همهٔ ما پدر و مادرش را میشناسيم! حالا چطور شده كه ادعا میكند از آسمان آمده است؟»
43ولی عيسی جواب داد: «اينقدر اعتراض نكنيد. 44فقط كسی میتواند نزد من آيد كه پدرم خدا كه مرا فرستاده است او را به سوی من جذب كند، و من در روز قيامت او را زنده خواهم ساخت. 45همانطور كه در كتاب آسمانی نوشته شده است: همه از خدا تعليم خواهند يافت. پس كسانی كه صدای خدای پدر را بشنوند و راستی را از او بياموزند، به سوی من میآيند. 46البته منظورم اين نيست كه كسی خدا را ديده است، نه! چون فقط من كه از نزد او آمدهام، او را ديدهام.
47«اين حقيقت بزرگی است كه به شما میگويم كه هر كه به من ايمان آورد، از همان لحظه، زندگی جاويد دارد. 48من نان حيات هستم. 49پدران شما در بيابان آن نان را خوردند و عاقبت مردند. 50اما هر كه از اين نان آسمانی بخورد، تا به ابد زنده میماند. 51آن نان زنده كه از آسمان نازل شد، منم. هر كه از اين نان بخورد، تا ابد زنده میماند. اين نان در واقع همان بدن من است كه فدا میكنم تا مردم نجات يابند.»
52مردم با شنيدن اين سخن، باز اعتراض كرده، به يكديگر گفتند: «عجب حرفی میزند! چطور میخواهد بدنش را به ما بدهد تا بخوريم؟»
53پس عيسی باز فرمود: «اين كه میگويم عين حقيقت است: تا بدن مسيح را نخوريد و خون او را ننوشيد، هرگز نمیتوانيد زندگی جاويد داشته باشيد. 54ولی كسی كه بدنم را بخورد و خونم را بنوشد زندگی جاويد دارد، و من در روز قيامت او را زنده خواهم ساخت. 55چون بدنم خوراک واقعی و خونم نوشيدنی واقعی است. 56به همين دليل، هر كه بدنم را بخورد و خونم را بنوشد، در من خواهد ماند و من در او. 57من به قدرت پدرم خدا زندگی میكنم، همان كه مرا به اين دنيا فرستاد. شخصی نيز كه در من است، به قدرت من زندگی میكند. 58نان واقعی منم كه از آسمان آمدهام. نانی كه اجداد شما در بيابان خوردند، نتوانست ايشان را برای هميشه زنده نگه دارد. اما هر كه از اين نان بخورد، برای هميشه زنده خواهد ماند.» 59عيسی اين سخنان را در عبادتگاه كفرناحوم بيان كرد.
شاگردان بسياری عيسی را ترک میگویند
60درک اين پيغام چنان سخت بود كه حتی شاگردان عيسی نيز به يكديگر میگفتند: «خيلی مشكل است بفهميم چه میخواهد بگويد. چه كسی میتواند منظورش را درک كند؟»
61عيسی متوجه شد كه شاگردان او نيز لب به اعتراض گشودهاند؛ پس به ايشان فرمود: «سخنان من شما را ناراحت كرده است؟ 62پس اگر ببينيد كه من دوباره به آسمان باز میگردم، چه حالی به شما دست خواهد داد؟ 63فقط روح خدا به انسان زندگی جاويد میدهد. كسانی كه فقط يک بار متولد شدهاند، با آن تولد جسمانی، هرگز اين هديه را دريافت نخواهند كرد. ولی اكنون به شما گفتم كه چگونه اين زندگی روحانی و واقعی را میتوانيد به دست آوريد. 64با اين حال، بعضی از شما به من ايمان نخواهيد آورد.» چون عيسی از همان ابتدا میدانست چه كسانی به او ايمان خواهند آورد و چه كسی به او خيانت خواهد كرد.
65پس گفت: «به همين دليل گفتم فقط كسی میتواند نزد من بيايد كه پدرم خدا او را به سوی من جذب كند.»
66با شنيدن اين سخن، بسياری از پيروانش از او روی گرداندند و ديگر او را پيروی نكردند. 67آنگاه عيسی رو به آن دوازده شاگرد كرد و پرسيد: «شما نيز میخواهيد برويد؟»
68شمعون پطرس جواب داد: «استاد، نزد كه برويم؟ فقط شماييد كه با سخنانتان به انسان زندگی جاويد میدهيد. 69و ما ايمان آوردهايم و میدانيم كه شما فرزند مقدس خدا هستيد.»
70آنگاه عيسی فرمود: «من خودم شما دوازده نفر را انتخاب كردم؛ ولی يكی از شما بازيچه دست شيطان است.» 71عيسی درباره يهودا پسر شمعون اِسخريوطی سخن میگفت كه يكی از آن دوازده شاگرد بود و در آخر به عيسی خيانت كرد.
