God and Idols
1Hear what the Lord says to you, people of Israel. 2This is what the Lord says:
“Do not learn the ways of the nations
or be terrified by signs in the heavens,
though the nations are terrified by them.
3For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
4They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.
5Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm
nor can they do any good.”
6No one is like you, Lord;
you are great,
and your name is mighty in power.
7Who should not fear you,
King of the nations?
This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
and in all their kingdoms,
there is no one like you.
8They are all senseless and foolish;
they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
9Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish
and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made
is then dressed in blue and purple—
all made by skilled workers.
10But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.
When he is angry, the earth trembles;
the nations cannot endure his wrath.
11“Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’ ”10:11 The text of this verse is in Aramaic.
12But God made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
13When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning with the rain
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
14Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;
they have no breath in them.
15They are worthless, the objects of mockery;
when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the Maker of all things,
including Israel, the people of his inheritance—
the Lord Almighty is his name.
Coming Destruction
17Gather up your belongings to leave the land,
you who live under siege.
18For this is what the Lord says:
“At this time I will hurl out
those who live in this land;
I will bring distress on them
so that they may be captured.”
19Woe to me because of my injury!
My wound is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
“This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”
20My tent is destroyed;
all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;
no one is left now to pitch my tent
or to set up my shelter.
21The shepherds are senseless
and do not inquire of the Lord;
so they do not prosper
and all their flock is scattered.
22Listen! The report is coming—
a great commotion from the land of the north!
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,
a haunt of jackals.
Jeremiah’s Prayer
23Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.
24Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,
or you will reduce me to nothing.
25Pour out your wrath on the nations
that do not acknowledge you,
on the peoples who do not call on your name.
For they have devoured Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and destroyed his homeland.

1พงศ์พันธุ์ของอิสราเอลเอ๋ย จงฟังสิ่งที่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสกับเจ้า 2องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสดังนี้ว่า
“อย่าเอาอย่างวิถีต่างๆ ของประชาชาติทั้งหลาย
และอย่าตกใจกลัวเนื่องด้วยหมายสำคัญต่างๆ ในท้องฟ้า
ดังที่ประชาชาติทั้งหลายหวาดกลัวอยู่นั้น
3เพราะธรรมเนียมของชนชาติต่างๆ นั้นไร้ค่า
เขาโค่นต้นไม้ต้นหนึ่งจากป่า
ให้ช่างฝีมือใช้สิ่วแกะสลักเป็นรูปทรง
4พวกเขาตกแต่งด้วยทองและเงิน
จากนั้นใช้ค้อนและตะปูตอกตรึงให้อยู่กับที่อย่างแน่นหนา
เพื่อมันจะไม่โอนเอน
5เทวรูปเหล่านั้นเหมือนหุ่นไล่กาในสวนแตง
มันพูดไม่ได้
ต้องอาศัยคนยกไป
เพราะมันเดินไม่ได้
อย่าไปกลัวเทพเจ้าเหล่านั้น
เพราะมันทำอะไรไม่ได้
ไม่ว่าทำประโยชน์หรือทำร้าย”
6ข้าแต่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ไม่มีผู้ใดเสมอเหมือนพระองค์
พระองค์ทรงยิ่งใหญ่
และพระนามของพระองค์เปี่ยมด้วยฤทธิ์อำนาจ
7ข้าแต่องค์กษัตริย์แห่งประชาชาติ
ใครเล่าจะไม่ยำเกรงพระองค์?
