Favoritism Forbidden
1My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”2:8 Lev. 19:18 you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”2:11 Exodus 20:14; Deut. 5:18 also said, “You shall not murder.”2:11 Exodus 20:13; Deut. 5:17 If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith and Deeds
14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless2:20 Some early manuscripts dead? 21Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”2:23 Gen. 15:6 and he was called God’s friend. 24You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

1愛する皆さん。人をえこひいきし、相手が金持ちか貧しいかによって態度を変えていながら、どうして臆面もなく、「私は主イエス・キリストを信じています」などと言えるでしょう。 2たとえば教会に、金の指輪をはめたりっぱな身なりの金持ちと、みすぼらしい身なりの貧しい人が入って来たとします。 3その時、金持ちには気を遣い、「こちらの良い席へどうぞ」と言って案内し、貧しい人には、「そこで立っているか、床にでも座っていなさい」と言ったとしたら、どうでしょう。 4そのような態度は、クリスチャンとしての信仰を根本から疑わせるもので、悪い考えで人を差別し、さばいている証拠です。
5皆さん、よく聞いてください。神は貧しい人を選んで、豊かな信仰を持つ者としてくださいました。神の国は、そういう人のものです。神の国は、神を愛する者に約束されたものだからです。 6それなのに、あなたがたは貧しい人を軽蔑したのです。あなたがたをひどい目に会わせ、裁判所に訴えるのは、裕福な人たちではありませんか。 7また、あなたがたが仕えるイエス・キリストの尊い御名をあざ笑うのも、彼らではありませんか。 8あなたがたがほんとうに、「あなたの隣人をあなた自身のように愛しなさい」（レビ19・18）という最高の律法を守っているならりっぱなことです。 9しかし、もし人をえこひいきしているなら、あなたがたは罪を犯していることになります。 10律法全体を注意深く守っていても、一点ででもつまずけば、その人はすべてを破った者となるのです。 11なぜなら、「他人の妻と通じてはならない」（出エジプト20・14）と言われた神は、「殺してはならない」（出エジプト20・13）とも求められるのです。ですから、性的な罪を犯さなくても、だれかを殺せば律法の違反者になります。そして、罪ある者として神の前に立たせられます。
12あなたがたは、キリストの命令を守る者にふさわしく語り、行動しなさい。 13思いやりのない人には、思いやりのないさばきが下ります。しかし、あわれみ深い人には、神のあわれみがあるのです。
本物の信仰は行いを伴う
14愛する皆さん。自分には信仰があると言っても、それを行動で表さなかったら、どうしてその信仰を実証できるでしょう。そのような信仰が、人を救うことができるでしょうか。 15あなたがたの仲間に、着る物もなく、その日の食べ物にも事欠いている人がいて、 16その人に、「それはお困りですね。でも神様が祝福してくださいますよ。暖かくして、お腹いっぱい食べてください」と言うだけで、必要なものを何もあげないなら、何の役に立つでしょう。 17このように、信仰に行いが伴わなければ、その信仰は死んだも同然です。
18さらに、こう言う人もいるかもしれません。「行いのないあなたの信仰の正しさを見せてください。私は、私の行いによって、自分の信仰を見せましょう。」 19あなたは、神はただひとりだと信じています。それはりっぱなことです。しかし、悪魔もそう信じて、神を恐れているのです。
20ああ、あなたは、なんと愚かであわれな人でしょう。みことばを実行しなければ、信じることなどむなしいことを、いつになったら悟るのですか。行いを伴って初めて本物と言えるのです。 21先祖アブラハムでさえ、その行いによって神の前に正しい者と認められたではありませんか。彼は、息子イサクを供え物として祭壇にささげよと神に命令された時、いさぎよく従いました。 22アブラハムは心から神を信じていたので、どんなおことばにも喜んで従ったのです。こうしてアブラハムの信仰は、実際の行動によって完全なものと認められました。 23ですから、「アブラハムは神を信じた。それで神の目に正しい者と認められた」（創世15・6）という聖書のことばどおり、彼は、「神の友」と呼ばれるまでになったのです。 24人は信仰だけでなく、行いによって神に正しいと認められることがわかるでしょう。 25売春婦ラハブも同様です。彼女はイスラエルの使者たちをかくまい、別の道から安全に逃がしてやりました（ヨシュア2章）。この行為によって、彼女は神に認められたのです。 26たましいのない体が死んだものであるように、行いのない信仰は死んだも同然です。
