Prologue
1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2He had seven sons and three daughters, 3and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
4His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6One day the angels1:6 Hebrew the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan1:6 Hebrew satan means adversary. also came with them. 7The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”
8Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”
9“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
12The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.1:21 Or will return there
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.”
22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
O carácter e a riqueza de Job
1Havia um homem chamado Job que vivia na terra de Uz; era uma pessoa reta que temia a Deus e se afastava do mal. 2Tinha sete filhos e três filhas. 3Era também muito rico; possuía 7000 ovelhas, 3000 camelos, 500 juntas de bois e 500 jumentas, tendo ao seu serviço um número considerável de pessoas. Era, sem dúvida, o homem mais rico entre todos os do Oriente.
4Os seus filhos costumavam juntar-se para comerem e beberem juntos na casa de cada um, à vez, convidando também as três irmãs. Nessas ocasiões comiam e bebiam abundantemente. 5Quando aquelas festanças acabavam, e por vezes prolongavam-se por vários dias, Job mandava chamar os filhos e santificava-os, levantando-se de manhã cedo e oferecendo um holocausto por cada um deles, porque Job pensava desta forma: “Talvez os meus filhos tenham pecado e tenham ofendido a Deus nos seus corações!” Essa era a razão por que fazia isso regularmente.
Job é sujeito à primeira prova
6Um dia, os anjos vieram apresentar-se perante o Senhor e Satanás veio com eles. 7“Donde vens?”, perguntou o Senhor a Satanás. Respondeu-lhe: “De passear pela Terra.”
8“Reparaste no meu servo Job e como não há na Terra ninguém semelhante a ele? É um homem reto que teme a Deus e se afasta do mal!”
9“Sim, mas não é para admirar; ele é assim porque tu o recompensas!”, respondeu Satanás. 10“Ele tem da tua parte proteção garantida para a sua casa e para os seus bens; fizeste-o prosperar em tudo o que faz, por isso, é tão rico! Não admira pois que te adore! 11Contudo, basta que lhe tires as riquezas e verás como te amaldiçoa na cara!”
12E o Senhor replicou-lhe: “Podes fazer o que quiseres com tudo o que lhe pertence, mas não lhe toques fisicamente.”
E Satanás retirou-se da presença do Senhor.
13Sucedeu que estando os filhos e as filhas de Job a comer e a beber vinho em casa do irmão mais velho, 14um mensageiro veio a correr à casa de Job com esta notícia: “Os teus bois estavam a lavrar e as jumentas a pastar ao lado. 15Chegaram os sabeus que caíram sobre os animais e mataram os guardadores; só eu escapei!”
16Ainda este não tinha acabado de falar quando se chegou outro: “Veio fogo do céu sobre as ovelhas e os pastores todos; só eu consegui escapar e vim logo trazer-te a notícia!”
17Mal este tinha acabado de falar, eis que um terceiro chega: “Apareceram três bandos de caldeus que deram sobre os camelos e mataram os teus criados; só eu escapei e consegui vir até aqui para te dar a notícia!”
18Imediatamente após este, apareceu ainda outro a dizer: “Teus filhos e filhas estavam a fazer uma festa na casa do mais velho. 19Subitamente, levantou-se um forte vento do deserto que fez ruir a casa sobre os que lá estavam, morrendo todos; só eu escapei!”
20Então Job levantou-se, rasgou a roupa que trazia e rapou o cabelo; ficou profundamente abatido e prostrou-se no chão na presença de Deus:
21“Saí nu do ventre de minha mãe
e nada levarei quando morrer.
Foi o Senhor que me deu tudo o possuía,
por isso, tinha o direito de tornar levar
aquilo que afinal lhe pertencia.
Que o Senhor seja louvado!”
22Em tudo isto Job não pecou nem atribuiu a Deus culpa alguma pelo sucedido.