พระเกียรตินี้คู่ควรแด่พระองค์
ท่ามกลางนักปราชญ์ทั้งปวงของบรรดาประชาชาติ
และอาณาจักรทั้งปวงของพวกเขา
ไม่มีผู้ใดเสมอเหมือนพระองค์
8พวกเขาล้วนสิ้นคิดและโง่เขลา
พวกเขาถูกสอนโดยเทวรูปไม้อันไร้ค่า
9เขานำเงินซึ่งเคาะแล้วมาจากเมืองทารชิช
และทองคำมาจากเมืองอุฟาส
แล้วผลงานของช่างฝีมือ ช่างทอง
ก็ได้สวมอาภรณ์สีน้ำเงินและสีม่วง
รูปเคารพเหล่านี้ล้วนแต่เป็นผลงานของ
ช่างที่ชำนาญ
10แต่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงเป็นพระเจ้าเที่ยงแท้
พระองค์ทรงเป็นพระเจ้าผู้ทรงพระชนม์อยู่ เป็นองค์กษัตริย์ตลอดนิรันดร์กาล
เมื่อพระองค์ทรงพระพิโรธ โลกก็สะเทือนสะท้าน
ประชาชาติทั้งหลายไม่อาจทนต่อพระพิโรธของพระองค์ได้
11“จงบอกพวกเขาว่า ‘เทพเจ้าเหล่านี้ซึ่งไม่ได้เป็นผู้สร้างฟ้าสวรรค์และแผ่นดินโลกจะพินาศไปจากโลกและจากใต้ฟ้าสวรรค์’ ”10:11 พระคัมภีร์ข้อนี้เป็นภาษาอารเมค
12แต่พระเจ้าทรงสร้างโลกโดยฤทธานุภาพ
ทรงสถาปนาพิภพไว้ด้วยพระปรีชาญาณ
และทรงคลี่ฟ้าสวรรค์ออกด้วยความเข้าใจ
13เมื่อพระองค์ทรงเปล่งพระสุรเสียง ห้วงน้ำในฟ้าสวรรค์ก็ร้องคำราม
พระองค์ทรงให้เมฆลอยขึ้นจากสุดปลายแผ่นดินโลก
ทรงส่งฟ้าแลบให้มากับสายฝน
และทรงนำกระแสลมออกมาจากคลัง
14มนุษย์ทั้งปวงก็สิ้นคิดและขาดความรู้
ช่างทองทุกคนก็อับอายขายหน้าเพราะรูปเคารพของตน
เทวรูปของเขาเป็นสิ่งจอมปลอม
พวกมันไม่มีลมหายใจ
15มันเป็นของไร้ค่า เป็นสิ่งที่น่าเยาะเย้ย
เมื่อถึงเวลาพิพากษามันก็พินาศ
16แต่พระองค์ผู้มีกรรมสิทธิ์เหนือยาโคบไม่เหมือนเทวรูปเหล่านี้
เพราะพระองค์ทรงเป็นพระผู้สร้างสรรพสิ่ง
รวมทั้งเผ่าพันธุ์อิสราเอลที่เป็นกรรมสิทธิ์ของพระองค์
พระนามของพระองค์คือพระยาห์เวห์ผู้ทรงฤทธิ์
หายนะที่จะมาถึง
17ประชาชนที่ถูกล้อมเมืองไว้
จงเก็บข้าวของเพื่อเดินทางออกจากดินแดนนั้นเถิด
18เพราะองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสว่า
“บัดนี้เราจะเหวี่ยง
ผู้ที่อาศัยอยู่ในดินแดนนี้ออกไป
เราจะนำความทุกข์ลำเค็ญมายังพวกเขา
เพื่อพวกเขาจะรับรู้ถึงความโกรธของเรา”
19วิบัติแก่ข้าพเจ้าเนื่องด้วยการบาดเจ็บนี้!
บาดแผลของข้าพเจ้าเยียวยาไม่ได้!
ถึงกระนั้นข้าพเจ้าก็บอกตัวเองว่า
“นี่เป็นความเจ็บป่วยของเราเอง และเราก็ต้องทน”
20เต็นท์ของข้าพเจ้าถูกทำลายสิ้น
เชือกขึงทั้งหมดก็ขาดผึง
ลูกๆ ไปจากข้าพเจ้าหมด
ไม่เหลือใครอยู่ช่วยกางเต็นท์
หรือสร้างที่พักพิงให้ข้าพเจ้า
21คนเลี้ยงแกะก็สิ้นคิด
และไม่ได้ทูลถามองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
ดังนั้นเขาจึงไม่เจริญ
และฝูงแกะของเขาก็กระจัดกระจายไปหมด
22ฟังเถิด! มีรายงานข่าวมาว่า
เสียงอึกทึกกึกก้องดังมาจากแผ่นดินทางเหนือ
เขาจะทำให้หัวเมืองต่างๆ ของยูดาห์ถูกทิ้งร้าง
เป็นถิ่นของหมาใน
คำอธิษฐานของเยเรมีย์
23ข้าแต่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ข้าพระองค์ตระหนักว่ามนุษย์ไม่ได้เป็นเจ้าของชีวิตตัวเอง
ไม่ได้เป็นผู้บงการย่างก้าวของตน
24ข้าแต่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ขอทรงตีสอนข้าพระองค์เถิด แต่ขอทรงโปรดให้ความเป็นธรรม
อย่าทรงทำด้วยพระพิโรธ
มิฉะนั้นข้าพระองค์จะพินาศไป
25ขอทรงระบายพระพิโรธลงเหนือบรรดาประชาชาติ
ที่ไม่ยอมรับพระองค์
และเหนือชนชาติทั้งหลายที่ไม่ยอมออกพระนามของพระองค์
เพราะพวกเขากลืนกินยาโคบ
พวกเขากลืนกินจนหมดสิ้น
และทำลายล้างถิ่นฐานของยาโคบย่อยยับไปหมด
